Yes, it is. And for the most part, debate/discussion is what's going on. Since the OP threw the thread out there, he was obviously looking for debate/discussion regarding his thread. He should expect some/many to disagree with him given the subject of his thread since he's on a Cowboys discussion board where Cowboys fans tend to participate. I'd say if you can't take the heat, then don't start the fire!

Yeah but it is mostly people gang up on people who dissent instead of having a rational debate, their opinion is just dismissed and the user is ridiculed. I think that is pretty unacceptable but that's just me. I like a spirited debate but I guess personally attacking a poster is common (as long as the majority agrees of course)..

I would take a number of current starting QBs over Romo but it is what it is. Romo is ours, he's paid for years, and the success or failure of this team rests on his shoulders. I'm very hopeful that he will take this team to the next level but history has proven otherwise. He is the classic tease. Yet still, he is our guy. That said, although I may no longer be a blind homer, I will continue to hope the current nucleus gets it and changes the course of season ending fizzles for good. The December/January vacations have got to stop...

Since everyone wanted to jump in and bash me on the game thread I figured I might as well start an actual thread to give the zone another chance to do the same, or perhaps a chance to see what I was saying.

I'll be the first to tell you Romo had a great game today. He is the best QB here since Aikman.

I do not believe that Romo has it in him to take this team to a super bowl.

I do believe that Romo will have GREAT games, make Great plays, win lots of games and take us to he playoffs.

The only problem is I see Romo making the same mistakes over and over again and at critical times during the game. Turning the ball over in the redzone, throwing deep ball picks (hey they are as good as a punt right?), throwing the ball into triple coverage...those types of things. He made some of those same mistakes in today's game early in the first half. Which is what led to my original statement. It just does not seem to me that he has been able to take some of these mistakes out of his game.

I know all QBs are going to make these types of mistakes, but Romo seems to make them at critical times (ie. the big December Games and the playoffs). Most of the QBs who take their team to a Super Bowl don't do this.

Now...could Romo take the Patriots to a Super Bowl, probably. Are there many QBs who could take this team to a Super Bowl, probably not. But in order for this team to go to a super bowl Romo needs to take out these mistakes and step it up one more level (the top level of QBs, I would say only P Manning, Brady, and maybe one or two more are better). This team is not solid enough for Romo to be making those types of mistakes and get into a super bowl.

Sure Romo is going to have games like today, and I loved his game today, fun to watch, games like he had against TB on thanksgiving a few years back, but he is also going to have games like he did against Philly last year, against NY two years ago, games like Buffalo 2007, Games like Cinci last year....

To me (and I am not the first to make this comparison so I don't know why today I get bashed for saying it) Romo is Danny White, he will have great stats, he will have great games, he will set records, he just does not have quiet what it takes to get THIS team to a Superbowl. A lot of you are right though, there are no better options, because 1) he is pretty dang good most of the time and 2) better QBs are rare and hard to find. So IMO, we stick with him and just hope that we can improve the team around him.

So, I hope I am wrong. I am not a troll, I have no agenda, I don't think I am overly pessimistic on most things (though maybe I am). I have been a Cowboys fan since I was born. I have not missed a Cowboys game in years. I look foward to the game all week, and I always hope for nothing for the best for the team and the players. Shoot, I even have an autographed picture of Tony Romo playing against Carolina his first full game, framed and hanging in my living room. I hope I am wrong, but as of right now, I don't think he has what it will take to take this team to a Superbowl.
I'd like to focus on one point and one point only.

Ben Roethlisberger, 2
Jim Plunkett, 2
Bob Griese, 2
Doug Williams
Jim McMahon
Eli Manning
Phil Simms

That's 10 Super Bowls won by QBs who "occasionally have a great game but make the same mistakes." I feel I was conservative in the selection and it is still almost 25% of the Super Bowls won by QBs who are incapable of it by your definition.

I didn't even bring up guys like Dilfer, Brad Johnson, and Mark Rypien who are clearly lesser QBs than Tony Romo. How do you explain their wins and at the same time diagnose Tony as incapable? There is no honest way to do it.

Super Bowls are not won by QBs, they are won by teams. QBs get you there and he is talented enough to get us there. Denying that is nonsense. No honest man is going to look me in the eye and say Trent Dilfer was a better QB than Tony Romo is. I love Dilfer, but let's be realistic and not play Madden.

Romo is the single biggest reason we won today. If you come out and criticize him after that, you'll get ridiculed.

I'm not sure where people get the idea that they can voice an opinion and not be ridiculed for it?

I can see your point about the ridicule, and so forth. The "smacktard" comments and such aren't necessary, but outside of that, I think the OP got what he wanted, discussion-wise.

I apologized for the smacktard comments I made. I think you've missed out on his history though. He is not innocent, by any stretch.

You are the one being illogical, expecting a different outcome than last year, what has changed?

Its a logical fallacy to assume that because Romo has struggled in December a couple of years that he will do it every single year of his career. If you want to use logic. you're statement is categorically false.

Actually, the person you quoted is the first to call people in the thread who disagreed with the OP, smacktards..

This statement is more reasonable IMO. Romo may not be a guy who can throw 52 other players on his back and carry them to a SB. Definitely.

But in all of NFL history, how many of those guys were there? What are the odds that the next guy we bring in will be that magical QB who can carry a team?

Seems to me, the worry is about improving the rest of the team, not the QB who is one of the best in the league.

Well this will be my last post on this for now. I hope you guys are right and Romo wins us some Superbowls. I don't think this team is talented enough to cover up some of his mistakes that are (or at least have been) made in big games (and I think that is a big point in the argument and should have made that clearer initially on the Game thread), but maybe I am wrong about that or maybe those mistakes are a part of Romo's past. If Romo ends up playing a great December and January I will be thrilled to eat my words, call myself a smacktard, etc. etc. I just don't see it now.

As far as the bet, I could not have been happier to give up ten dollars. Maybe its wrong to bet "against your team" but I did so based solely on the last few games of last year and again was thrilled to give up the money.

In closing, I am an avid Cowboys fan, I don't think disagreeing on the future abilities of a QB makes me any less of a Cowboys fan. I still stand by my belieft that Romo won't be able to get this team to the Superbowl, but I really hope you guys are right and will be watching every Sunday hoping to be proven wrong.

yeah i did not feel the need to fully explain my opinion concerning Romo in the GAME THREAD. And actually I said that Romo would through a pic before the HALF was out trying to force the ball, thats not that outlandish if you watched many games last season...

Actually, you didn't.

I admit. I went to urbandictionary.com

A name believed to have originated from in game chat sessions within the immensely popular online game Battlefield 1942 (EA 2002). The name is applied to individuals who talk too much "smack" to the point where others might conclude that they are mentally challenged individuals (derogatory "tard").

A person that says or does things so unbelievably stupid that you feel the burning urge to smack them (repeatedly) upside the head.
