Trade Dak Prescott Debate

I've seen one too many "Dak is better than Romo" threads lately, and I don't want to continue that stupid argument. As of today and probably for the next 3 years, Romo is the best player on the team, hopefully Dak is so great that he will be better and then we'd have a great problem in our hands, but in the mean time let's be realistic and be happy with Romo as our field general.

So here's a new debate, I thought of this today:

The Rams, Eagles and Broncos call you today, and they offer you Goff, Wentz and Lynch respectively straight up for Dak. Would you do it? Why, or why not?

That would be like hitting the lottery and then trading it for a ticket in the next lottery...

I'd trade Dak in a heartbeat for Khalil Mack, Mario Edwards Jr, Karl Joseph , Bruce Irvin, and a first rd pick. Absolutely no questions. Boom done deal and go ahead and hand us the Lombardi Trophy. Thank you very much, come again.

I mean, if someone offered a decent 1st rounder for him, maybe. Other than that, I'd rather him sit and learn behind Romo for a couple years, and hopefully be good when it's his time.

What "decent 1st rounder" could possibly give us what Dak already has? If he continues the way he's been playing, no 1st rounder would be worth it. We may have our next franchise QB in our back pocket. No way I'm trading that for a "decent 1st rounder". Those post Aikman YEARS should still weigh heavy on all our minds.....

I think the analogy would be that you played the lottery where have get all 6 numbers to win.
So far you found out you for sure got 1 (or maybe even 2!) of the 6, and little by little you'll know, at long odds, if you got all of the rest.
:D

So far so good, but a loooong way from knowing if you won.

Using that same analogy: With the draft picks you don't know for sure if you even have one number.

I would jump all over Lynch and a second round pick.

At worst, we've found our backup QB for the next 4+ years. At best, we've found Romo's successor. Why mess that up?

I take your point, though I would argue we've got 4 numbers,,, and we can develop the other 2.

I've thought about this scenario as well. In a purely clinical approach, business approach, if you can get more value for a player than he is worth to your team.... you should consider the trade. Preseason performance hype could qualify. However, having a starting caliber quarterback commands a high price. As the draft trades showed, teams are willing to pay that price.

Yet to have a starting caliber quarterback on your roster is one thing, having that starting caliber quarterback filling a backup role while being groomed for a not too distant transition is another altogether... Well, there's very few trade offers that would replace the benefit Dak Prescott appears to be headed for on this team. Herschel Walker type crazy trade offer would be about the only thing, and even that could be a trade that is regretted in the end.

Another ignorant thread. This place is getting painful.

If you are a GM and haven't entertained these types of wild proposals then you aren't doing your job

Luck = Opportunity + Preparation

Some truth to this...

Brett Favre was a 2nd round QB from a mid-conference (Southern Miss) that threw all of 5 passes his rookie season in Atlanta, 2 of them for interceptions. He was overweight and had a drinking problem.

Ron Wolf went against all conventional wisdom that is considered holy in the NFL and traded a 1st round pick for the guy. If it happened today I'm sure the moaning / complaining in Wisconsin would have broken the internet.

In that case, "Luck = Opportunity + Preparation" actually worked out.

It's almost like some are trying to come up with the most ridiculous thread topics imaginable to see the reaction they get.

It does beg an overarching question that is rather interesting: At what point does performance against NFL competition outweigh/override your pre-draft scouting report? I'd love to know a scout's take on this.

I was watching the NFL Network this morning, and for the second straight week they named Dak the week's MVP. So he has effectively been the MVP the last 3 times he has stepped on a football field.

Enough new information is beginning to pile up to rewrite Dak's draft-day positioning, if such a thing could be redone.
