This team seems to hate WRs with 4.4 or better speed

T williams, m Gallup, c lamb. All 4.51s. Or 4.52. Cooper was a 4.4. But they didn’t send him deep a lot. Tolbert runs4.49 he’s in the bench. Simi runs 4.4 he so on the bench. Turpin looks 4.3 ish. He doesn’t see the field in offense
do you want the WRs know how to play the position? or you just are advocating for speed? because speed doesn't equal to being a good WR. if all they can do is run deep, then as soon as they are on the field I know they are going deep. if they can't run routes, as soon as they start their route, I can tell if they are not going deep and easily take them out of play. Jerry Rice the best WR ever had a 4.55 speed I believe, because he knew how to run routes and how to get open.

otherwise, they should just reach into the track team and grab a 4.3 guy. problem solved. that's not how it works

fehoko is not a WR ready to play. just because he has speed doesn't mean he is going to be successful automatically. Otherwise all 4.3 guys would just plainly dominate the NFL.

Turpin, can't play WR. he is small. both in height and weight. and he went undrafted by 32 teams. 7 rounds. and only team interested in him was cowboys as a returner.

4.3 guys don’t just grow on trees….and the ones that do show up aren’t very good. I’d love Tyreke Hill but there’s only one.
its not about 4.3 guys. its about 4.3 guys that can run routes, other than a go route. getting separation is not about deep speed. most people like OP don't understand the intricacies of being an NFL WR. the thing about Cooper wasn't his speed, he was a technician on how he set up the DBs. foot work, weight shift, reading the DB on the fly and making the moves to get open.

He may be but he has little experience, I find it interesting that men who have done this for years do not know what is going on yet a message board poster does? How much of this offense does Turpin grasp? He has 3 catches in pre season for 20 yard, he made the team because of his talent on special teams. These coaches see him day in and day out they know what he can do and what he understand to this point. He has seen spot duty on offense 25 snaps to this point after 6 games
Yep and I'll still be a message board poster long after those 2 have been fired.
Which maybe sooner than later.
Jerry and Stephen are "football people " too. RIGHT?

No coach is immune from getting fired. As a message board poster you can't be fired, you can have an opinion and if it is wrong you can't be fired because of it.

No but a coach can be fired and return as a better coach, or a bad coach which is the case with McCarthy. when he lost the ability for his GB offensive line to hold at will, he immediately became a horrible coach. He sold Jerry his analytics speech , and of course it was all the rage and Jerry jumped in hook line and sinker. Mike McCarthy brought in Nolan and philbin (again) as coaches who in my opinion should both be out of the NFL.
Kellen Moore is supposed to be the boy genius but has never coached in his life and the league seems to have him figured out.

so yeah I might lean towards my opinion over players abilities and development a little more than these characters .
But I'm just a message board guy.

that is your view on McCarthy sorry I don't share it. Nolan I agree with but Philbin I have less of an issue and think he has put together a pretty decent OL. The work he has done with Steele and Tyler Smith I think it is great and even McGovern who has been playing pretty decent ball of his own.
Moore has been working with a backup QB and we sit at 4-1 over the course of playing a back up, excuse me it I'm not up in arms over it.

Give me a guy that can take the top off of the defense, and it opens up a couple of yards to operate over the middle, opening up opportunities for other guys to make plays in space.

I think it's a mistake to take the combine times as gospel. A lot of guys go to some speed training bootcamp and train like they're trying to make the Olympic team for 3 months leading up to the combine.. and then get drafted too high based on their combine time, make a ton of money and never train that way again. Cooper Kupp was never a burner so he probably didn't go to any pre-Olympic bootcamp so his time was probably more indicative of his real football speed as compared to guys who go train like a sprinter to run 4.45 but really are basically just 4.6 guys the rest of their careers.

Combine time is electronic, so it doesn't have the human error element of hand held times. Still, sure a runner may not run his best possible time at the combine, and some do a better job training for the combine, but that is probably the difference of a few hundredths of a second, not a few 10ths of a second.

Regardless, the point remains that top end speed, while an asset, is not required to be an outstanding receiver.

Speed is obviously a major asset for a WR. But it’s at most 20% of the formula for greatness. I would rank speed behind these qualities in a receiver:
  • Ability to get open/great route runner.
  • Reliably good hands.
  • Ability to adjust routes against certain coverages.
  • Ability to block downfield.
  • Speed

I thought you said they hate WR's with 4.4 speed and you just listed 3 of them.

I've always been a proponent of this.. I also think they need to time them from a flying start.. because at no time will a player ever run 40 yards from a starting block stance. The timings should be position specific. RBs should be timed from the I-back stance, receivers from their standard 2 point stance, DBs should have to back peddle 5 yards then run, linemen from their 3 point stance and so on. And again, all in pads.. Time them simulating football, not the damn underwear Olympics.

Love the idea! Maybe the Cowboys can be innovators and do this for workouts and official visits if possible.

right, you just described Tyreek Hill, how many are there in the NFL with all of those and the SPEED, not many...

Yeah this was my point when I cited that the combine is not necessarily an accurate gauge of the player you're getting. Different guys have different approaches to it. A guy like Turpin didn't even get invited. Then others don't have access to an agent who will foot the bill for the "combine boot camps" the big time guys go to now. So an unknown guy from a small school who has to train by himself might be as fast or faster than the big school guys but can't show it at the combine.. And proper training and technique CAN shave off a few tenths of a second.. and each tenth of a second is roughly one yard at top speed. So a 4.3 guy will be 2 yards ahead of a 4.5 guy after 40 yards and 3 yards ahead of the 4.6 guy. THREE YARDS!! If that's the distance between a DB and the guy he's covering that's a high steppin, hand behind the helmet Deion style touchdown.

I know guys who ran 4.5 and 4.6 in high school who became 4.3 and 4.4 guys in college. Better coaching, training, nutrition and technique gained them 2 yards over their high school selves. The speed in and of itself didn't make them any better football players.. It just got them drafted higher..

But you can be banned.

That's kinda like getting fired, but worse.

Gotta have a QB that can get them the football....and Dak can barely throw 45 yards. He's damaged goods...can't throw off that bum ankle. The book is out on him.
Dak throws behind 4.5 guys......he couldn't lead a 4.3 enough
