Tight End Speed

OmerV, you got me. Even though i showed it mathematically, you have convinced me that there is no way the "majority" of his catches could have been less than his average. The thought that one or two outliers per game could influence the average was just crazy talk.

I will admit I was off on the 3-4 yd claim (which was just off top of my head to illustrate a point). His average target (air travel) was 5.2 with his total average per target was 6.4.

Of course what you showed mathematically did not indicate what was intended. In any case, it appears you realize that 3-4 yards per catch was not the norm for Witten. As for the average per target interjected with this post, Witten's average was a little low compared to the better averages, just as his ypc was. The better TE's averaged about a yard per target more than Witten.

I wasn't sure If I should take you serious or not but with that last sentence you lost me. Rico is a novice with the right god given body. You've been fooled if you think that clown has Gronk-like skills. They are both muscular but Gronk knows how to use it and Rico does not.

Have you ever seen Rico look like he does not know how to use his skills or are you just betting on probability?

I also used the word POTENTIALLY to insure myself against a post like yours that was sure to come for telling me how stupid it is to compare them.

Really? Sounds more like you build a narrative to justify how you feel about Witten. Classic confirmation bias. The guy is a first round HOFer despite what you think about him.
The discussion wasn't about his career merits ...

Yes I have seen Rico look like he does not know how to use his skill... training camp last year.

"Potential" is a word used by hacks like you on a regular basis to serve the purpose exactly as you defined it. You don't want to be held to task for what you say. It's an ambiguous word that than cannot be challenged because it cannot be defined with context to how it is being used. "Rico has potential" We all have potential. You are the master of using maximum words to say the minimum. Take that for the call out it is and walk away. Otherwise you will get yourself further embarrassed.

We all are the masters of using maximum words to say the minimum. We are posters on a forum. Nobody wants to read a book long post from you or I.

So if you understand that the word potential is ambiguous and can't be challenged then why challenge it?

Rico is potentially a big body TE that can bully people for a football just like Gronk. I've seen him do it. Sorry I never witnessed him in training camp like you but from the limited amount I have seen in pre-season he has been awesome.

I do see the potential Gronk like skill set.. Sorry you can't. But that's what we do with young players. We project them to others we have seen succeed. You must hate the draft.

For all the "potential" you see in Rico, it hasn't helped him rise in the depth chart. The coaches have placed him 4th on the TE hierarchy. Maybe that will change during TC. If what you say is true, I would expect that change. But I don't expect that change.

It's not about "belief." There is actual technology that actually tracks the players' movement. It's not up for debate. If you think there was some extenuating circumstance that made Witten run extraordinarily fast for one brief second and some reason why Gronkowski never recorded a speed as fast at least 34 tight ends (likely more, given that I checked only 45) on any of his 69 catches, let's hear it.

No, I'll go one better, Poindexter. Prove it. Prove that Jason Witten ran faster. And don't link me to some stat geek website that doesn't mean a thing.

See unlike the peanut galley I don't just bow at whatever numbers you put forth as gospel. I don't need those numbers. I have eyes and a brain. Jason Witten in 2017 was one of the slowest TEs I've ever seen.

Again with the lame personal attacks. And you want proof, but you don't want to see the proof because it "doesn't mean a thing."

Believe whatever you want, I don't care. Your "eyes and brain" disagree with the NFL's high-tech system. Maybe the league should just ask you how fast players are instead.

Right, your proof is a random set of numbers with no substance behind it. Because it looks cool and stuff. Tells you what you want to hear. But when I ask you to prove those numbers are legit you just got nothing.

This is the problem with relying entirely on numbers to think for you. It makes you believe really, really stupid things like Jason Witten isn't s-l-o-w.

I'm sure that argument would work well if you got pulled over for speeding. "Those are just random numbers, officer. They don't mean anything. My eyes and brain tell me I was only going 35!" I bet that would hold up in court, too. You should try it.

Like I said, I don't care what you believe. The NFL uses high-tech equipment to track the location, speed and acceleration for every player on every play, and I'm certain the league doesn't care whether you think it's "really, really stupid," either.

Ummm. Nobody ignored Jason Witten once they knew he was the real deal. Witten did a great job of finding ways to get open. And you should check the stats for first downs for Witten. He was a first down machine. Your "tackled 3 yards short of the down marker," doesn't fly.

You are living in the ancient past. Ancient astronaut theorists agree.

I'm not sure how anyone could argue he isn't slow as ****.

Both players best ever time And he ran a 4.66 in 2016

Alexander Wright had 4.2 speed and I bet you don't even remember him. It pays to run the correct route and catch the darn ball too.

Wright wasn't a bad kick returner for us with that speed, but never amounted to much as a receiver.

And you're point is accurate. Blazing speed is an asset, no question, but hands and route running are actually higher priorities, assuming at least decent speed.
