Think Pollard stays on as 2?

But can he take the ego hit of a reduced contract?

It looks to me like he has had no problems adjusting to the sharing of duties with Pollard. Also, didnt Tank take a reduced deal to stay hear this year? Ego has nothing to do with this, and Zeke has not shown himself to be an ego driven person.

As one Michael Corleone once said, this is noting personal, just business.

We have to make the not too difficult decision of moving on from Prescott's life partner in order to keep Pollard. Even a reworked contract would be too much salary to carry at the RB position.

This demonstrates a glaring lack of understanding of how NFL contracts and the salary cap works. There is no more guaranteed money in Zeke's contract so if he is cut he does not receive a dime from the Cowboys. The 12 million to which you refer is the cap charge the Cowboys would have against them if they cut him. Zeke's base salary next year is 10.9 million not 16.7 million. So if they can negotiate his salary down to something palatable but there is nothing they can do about the pro-rated bonus money. That 5.8 million goes against their cap no matter what they do. So they can absorb a 12 million dollar cap hit to release him or negotiate a deal that counts maybe 7-8 million against the cap to keep him. Only people who hate Zeke would rather owe 12 million against the cap to be rid of him. Which of course any Eagle fan would certainly qualify. This is like when Eagles fans were hoping like hell the Cowboys wouldn't re-sign Dak and coming up with all kinds of cockamamie reason why they shouldn't. It hasn't really worked out all that well for the Eagles when facing the Cowboys with Dak in the line up so I totally get it.

makes ZERO sense to not redo a deal that works for both Zeke and Dallas.

I don’t think he stays anymore than Alvin Harper would have.

No position is more 2nd contract dependent than RB.

Pollard has a lot of light shining on him with more likely to come. And the RB role has increased in the NFL, his shot at the brass ring and he deserves that.

They would have to flip the order to keep Pollard and I do not see the GM doing that so it is back to the draft for a RB.
What should happen and what will happen could be 2 different things.
They should redo or cut Zeke and pay whatever it takes to keep Pollard a Cowboy.
What might happen is , Jerry digs his heals in, doubles down on Zeke and lets Pollard walk.
This is an area where not having as Professional GM could really hurt us.
We shall see....

It really isn’t that complicated. If Dallas wants to keep Pollard, there are numerous ways to keep him.

Don’t sweat it.

I can fully see how a HC/GM combo under pressure to win now but doesn’t have the top end QB would want to try to add Pollard and use him in a Deebo type role.

Dallas will likely need to tag him to keep him, and that means 20m plus at RB if Elliott isn’t cut.

Elliott is going to need to be flexible moving ahead or this duo is playing their final games together.

Thanks for the clarification. In that case I guess it comes down to zeke's market value if he stays or not. Not sure why u think eagles phans hate zeke? I don't remember any cockamamie reasons why the cowboys shouldn't sign dak. I do remember that if they would of paid him sooner he would of cost a lot less. It may not have worked out so well for the eagles with dak in the line-up so far, but it hasn't worked out so well for the cowboys with dak in the playoffs. Is that fair to say?

The key there being "so far." Dak was saddled with Jason Garrett as his head coach his first two playoff trips and was undone by injuries to himself and some key teammates last year. Hopefully this year will be different. Since you're new here I will excuse your not remembering all the Eagle fans posting here about how "Dak sucks" and the "Cowboys would be stupid to re-sign him" posts from a few years ago. Dak and this Cowboys group are set up to have a nice 4-5 year run where they are firm annual playoff contenders and probably Super Bowl contenders. I think his playoff record is about to get a nice bump over the next several seasons.

As for Zeke? I really read him to be a true team guy at this point in his career. Now if the Cowboys waive him and let him wander over to some place like KC or Buffalo he'd be an idiot not to jump at the chance to play with those teams. But he's already taken home like 60 million dollars in his career. I don't think he needs any more money. Once you secure your bag it becomes about happiness and fulfillment. And for a guy like him winning gives you more happiness and fulfillment than a few extra ducats. He might be able to get some bottom feeder team to bring him in at an inflated salary to sell tickets but I can't see him taking big money to go somewhere and lose 10-12 games a year when he could take reasonable money to stay in Dallas and win 10-12 games a year. Or do the same with another contending team.

I can see the Cowboys tagging Pollard next year. What happens with Zeke will say a lot about this org’s intentions. Zeke either needs to be released (my preference) or on a much cheaper deal. Gonna be interesting.

Restructuring is just pushing more money into the future, sacrificing future salary cap space. How do you not see that?

Something I am not a fan of. Especially with RB's, which is a fungible position
That's certainly one way to restructure a deal but that's not all ways of restructuring a deal. They'll find another way.

Im thinking Zeke loves being in Dallas. Him and Dak are great friends. Dont think those things wont way on him. He also cant help but see where the team is. Leaving Dallas and the spotloight to go to the ????????? cant be very appealing.
Let Dak take a cut to keep Zeke.

I think zeke and pollard are both the running backs next year. With pollard getting a long term deal and a pay raise and zeke getting more security in terms of years while getting a pay cut

I'm sure he will sign with another team. Hard to see dallas paying him at least 8 mil a year.

My prediction is Zeke takes a pay cut and Pollard comes back on the franchise tag.

Then in 2024 there will be a big decision based on how those two guys perform a year from now.

As a 2? I can see the Cowboys keeping both Zeke and Pollard. But if they keep Zeke and let Pollard walk, that can only be the result of a full bottle of Johnny Walker Blue on an empty stomach.

Way too early to speculate about anything with Pollard next season. The Cowboys could decide to keep him over Zeke, maybe Zeke takes a paycut, maybe Pollard doesn't command as much as some think. We do know that most teams end up regretting paying RBs so that has to impact the value at some point.

For now just be grateful for what we have, hope for a deep playoff run, and enjoy the ride!

  • I think they will:
    • Franchise Pollard
    • Cut Zeke
    • Draft a RB

If Pollard leaves he’ll end up splitting carries with someone else. I don’t think he’ll have the same success with another team that he’s had with the Cowboys. DeMarco Murray wasn’t as good once he left Dallas.
