I have (hopefully) summarized the differing opinions of what participating members think is a movie villain in the list below. These opinions will make up a special 24-hour poll. The opinion receiving the most votes will be the guideline for members nominating characters for their lists. Members can start posting their official ballot lists following the results of the special poll.

Definition of 'Movie Villain':
  1. Live action, speaking human actor (ex: Hans Gruber, Dr. No)
  2. Live action, semi-performing [voice over, etc.] human actor (David Prowse as Darth Vader)
  3. Live action, overly altered appearance human actor (The Predator, Davey Jones)
  4. Live action, special effects/CGI based artificial performer (shark in Jaws, Thanos)
  5. Animation based performer (The Red Hood, Scar)
  6. All of the above

During the poll period, members will be allowed to change their vote in the event another member(s) posts a dissenting opinion which alters their original definition of movie villain.

__________________________________________

Unlike movie genres, my own strongly held opinion can be found by clicking here--so I will cast my vote immediately instead of my usual grace period before voting in a poll after creating one.

How does anyone feel about disqualifications? I am asking because there may be ballot lists posted that do not follow the guideline set for what a movie villain is as defined by the current poll. In other words, a member might nominate a character or characters that will not receive points and not be counted in the tallying of the ballot lists.

One last clarification before logging off. Here are the outcome scenarios for the poll:

  1. If the examples of movie villain receiving the most votes are Hans Gruber and Dr. No, characters like Hans Gruber and Dr. No will be eligible for the tournament and no other type of character will be eligible for the tournament.
  2. If the example of movie villain receiving the most votes are David Prowse as Darth Vader, characters like Hans Gruber, Dr. No and David Prowse as Darth Vader will be eligible for the tournament and every other type of character will not be eligible for the tournament.
  3. If the examples of movie villain receiving the most votes are The Predator and Davey Jones, characters like Hans Gruber, Dr. No and David Prowse as Darth Vader, The Predator and Davey Jones, will be eligible for the tournament and every other type of character will not be eligible for the tournament.
  4. If the examples of movie villain receiving the most votes are the shark in Jaws and Thanos, characters like Hans Gruber, Dr. No and David Prowse as Darth Vader, The Predator, Davey Jones, the shark in Jaws and Thanos will be eligible for the tournament and every other type of character will not be eligible for the tournament.
  5. If the examples of movie villain receiving the most votes are the shark in The Red Hood and Scar, every previously listed type of character will be eligible for the tournament.

Here are several generic lists about movie villains, compiled by (what I think are) popular entertainment-centric sites:

Entertainment Weekly, "50 Most Vile Movie Villains" https://ew.com/gallery/50-most-vile-movie-villains/
Empire, "The Greatest Villains Of All Time" https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/best-movie-villains/
USA Today, "The 50 most popular movie villains of all time, ranked" https://www.usatoday.com/story/life...st-popular-movie-villains-all-time/711609002/
The Hollywood Reporter, "Hollywood's 25 Favorite Villains" https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/l...27/item/favorite-villains-agent-smith-1127906

I did not post these as "proof." Anyone could locate, confirm and post all kinds of lists about movie bad guys from the internet. Rather, I offer these for the discussion because it further illustrates a clearly discernible non-constrained opinion about movie characters, playing the role of antagonist, that is shared among movie lovers.

I don't understand why you lump Jaws and Thanos together. I understand they're both CGI/Mechanical, but Thanos is an intelligent, humanoid being, intent on wiping out half the population of the universe (villain), whereas Bruce the Shark is running on instinct (non-villain). The aliens in Aliens are trying to propagate their species, regardless of how evil they seem (non-villain). The aliens in Independence Day are trying to wipe out every civilzation they encounter. (villain)

I think malice needs to be considered in order to determine if someone is villainous.

I understand why you question my 'lumping' Jaws and Thanos together. I also understand both your and everyone else's definitions of movie villains.

All of the summarized opinions listed in the poll quantify the exceptions some movie fans feel are true in defining a movie villain. The options are neither exact definitions nor do they represent all the perceived particulars some movie fans have for movie villains.

My imperfect solution for determining 'what is a movie villain' is simply to provide a more uniform agreement of a definition so the thread can push past questioning and proceed forward towards the actual tournament. The poll may or may not satisfy anyone but it will help getting the ball rolling.

My opinion of the poll is that it is completely unnecessary. I do not share the disagreements I have heard or read from some movie fans for many years about who should or should not be seen or accepted as villains in movies, television, radio, print, etc. As I have indicated twice before in the thread (three times counting my inference with the lists post), for me, a villain is an character or characters, who are an antagonist or antagonists to a story's protagonist or 'hero'. I do not make distinctions about any character's (villain, hero, other) appearance, the uniqueness of their motivations, their place of origin, how much screen time they had, their quantity of dialogue or lack thereof, living breathing celebrity or a two-dimensional representation or mechanical mechanism, or so on.

I am not questioning who or what is a movie villain. I want to either post a ballot list or modify a ballot list, put a tournament together, play a few rounds and name a champion. Lumpiing Jaws and Thanos together was my way of five different ways of possibly identifying the this's or that's some people (not you of course) might consider relevant for a 'correct' qualification for movie villain.

My problem with the options as listed is that if someone rejects Jaws, they automatically lose Thanos as an option.

TBH, I don't really think it matters anyway. People should just list whoever they want as a villain, because if enough posters agree, that character will go on. If nobody agrees, the character will be omitted. It pretty much resolves itself, unless there's a tie.

Having Jaws or Thanos as a villain makes no sense to me, it is the art of portraying a villain by an actor. That's like nominating the eye in LotR as a villain and overlooking Christopher Lee.

Want to do non human villain, that's different but not in the same face off.

Thanos was portrayed by an actor. There's just a lot of CGI added to him.

Sometimes I put my faith in people to do what I feel is the right thing, even if the same people may equally feel what I think is right is the wrong thing. There are times when my faith in others is disappointing and there are times when I feel my faith in others is rewarding.

It may just be gas but I think this will be one of those times I will feel good when the poll closes. Now if I only had one of @Reverend Conehead 's fancy schmancy time machines to whisk me to 10:58 pm that much quicker. :muttley:

You can probably end it now, nine votes in and there isn’t much more who vote. All of the above option won’t be overtaken

Answer: Because it is the hero that usually wins in the end and not the villain?

Now, cowboyec. That is like you would want Clinty to lose gunfights all the time. Shame on you!
i didnt say i hated it.
im just surprised mr movie buff didnt use the joker eluding capture...or something like that.
even with no hands...the man with no name would win the gun fight.

The poll has spoken. Any character antagonist can be considered as a movie villain.

Ballot list submission can officially begin. See post 1 for ballot list guidelines. Deadline for ballot lists is Tuesday, July 21 at 9:00 pm CDT.

IMPORTANT!

If your favorite movie villain is a character who has been portrayed by different actors in different movies, please specify the movie your nominee played in. For example:

Nominee: The Joker

Batman (1989) - Jack Nicholson

The Dark Knight (2008) - Heath Ledger

Suicide Squad (2016) - Jared Leto
