Pre-season games in general and the first one in particular don't mean a whole lot. This one was no exception. Good players can look like they won't be worth much, average players can look like Pro Bowlers. It's more about how the players react, how they know the formations, blocking and tackling techniques, and so forth.
Exactly........total evaluation

Every team is looking for a quality OL depth, tho k best way is to make a trade as it will be hard to claim one thru the waiver wire after the cuts
And who could we trade that is going to bring a starting level OL? Gallup? Fowler? Armstrong? Gallimore? Kearse? Turpin?

Gallup trade - saves 2.4m on cap, with 4.4m in dead money
Fowler - saves 2m, 1m dead cap
Armstrong - saves 5.75m, 1.5m dead
Kearse - saves 4.4m, 1.75m dead
Gallimore - saves 2.75m, .25m dead
Turpin - saves 870k, $0 dead

So from that group, Armstrong, Gallimore or Kearse would be the best bet. I doubt Gallimore would get us much...so Armstrong or Kearse.

Mazi Smith logged just one tackle for the game, and the Jags rushed for 145 yards against us so how was he "good against the run"?

People are already making excuses for this guy who did not impress at all in his first outing. We got people saying, "don't expect Warren Sapp", but his draft spot and hype certainly warranted more noise than what he made yesterday.

Watching it now, in the 2nd qtr. I haven’t really seen Deuce yet but I like what I see from Overshown so far.

Think of the numbers that they cannot keep everyone: DL/CB. Usually trades happen between teams who have numbers at a particular position.

Lamb, Gallup, Cooks, and Tolbert..........could be the strongest unit on the team.
I would also add in Turpin as a receiver, many who have been at camp think he may even be the team's #4 WR ahead of Tolbert. No matter how they fall on the depth chart, this unit is in far better shape then it was last season when Noah Brown was pretty much the only receiver behind Lamb to do anything.

My bigger worry is replacing Shultz production, Ferguson looked good last night and also heard Pollard say that MM likes to use the backs more in the passing game then under Moore. Both areas should replace lost production.

Now the biggest worry has to be getting Zach Martin back and upgrading the depth behind the starters.

The totals of the fines Martin is facing means he has his mind made up. He will not play again unless he has a new contract.
He isn't limping back to the team the week before the season and say "Hey guys I was just kidding about the contract."
Dallas must pay him, cut him or trade him.
They could just do nothing and he would sit under contract getting older and not get paid at all... thats an option.
think of how great that worked out for LaVeon Bell........

Liked what i saw on Overshown and Vaughn....the two i really believe can make the step into the NFL this year. Bass looked great out there for his first time. Better than some of the 2nd team guys. He may also make an impact if someone goes down.

Those who still think Vaughn is a gadget type player or a feel good story only should have seen for themselves he is the real deal and are just talking out of the wrong end. He looked like the best back out there on the field. I can see MM using him out in space to get him the ball but PS is not the time to show everything. He is a combination of Sproles and BSanders.

The good:
Vaughn looks like our best rookie.
Asim Richards did a decent job switch from T to IOL.
Tolbert looked comfortable and vastly improved from last year.
Overshown and Clark are FAST and play with aggression.
We're deep at TE

The Bad:
Grier and Rush have to improve.
Fumbles.
CB' were either too handsy or in good position but not getting their head turned around.
Pass rush was never good enough.
O line looked slow and Un-athletic. Josh Ball didn't look good at all.

The ugly:
Gallimore and Bohannon looked like practice squad jags. If they weren't tripping over their own feet, they were being tossed around and thrown to the ground like yesterday's trash by guys who will be selling cars in a couple months. Just pitiful. We really need Mazi to figure it out quickly.

1. A lot of players were on the field... and for significant chunks of the game... who I'd never heard of, and I'm more than a casual observer. Perhaps that partially explains some of the confusion--players who we're expecting to compete for the 53 man having to play so much with players who, in reality, are competing for just a PS slot.

2. Got burned multiple times, some of them for scores, by lack of containment on the edge on defense. Fixable.

3. Josh Ball is a road grater when asked to run block. Pass blocking is solid when one-on-one, but he got caught not knowing how best to dance with his OT mate on that stunt that resulted in a sack.

Reminds me of "90 '91 with a ton of young talent ready to make their mark. Drafting has improved in the past 5 seasons.

Bull crap to the Jaguars, it's one thing to play your 1s it's another to blitz them in game 1.

Early for evaluations, coaches are looking for certain things not necessarily winning the play.

To improve the blocking. To make Dak better he needs better blocking. To improve the run game and allow the RB's to get wider.
Yup. WCO offense relies on TE’s a lot more as pass blockers. They discussed the is in pregame.

My Takeaways:

+ The RBs (4Deuce n Rico) are explosive runners and receiving threats. Still want to see RoJo. Still need to see more Hunter.
- Malik Davis looked slow, missed pass blocks, and his vision didn't seems all there.

+TEs are impressive! Ferg is a TE1. Schoon needs more time, but the 12 package should be really good.
- Stephens probably won't make the 53, so we'll have to see if he gets to the PS.

+WRs are loaded imo. Turp n Tolbert are WR4 n WR5. Houston looks like a legit NFL WR just a solid player. Simi is a big WR and looked good in the game, a hard guy to cut.
- Jalen Brooks looked like a 7th round pick, and the anointing oils should be put away, but it wasn't all his fault he didn't make plays.

+ The 2nd team OL played against Starters, and they should improve moving forward.
- The Cowboys may have to sign a guy off the streets with warts.

+ The DL was fine, I liked how they clogged the middle up at DT. DEs played well, the rookie Land was impressive.
- Pass rush went cold at times and they didn't get the QB down when they had him.

+ The LBs are fast and explosive! Clark n Overshown are the future, and could be good starters this season. Harper is and has been a baller to me. Cox is healthy.
- Jefferson got hurt, but the LBs are already set.

+ The CBs struggled, but Daron Bland played well on the outside..I'm happy about him. Mukuamu seems to be a CB now, so TEs n Big Slots will have issues with him.
- Wright, Goodwin and Joseph are in a numbers crunch, and two of them might not make it. Scott Jr. looked like a PS guy.

+ The Safety position is loaded of course, J. Thomas showed his ball skills (he's a KR'er also), but needs to clean up his run fits to make the team. Bell looked good in the box. Redwine n Coyle didn't make mistakes.
- The Cowboys may have to cut a good player here.

+ The Kicker Aubrey has a strong leg, and I'm interested to see more from him.

as expected, the 2's and 3's on OL struggled. that and the kicker were really the only concerns.

but better than usual. there are usually more concerns than that, such as additional position group struggles, lots of injuries and penalties, etc.

good showing in general.

I’m not sure why they went out and got Schoonmaker. Fergs is fully capable of being the #1 TE. The kid is pretty darn good and feisty.

Totally agree about the LB’s. They looked really good. Clark looked night and day from last season. Love this!

As usual the Oline is scary.

Vaughan will be playing a lot. He’s too explosive to not get him on the field. His size is actually a gift. Most defenders hate going that low to tackle.

They have to bring in Gould at kicker. He’s the most consistent one out there currently.
This team is Playing with fire at kicker

It's a real head scratcher why they are fooling around with such an important position?
