:muttley: :muttley: :muttley: The reason SF only got a 4th for him was because of his film in SF..
Coaching makes a difference McFly.
You can coach a kid up to learn reading defenses, technique, etc Lance's problems will be that he'll never learn to adjust to the speed of the game. He played in a Div 2 conference in college where not a single DB in the conference was drafted. The speed will just overwhelms him.. He'll never be able to over come that in practice or even in preseason games.. He might be able to become a good safety.

Next years draft is deep at QB, don't see anyone trading for Lance especially without seeing what improvements he may have made. This means no trade before training camp.

If he has made significant growth why flip him, as likely not going to drafting a QB next year since you gave a 4th up for him.

No, he was a trade for upside and let's see if he can be developed.

My speculation is, Jerry trusts Mike so much with turning a QB into a player, and watching how much hes helped Dak improve this year, Jerry got Trey Lance as a flip project. Have Mike fix him, then flip him for premo picks to a desperate team.

It shows how much Jerry believe in M
So with little to no trade interest this season accept Jerry, on his own, you think Lance sitting out another year will make him more valuable?

Trey is a waste of $5M and a 4th round pick.

Don't need to be a scout to have common sense. His stats in HS were none existent. He was not recruited - listed as an athlete(not a QB on his visits). Only played 1 legit year in college at a lower level. Was drafted by a team that had everything around him to make him successful with time to develop - and it did not work. He could not even secure the back up role.

Jerry took a gamble looking for oil.

Who is going to pay Trey Lance $25 million for his 5th year option he is due after the 2024 season?

Dumb trade by Jerry.

Lance is going to demand he get paid or take his chances elsewhere after 2024. He is due $5.3 million in 2024. Who in their right mind pays $5.3 million for a 3rd stringer, much less a backup QB?

Maybe? I hope we a long look at Lance next preseason to gauge his progress.

How many of those Missouri Valley Conference athletes were QBs who made it to the NFL? I believe Carson Wentz was the only one. How did he turn out? Wince is sitting at home wondering why no team wants him currently in the NFL. Doesn't look good at all about what quality of QBs come out of the Missouri Valley Conference, does it?

The shrewdest brain trust in the NFL let him go for a pittance. There must be a reason they gave up on him.
Showcase the lad in the preseason, let Mickey blow gas about Lance and try to unload him for a 2nd or 3rd

Up until the last six games I would've said he's Dak's replacement in the next 2-3 years, but if Dak keeps going like this they will try to flip him for sure.

Not sure Trey Lance is anything other than another Jerry QB Project in the mold of Hutchinson, Quincy, and Drew Henson.

But if he were to come along, I would try to keep him for a low price. He has as a similar skillset as Dak so offense won't need much adapting.

Dak is bound to get hurt at some point with him over 30 and still running. Odds eventually catch up.

If week 17 means nothing, he should play. Dak’s improvement has made the trade look ridiculous. They need to find a way to showcase him so they can try and trade him during next years draft to a team who misses out on the QBs. Unless you make him the backup next year, that $5.3 million salary can’t be justified. The only other move is to sign him to an extension for backup money and if he refuses, you are going to have to cut him. It looks like a mess right now but we all have to remember at the time, Dak was not playing great and it was a small insurance policy for if Dak wouldn’t negotiate to a reasonable deal. I’ll gladly eat that 4th rounder if Dak continues on like he is now.

If a team makes an overwhelming offer for any player, you have to listen and consider. If Rush is gone next season and someone wants Lance, Cowboys will have to find a number 2.

I'd play him against Washington if we can't advance our playoff seeding.
This is the only realistic possibility. If there is nothing to gain in that final game, they would likely start Rush and then bring in Lance at some point. They're not doing anything prior to Week 18.

I thought everyone just praised MM for coaching up Dak this year. QB guru they said.

If he's a good athlete, a good coach should be able to...bring him up to speed. (pardon that one! :) )

Most Teams have a starter, back-up, and developmental QB. If you can develop him why trade him? The Way QBs are getting hurt the last couple of years, why get rid of him?

Until we see the makings of Dak's new contract, there can't be a clear picture as to what the plan is for him. It's not like Trey was a hot commodity when we traded for him, and he hasn't seen a snap nor will until next training camp. He will start for us next Summer and if he shines could be a flip...

Here is what scares me with Dak's new contract: prrof is out there with Patty and KC that if your QB takes up a whack of your cap, you have to weaken yourself elsewhere. We have a few contracts to do upcoming, so how can we keep this core group together? If we don't win this year, can we afford to keep our guys?

And no team is going to trade their 2025 4th round pick (what the Cowboys gave up to the Forty-niners) or higher, for Lance doing mop-up duty during the 2024 season.
It’s not about mop up duty. To me it’s about what he does in camp and pre season next year. We never play our starters and he’s paid too much to be a the 3rd. He will get the reps to show he’s a viable backup. If he shows enough he might even get an extension and if a nice offer came so be it. But right now it’s about building him into a viable backup next year
