if you play the 3-2-6 aggressively on passing downs, you can blitz the hell out of the offense.
they would not know where the pressure is coming from just like the 46
Sure. Thats not the way its used in most cases. Its coverage based and gets burned. I hate a prevent defense. To me, its gutless.

hopefully, though i think i would be more confident with watt as a blitzing LB than taco as a DE for applying pressure.
especially in the 1st year.
in fact, that is probably an easier place to add pressure players than the DE given our draft position.
Assuming Jaylon can play, I'd rather blitz him than Watt. IMO, he'd be better than TJ. Let Lee play coverage. Speaking of coverage, Jaylon is 100 times better dropping back than Watt.

Truth is, no LB is going to blitz a lot here in Marinelli's 43, period. Watt would have been wasted at OLB here and he would have been a mis-fit for that spot in Dallas. Also, Watt is too small to be effective at DE in this system too.

That is why everyone and their brother says Watt didn't fit here. He's a 34 OLB at the most.

Finally, a blitz takes the offense by surprise... it is more of a scheme sack than anything else when it happens. You don't have to spend a first round pick on a 43 OLB that is going to blitz. 34? Sure, those are edge rushers. Not in a 43 though.

Charlton was a much, much better pick than Watt for this defense. For Pitt... Watt is much better.

Gotcha but that still doesn't change the fact that Marinelli is going to drop both LB's most of the time. He might send an occasional LB, but most of the time he rushes 3 and drops 8.

If you want to talk in hypothetically and talk about what some other defensive coordinator might do, then that's fine but it isn't going to happen. That hypothetical situation is why I said I'd rather send Jaylon Smith than Watt. If that is the case then you'd have Watt dropping into coverage which would be insane.

Basically, Lee is way, WAY better in coverage than Watt and, IMO, Smith is better getting after the QB. So... Watt would be silly, even in that scenario.

In the real world, Watt didn't fit this defense at all.

we have been talking about an aggressive 3-2-6 where there is a lot of blitzing of the 2 LBs and even DBs.

i think the agreement was - if we are going to lose, we want to KO the other QB.

No offense jday, but I thought most people realized why we started running that defense.

It also goes to show how Marinelli has had to adapt to sub-par talent.

As far as the blitzing argument or whatever, blitzing is actually detrimental when you can't get home. Most top QBs in the NFL have astronomical numbers against the blitz.

We were basically down to Mayowa, 98, Collins, and Irving who could rush the passer. The rest were either dinged or untalented and thus ineffective. And you have to rotate them.

The 3-2-6 got us picks and sacks. It's a very good formation to blitz from. Personally I would sugar the A gaps and rush at least 1 every down. Sending Jaylon, Lee, Heath, Chido, and Scandrick are all above average blitz options.

We got burned by a top 2 QB when we didn't blitz but I am in the camp that feels GB got away with multiple holds on that play as well.

I actually like the package but would prefer it to be more of a wrinkle. I understand why personnel forced their hand though. We should continue to refine it and practice it because it has resulted in significant plays for us.

So Taco played DE for his entire time in Michigan, had an ex-pro coach, and never was hurt... and Watt played TE, blew out two knees and played defense for only 1 year and Taco is the guy that needs developing?

lol, okay.

Waldo is irrational on the subject. It's not worth wasting your time.

i think LB and RB positions are the fastest to contribute from the draft.

I think it's a terrific scheme with the right players.

Woods had 3 sacks last season. Awuzie had 4 sacks last season. Combined with Scandrick, who's an excellent blitzer, the Cowboys have just given themselves more options on where a blitzer can come from.

In addition the top 2 corners drafted and Woods are all solid tacklers.

For those that have posted that Tapper and Taco were not effective in 3-man fronts, the big difference is that they were playing read & react 3-man fronts– And not the "rush the passer and ask questions later" type of front preferred by the DC.

When I started my research into the 3-2-6, reading various articles on it's applications, it occurred to me, as well, that the Cowboys were placing an emphasis on getting guys that would fit well in that scheme. Guy's who can blitz and blitz well from the slot, while simultaneously not being out of place in either Nickel, Outside, or Zone coverage. If you have those types of guys covering deep, a d coordinator can open up on blitzes.

I'm not sure I agree with the blanket statement that Marinelli will always drop 8 and blitz 3. In the link provided in the OP, Matt Moser provides several examples of blitzes Marinelli has used from 3-2-6.

With improved talent at every level on defense, he will likely call more.
