"grip on Center"...isnt up yet on DMN, but the headline is..

was also brought up in Mickeroo's latest at Cowboy website...Gurode is looking strong at C and apparently Jones suggested an alternating C plan might be in the works again

Seeing that they have not had pads on since the end of last season, I'd find it hard to believe that anything has been determined.

Gurode had a decent rokkie season at center. If I remember correctly, people were pretty high on him moving out to guard because of his performance at center.

I never thought they should have moved him. I like Johnson a lot. Worst case senario, both guys play well and we have some depth for a change.

May the best man win....

Johnson hasn't impressed me that much....unlike some here who think he was at the brink of becomming a pro-bowler...

There was a reason we got man handled last year up the middle and everyone piled on Gurode. Johnson should of took some of the blame.

Would of hated to see Johnson win the job because it was just given to him.

I'm right there with you. Johnson comes up empty on a lot of his blocks. Not very agile when he has to hit a moving target and any kind of interior motion or blitz gets him lost. I want to chalk it up to his inexperience in what was essentially his rookie year, but he needs to take quite a few more steps before the position is considered secure in my eyes.

I don't think he had as good of a year as you do, but you have a point.

That year was a total trainwreck. We had players starting one week, having heartattacks the next. It was terrible.

Maybe Gurode has a shot.

But I think Al did a great job last year considering he sat for a year. I just find it hard to believe he is falling behind.

The only thing I can think of is that Gurode is a better run blocker. That is Al's weakness and at center, Gurode does not have to move and can simply fire off.

Except we pull with our center a lot. Jones is more of an off tackle runner and movement will come into play. Any type of rotation would be a dead giveaway to what play we are running or we would be running a play not suited to the personnel on the field.

So a guy who lost his job to Ben Noll last season, has underachieved for 3 years, has suddenly jumped in the mix to start at center after one mini-camp?

I smell propaganda. We are looking to move him for a pick is my bet.

Kudos for Gurode if he could pull that off.
The bottom line was that Johnson wasn't that good. Just because he was a 2nd round pick and was given the starting spot over a vet like Walter isn't saying much...he had no competition at C the past two years (even before the injury). He was an average starter, but I didn't get all the excitement about him last season...he certainly was not dominant or nasty in any way shape or form...just a guy who was smart enough not to screw the blocking up. He'll never be a pro bowl type center, so if gurode can beat him out this year, it does indeed mean that johnson is not all that.

Where are all the Johnson critics coming from? Al took about a day to become a starter, got raves from Ron Wolf, played very well last year, and now he's borderline any good after one vet minicamp?

Al is fine.

If anyone thinks Gurode can take his job, well---I have this bridge for sale.

saying the guy is just average is not criticism....who did al johnson have to compete with at center for the past 2 years?

he's a decent player who got the job done...lots of them in the nfl, but he's not even close to the centers we've had over the years like manders, donaldson, stepnoski, and even kennard....he's just a guy who may very well get beat out at some point in his career, even this year...that's not criticism, just an observation of his ability.

most guys who play guard can also play center if needed...they are better athletes (when kennard couldn't play guard any longer, he was a very effective center for 2-3 years)....how many centers, other than the superstars, could play OG?

It's dis-information, it's what we want to put out to the media.

Since Parcells has been here how many players touted during the offseason and TC actually did anything?

Witten, Jones and...

We find out what they want us to know most of the time.

I'm surprised that no one has approached the idea that perhaps Gurode has stepped it up during the offseason and is now beginning to realize the potential that made him a 2nd round pick.

Could be?

And that shows in one mini-camp in shorts, enough to say he will challenge Johnson to start?

Uh, no.

Propaganda, looking for a trade partner.

What this really says is Tarullo looked good in two mini-camps and is in fact pushing Gurode as back up.

You guys are so weird.

It's like you're taking sides with Al Johnson or with Andre Gurode

news flash people: they're both on our team

everyone should be happy that Gurode is improving.. not angry that a white center might get unseated by a black center

hahah, just kidding about that one

this is what we all should say: let the best man win b/c either way, the best man is on our team.

You know what BZ you're right.

I'm sure that GM's and personnel people around the league are crashing the servers at DC.com to read Mickey’s articles trying to cipher out any conspiracies, hidden agenda's, and sub plots.

Because JJ doesn’t have enough contacts in the league he has to have a stooge plant hints, winks and nods in an article for other teams to learn that a player is on the trade block.

Better chance that Gurode is cut than make 53 man. Talk of him starting at Center is nonsense.

At best motivation for Al Johnson or to prop a trade.

I really really doubt they cut Gurode...he isnt a scrub, contrary to what soem fools think here
