Emmitt was a beast. It shows you have to have right mix of the o line and a rb to make it work. Dallas has a run game teams do not see much anymore. DEADLY Combo.

How many of those RB's have three 23 year old cornerstones on the offensive line blocking for them? Don't be cheap, if Murray performs then you pay him.
This. Plus he knows the zone blocking scheme, knows where the holes will open up at, and is outstanding in pass protection. 3 years, $10M should be enough to retain him.

Yes, for people saying that it's only the OLine and that any RB could replace Murray, they need to review the success of Emmitt's backups and what they didn't do behind the great OLine(s) of the early nineties.

They were backups for a reason.

As my grandpappy used to say: "If you want to race in the Cantucky Derby you better git a thoroughbred." Dallas will need to draft a quality running back if they choose not to re-sign Murray to a fair ($5- mil/year) contract.

People also like to say there are quality RBs throughout the draft.... There are also a lot of busts that are waiting to be selected :). Use those picks for defense.

There are quality running backs throughout the draft. A great scouting department should be able to identify those possible candidates that not only have produced in a proven arena (tough conference) but also fit their team's running game scheme/philosophy.

if you look at our upcoming free agents then it's obvious you can't sign them all. so you have to decide who you have a repacement for on the roster or who is easiest to replace. i don't buy that any rb could get those yeards behind this line. murray is very good after contact. but rb is a position where production drops of very rapidly at a point in their career.i actually think harris is gone and murray is gone after this year. harris is gonna get starter type money and we won't be able to pay him that and keep dez and williams. can't have 3 high paid wr's. i think someone will offer murray stupid money and to me anything over 3.5 per year i let him walk. it's just that you have to make decisions and you have to look at years down the road when you make those decisions because thses are'nt one year deals. a 3 year deal means the highest part of hissalry would be when your oline is coming up for new contracts too. i love murray and think he is a very good back but you can't keep everyone and to me rb is the easiest position to replace

Its mostly the line, by far.

Yeah. That's why the lineman credit Murray for his innate ability for setting up blocks.

It's not 'by far' via any stretch of the imagination.

Murray gets 4 when there's only 2, consistently.

I'm not taking anything away from this line.........they're top three right now.

So is Murray.

There are too many other factors to consider in lists like this.

This is merely a snapshot of a player's contract in a given year.

You go back and look at previous seasons and it's similar...

The performance of running backs from season to season is far more difficult to predict than just about any other position.

I know just from participating in fantasy football that the guys going in the first couple rounds are a real crapshoot as far as how they're going to perform.

Never seen a fan base so eager to get rid of the top back in the NFL, as BP said you are what your record says you are and right now Murray is playing head and shoulders above all others. Closest RB to him is over 150 behind him in yardage. Myself I just want to enjoy seeing him out there helping this team win ball games and when the season is done I'm sure the Cowboys and Murray will sit down and try to work out a deal.

You certainly see running backs missing time and having issues after they get paid.

Sometimes that is the case I think you can find that with any position. RB since they get caught up in piles with big guys rolling up the back of their legs injuries can and do happen. However like any position when you have a young and talented player you do what you can to get them signed. I'm glad Dallas never took that approach with guys like Tony Dorsett or Emmitt Smith, they got paid well because they played great ball and were big parts of those teams. Dallas is finally doing what many of us have been hollering about and some think you can just throw some RB in there and all is well? Not buying it

I also question trying to correlate a potential situation with Murray/Dallas with the Emmitt situation in 1993 when he held out the first two games.

-Two games is a pretty small sample size.
-One of the teams that beat Dallas in those two games was beaten by the Cowboys in the previous SB so there was some incentive to "even the score".
-The other loss was to the Commanders who won the SB just two seasons earlier, so they weren't exactly "chopped liver".
-Emmitt's teammates (judging by their comments, which I've looked up) certainly weren't in Derrick Lassic's "corner" when it came to making due... Did that affect their performance blocking for Lassic?
-IF Murray did leave as a free agent, it doesn't mean a "Derrick Lassic" quality back would be brought in to replace him.

Sound strategy that I agree with.

We should all let this season play out before talking about paying or not paying Murray.

Ride him like the rented mule he is this year, let him test the market unprotected next year. RBs are a dime a dozen.
