2013 Pass Rating by Target (Romo only)
Witten 61 of 93 716 yd 8 td 0 int 117.5
Williams 42 of 69 679 yd 5 td 2 int 105.9
Bryant 85 of 142 1150 yd 12 td 3 int 105.1
Murray 48 of 55 311 yd 1 td 0 int 96.3
Beasley 38 of 49 361 yd 2 td 2 int 94.0
others 68 of 127 611 yd 3 td 3 int 64.8
That doesn't tell the whole story. You have to include YPA in that, and my quick math is telling me that Witten's is significantly lower than Dez and Williams.

It would accelerate 8.6M in dead money that we don't have to toy around with

YPA is already included in pass rating. That's why pass rating correlates more highly to wins. It includes yards, attempts, completions, TD, and INT.

YPA is simply yards and attempts.

I know, and I don't like that. :)

It doesn't account for Yac, and I don't like that either.

It's seemingly the talk of NFL podcasts and draft websites with plenty of teams likely to desire his services and us desperately in need of cap space. So, would you do it? If so what would it take? I think a high 2nd rounder would be enough given this draft class. He'll be 32 at the start of next season and can't have many more seasons left in the tank.

We will figure out the cap. We always do. It's always a boogeyman story for clicks.

You would not get more than a 4th for Witten at this stage of his career.

I disagree. Every "analyst" thinks we can pull in a second/third. Plenty of teams would love Witten, most "analysts" think he can have a Tony G Falcons-like run with another team and to many that'd be worth a 2nd/3rd, particularity those with young QBs... although I've heard NE mentioned with the Hernandez disaster and Gronks crazy injuries. It actually makes a lot of sense for both sides.

Building on this - the more I think of it the more a Witten to NE trade makes sense. Witten and a 6th for NE's 2nd, Belichick keeps his precious number of picks and adds Witten, who'd instantly become Brady's #1 target. Brady likely doesn't have more than 3-4 years in him which makes Witten's age not a huge factor. When Gronk is healthy they'd have a deadly duo at TE which would open up their sub-par WR's, plus they keep their first to add young talent at receiver. For us even a late second would likely have me pull the trigger. Right now we're likely #4-#5 at TE, with Hanna and Escobar we're #10 or so but that's fine with me as we'd have the picks to potentially come away with 2 d-linemen, a safety and a guard that can be day one starters in the first three rounds.

Plus maybe not a big factor but it'd appease Cowboys fans who don't want to see Witten moved - it's not like we're sentencing him to Jacksonville, we'd be sending him to the best team of the last dozen years or so. He'll be able to certify his ticket to Canton with 3 years in New England.

His value to the Cowboys is more than what we could get in a trade. Keep him.

I'll look at it this way......
Pros
1. We are not going anywhere with or without Witten
2. It could gain us a potential 2nd round pick
3. Possible salary cap relief
4. He has lost a step from slow to turtle
5. It might open up the offense a bit more instead of being the primary

Cons
1. There is no one worth his weight behind him to take his place....yet
2. We would probably not get a 2nd, 3rd at best
3. He runs good routes and makes defenses concentrate on him
4. Whatever draft pick we get, what is the chances a good player is picked?
5. He is the main reason my wife watches football. Trade him and my Sunday's might not be the same :(

Well, tied at 5-5.......................still in a quandary over this one, so I will say NO to a trade. He is worth more to us that some middle round pick.

Again you would not get more than a 4th round pick for Witten which I wouldn't take so he's more valuable in a Cowboys uniform to me... I thought I'd clear that up.

He'll be 32 at the start of the season and has visibly slowed down. He's still a good pass catcher and blocker, but Dallas won't get a 2nd round pick for him. At this point, Dallas is better off trying to renegotiate the terms of his contract and keep him on to help develop Escobar.

According to ProFootballFocus Witten averaged 4.6 YAC/Reception, which was his highest going as far back as they have data available (2008). Jimmy Graham, who is the prototype explosive tight end, averaged 4.8 YAC/Rec.

For Tight Ends Witten also had the 3rd most receptions amongst all tight ends on targets of 20 yards downfield or more.

It would mean less cap space, not more, with the accelerators

If we traded Witten the entire league would laugh at us.

Oh wait they already do, why not add more fuel to the fire.

Sometimes I just wonder...

Witten has made so many clutch catches for the Cowboys over the years his contributions seem impossible to undervalue, yet, here we are again.

Anyway, I say NO to trading Witten based on his value to the team, and as a practical matter, we have no one to replace him anyway. Just no.

I believe I said this in the "trade ware?" Thread as well: as long as he's a top 5 team jersey seller he will stay

I'd do it in a heartbeat for a high second, but that's not happening. I'd consider it for a high three.

No way.
That high 3rd has a better chance of being tossed into a trashcan than equaling Witten's performance from this point on.
Even at his current age.

My God Man!

I would love an early 3rd round pick. We already have Escobar after Jerry was ready for this. Build the defense this season. Throw in Ware for nothing.
