Umm ... not always the case. We didn't know what we had in Tony Romo, Miles Austin, and Demarco Murray until we gave them a chance to play.
Not saying he is or he isn't but like others said coaches don't always get it right.
yeah well coaches saw and played Costa every day as well. It is not like they are infallible, are they?
Okay, so the coaches aren't always right. So what do you propose, exactly? That they look at the guys on the practice squad, say to themselves, "this guy looks really crummy, but what do I know?", bring them up from the practice squad (cutting somebody else) and throw them into a game to find out?

I think it's important to take a more holistic view of the defense. I think it's hard to say our points against/3rd down conversion %'s are better this year without giving credit to the pass rush. If our pass rush was so pitiful, those numbers simply wouldn't be where they are, they would be higher. And don't dismiss the eyeball test, opposing QBs have flat out looked uncomfortable back there. They're feeling the pressure, just watch how they act.

I'm suggesting the pass rush has been inconsistent and yet timely, not nonexistent. It could be better and that's not knocking the guys that are playing. There are 2 or 3 guys putting in work consistently, but that's out of 8 guys. That's not good enough. That said, the defense has shown some improvement, so I have hope it'll get better.

This.

My kid likes to bake. I let her bake my birthday cake; it was terrible. Did I prevent her from baking me another cake? No, the next cake was terrific!

All the intangibles that go into being a good football player may be there for Sam but without an opportunity we will never know. He may not be right for this system but maybe there is some defensive package that would allow him to be an effective pass rusher at some point in the season. I see no point in rushing him, however, if he is lacking in certain areas or is unable to contribute on STs.

Can our outside pass rush be any worse? Why not activate Sam and give him some 3rd down snaps? Just take Lavar Edwards active roster spot this week...

You make a good point. Lavar Edwards didn't do a hot dang thing.

I think we'll see some improvement as Spencer's explosion and confidence in his body comes back, and when Lawrence gets back. But yeah, I think MIchael Sam might be able to contribute eventually.

no, but the claim that coaches see them in practice and therefore that is all that matters is also BS

Yes, it could be worse and obviously Dallas thinks it would be if it activated Sam. Otherwise, the Cowboys would have activated Sam.

Broaddus says that if they moved a DE up from the practice squad that it would be Boatright, not Sam.

I can't imagine that he has earned his spot on an active roster, and thus, he is not on it...if the are going to put him on an active roster, I could see it in London...they play one of the worst teams in the league and then get a bye...that is almost a perfect storm of less media coverage at least...

I don't think Jerry is worried about media coverage. Just think how many extra national interviews Jerry could get if Sam was promoted. ;)

In 2014 I don't think anyone really cares. NBA has a gay player and for the life of me I don't even remember the guys name and frankly does not matter. Bottom line can you play this game at a high enough level and help your team? If you can welcome to the team, if not then like thousands of plays past and present see you later.

There are so many things wrong with this post. So many No's. And No Yes's. We will rue the day he gets activated. I'm hoping that day never comes.

I have a different opinion of this. I might be wrong but I think Sam could be our best pass rusher TODAY. I think they are scared to put him on the roster and play him because they are worried that the media will be a distraction and could hurt team chemistry and mess up the roll they are on. I think they will call him up AFTER the lack of pass rush actually hurts us bad enough that we lose a game because of it.

I think Jerry remembers how badly "Hard Knocks" messed up that season for us. I think he is avoiding the distraction until he absolutely has to improve the pass rush.

Does the question presuppose that Sam will suddenly throw a switch and have a pass rush that he doesn't have in practice? Come on; if he was showing tobe even one of the best four pass rushers on the team, he'd get a shot. Let's let him develop.

We have pressured QBs every week, moving them off their spots, getting in their faces, rushing throws, and getting some hits....until the Giants game. This week versus Washington, we will see if that was an aberration or if it will be a problem for us. We need to keep moving with that push up the middle, along with stopping the run.

This for sure in my book. We're a containment defense right now. First keep the QB in the pocket and add pressure to force bad throws. Yes sacks are sexy and I wish we had more of them but they also sell out to lose containment in some/most cases which could cause a big pass play down field. We do not have the corners or safeties to sustain coverage for that long (when a qb scambles). I almost threw up on Mannings turtle scramble for a first down and that's what happens when you lose containment. Did you see Marinellis response on that play? He was going ballistic. That was how we beat Seattle on defense and that is how we're eliminating the big play.

This is 2014 where guys can marry guys and woman can marry woman. There are gay athletes in all sports, I think for the most part society has stepped beyond it. I really don't think commentators would make it an issue, it's part of every day life, except for a few.

You guys have to remember who you are dealing with... Jerry Jones...

He's gonna make him active, but it won't be for a noon regional game...

Probably Thanksgiving against Philly or against the Colts... another national game...

He's gonna showcase it...

What are we, ranked 10th in scoring defense? We have a top ten defense right now. My eyes tell me that and the most important statistical metric tells me that. And the pass rush is part of that. Sacks are about as telling as interceptions -- sure they're nice, but they don't come close to giving a complete picture. Take the Seattle game -- I think our defensive front held back to a certain extent because if you're TOO aggressive, Wilson will run right by you. They played very solid D, stayed in their lanes, did not allow Wilson outside the pocket (for the most part). Our defensive front played a terrific game, Wilson turned indecisive, had nowhere to run, and played one of the worst games of his career as a result. Again, scoring defense is a stat that gives you a pretty holistic view of how the defense is doing -- I have a hard time believing our ranking would be that high if our pass rush was as non-threatening to opposing QBs as you say it is.
