What is there to hang your hat on? Nothing has changed. Same team it's been for the past X amount of years.

This is not sarcasm, it's an actual question.

How can anyone really believe that this team is capable of ever doing anything. We constantly embarrass ourselves and are constantly the laughingstock of the league.

The worst part is there is no easy fix for any of the litany of issues.

I feel like things might get better if everyone would stop constantly buying the false hope and just accept who this team is. It might make trying to make the drastic changes to fix it a little easier than always believing we might have a shot only to ALWAYS be let down.

Thoughts?

I agree with most of this but I really think there is an easy fix. Just hire a good head coach.

I’m a “homer” - which on this web site means I’m working today instead of standing on a bridge preparing to jump. What I “hang my hat on” is that this team with all its problems and injuries will still win the Division.

Since the salary cap was instituted about 95% of NFL teams are within a whisker of a .500 record – up or down. The only way to get significantly above that is to 1) build through multiple drafts, 2) avoid injuries and 3) catch some breaks. The Cowboys are doing #1 and three drafts into building a very good base. Injuries have killed them this year so there is no chance of them being a really good team while they play Defensive Lineman who are street free agents and have small school rookies in key secondary roles. On top of that every team in the NFL is going to have a couple of games that are a disaster – and last night was a major one.

So if you think a 7-6 team is a “laughingstock”, I disagree. If you think you are going to see a Hall of Fame TE drop easy passes every week, I disagree. If you think the Cowboys are going to play every year with DTs and Safeties they found on Craigslist can be easily exploited, I disagree.

We have a top 5 QB and any team can get hot. Is it likely? No. Am I personally hopeful? No.

But there's still a shot.

I agree with most of this but I really think there is an easy fix. Just hire a good head coach.

I heard Tim Hasselback say last night that the problem with the Commanders is that Snyder undermines the coach. He said when he was with the Skins, the defensive coach benched Bruce Smith because he wasn't a consistent player anymore. Bruce Smith replies, "No, you're not. I'm going for the sack record."
Smith marches into Snyder's office and tells Snyder the situation. Guess what? Smith is playing the next game.
Hasselback says as long as your players know your coach doesn't have the final say, there's going to be a level of disrespect for the coach, and that has a subtle and direct impact on a team.

We are structured in a similar way. The only reason Parcells came aboard is because he convinced Jerry to step back and allow him to run the show. But Jerry got that itch again, brought T.O. in (over Parcells' objection, even though Parcells wink, wink agreed with the move) and started to exert himself again into football matters. And pretty soon, Parcells had enough and left.

Jerry will not hire a coach who won't allow him to be who he is, i.e., an owner who wants to be seen as a football man, a G.M.

So you're going to get the Wade Phillips and the Jason Garretts of the world, coaches who are desperate for their shot and will play "Yes man" to Jerry.

We're not going to get anyone serious in here, only puppets. And that means no good head coaches. :(

Don't stop fans from being optimistic. Let the come to the conclusion that 8-8 will be our future indefinitely on their own.

7-6. The wins were against The New York Giants (twice), St. Louis Rams , Washington Commanders, Philadelphia Eagles ( when they were just 3-3), Minnesota Vikings & Oakland Raiders. The Cowboys aren't a good team. We just beat the bad ones. I wonder what our record would be in the NFC West?

Thought 1 is how is 8-8 a laughingstock?
Please go follow the Commanders.
They like logical folks like you.

This team is mediocre.
It is has been battered by injuries a couple years in a row and fought and clawed to .500.

We can argue about how smart that is.
But there are 8 games a year where the other team darn friggin sure isn't laughing.

Not arguing, but if the OP says we are a "laughingstock", what does that make the Giants, Rams, Commanders, Eagles, Vikings and Raiders?

I think there was a better way to handle asking this question.

I feel the thread topic is provoking and unnecessarily elicits a negative response.

Those teams AREN'T AMERICA'S TEAM! And we ARE the laughingstock because the rest of those teams don't always point at themselves every an say "look at me" only to embarrass themselves year in and year out.

Worse.

We're bad, they're worse.

Nobody can be surprised as it has been this team's pattern for the past several years and has been clearly brought up time and time again.

Some fans just refused to believe what their lyin' eyes told them.

Fandom clouds judgement.

The tragedy is that the Cowboys truly have a good offense.

The defense is one of last man standing.

Are we a playoff team. No way.
Can we be one? I don't see how. The window is closing on Romo, Witten, Ware.
In 2 years we will be trying to patch up a lot of holes. Like you, I just don't see any quick fixes and lots of more embarrassments thanks to jerra and his brainbust.

Then please help me out and articulate the question better.

I would have said, "what are your reasons left for optimism"?

Leaving out the 'homers' designation.

You and I are on the same side of this fence, but labeling and name-calling only invites negative reactions.
