Folks, so many Cowboys fans just don't realize how good the 1971 Doomsday Defense really was.
The last 9 games, 6 regular season and 3 post season, the Cowboys only gave up 8 touchdowns. FOUR of those touchdowns were garbage touchdowns.
The Cowboys had 4 Hall of Famers in that starting defense. Three of them in the Secondary:
Mel Renfro
Herb Adderley
Cliff Harris
and Bob Lilly on the line.
I truly believe the secondary of Renfro, Adderley, Harris, and Cornell Green is the greatest secondary of all time - definitely the greatest in Cowboys history. Charlie Waters was a rookie bench warmer.
Just think, it was the non Hall of Famer Cornell Green who covered Paul Warfield everywhere in Super Bowl VI.
The 1971 Cowboys never get the credit they deserve. That team was every bit as good as 1977 and 1992/1993.
The secondary the Cowboys have today especially with their depth can rival this unit.
