Look at Jordan Love with the Packers. Kid was super green, if he would have been thrown to the fire right away it would have been a disaster. Not all QBs are created equal. Some need time to develop.

This is a perfect situation for him to sit back develop and who knows.
Right. And people seem to forget Mahomes spent his first year as under-study to Alex Smith. Add that to being drafted by an Andy Reid coached team.

His arm, athleticism and size. He was drafted at 20 years of age. The ultimate developmental prospect.
His throwing motion is terrible. Sidearm throw with his elbow hitched close to his body. No wonder his passes sail high, creates a low completions percentage, struggles to make tight window throws and needs receivers wide open.

This just for starters. There is more he struggles badly at. The 49ers figured this out after 2 years and recently demoted him to 3rd string. They are likely ecstatic they were able to find a trade partner and get a 4th round pick for him.

Every QB has good plays. Even Dak haters admit that Dak plays well at times but also does bad plays.

My concern with Lance is he has very limited starting experience and so far in the NFL he hasn't been that good. Again, he was skilled enough to be drafted 3rd over all. You expect some good plays just from pure athleticism. It's not a Ryan Leaf situation.

I think this trade is good for him. He comes here with minimal expectations and so he can learn. There no pressure.

It's also good for Cowboys. We have only invested a 4th rounder.

I hope for his sake. And our sake he turns out to be good. We get a couple of years to find out
He is 2-2 as a starter in the NFL. Let's not act like he hasn't had any good plays at all.

I agree with you about no pressure and Dallas has a couple of years to see if he improves or not

I don’t think the 49ers were ecstatic about trading 3 first round picks plus for a 4th. I don’t think that San Francisco think the kid is any good though. We will see. Next preseason he will be the hot ticket for the preseason games.

Very true, bro.

I hope someone works to change Trey Lance's throwing motion. It would do wonders for his accuracy. Back in the offseason of 2018, Dak changed his throwing motion and full body mechanics to help his passing game and accuracy.

It did wonders for him in terms of accuracy, tight-window throws and production. He definitely became a better passer and an all-around better QB.

I truly hope Trey Lance follows in Dak's footsteps and accompanies Dak to seek better mechanics, throwing and accuracy training with former NFL quarterback John Beck alongside 3DQB's Tom House and Adam Dedeaux. If Trey Lance can make a transformational change with his throwing motion, mechanics, footwork and physical understanding, I believe he can definitely become a much more accurate and better passer for the future. I hope Jerry and the Cowboys pay for Lance to get improved in case Dak keeps playing hardball and asks for much more in pay during the next contract extension talks, especially if Dak has a lights out season this year and/or next. It's become ridiculous to keep paying such ever increasing astronomical prices for a franchise QB these days.

Well, now that I've had a chance to see the kid. It's obvious he doesn't belong in the WCO, he belongs in a timing based offense. He has accuracy and arm. He operates best in pocket and struggles on the move . But 3 to 5 steps and get the ball out and in a year he'll shine. We could have really rolled upon a gem here.
Somebody's in Jerry's ear, besides Jerry. FINALLY!

I agree with the grooming process. Love has yet to prove the grooming worked.

Trey Lance: World class athlete, but can't process the game of football.

Wow..........Wow..........Wow!!!!!!!????????

TREY LANCE SUCKS!!!!!

After watching the first 2 videos since they are the most recent games (Preseason 1 and 2 of 2023) and shows exactly what this guy is as a QB after 2 years in the NFL, Trey Lance has no business in the NFL as a starter or a backup! This guy is horrible!!! No wonder the 49ers demoted him to 3rd string and were eager to find a suckered team to trade for this major bust!

SMDH :banghead: What was Jerry and the front office thinking willing to get rid of Will Grier for this dud??? To top it off, you trade a 4th round pick for this mess? No other team was willing to offer a 6th (condition to turn into a 5th) round pick for this mess. Yet, so many of Cowboys Nation is happy with this? They seriously need to watch the first two film breakdowns because they are the most recent games (Preseason 2023) to show what Trey Lance actually is right now. He's a mess who has no business in the NFL.

again, never said he hasn't had any good plays. I explicitly have said, that every QB has good plays...but its about consistency of those good plays.
he had 57% completion rate in 2021 and 47% in 2022. his QBR is 33 and 34 in those two years.

he has the arm. escapability. but he is got a ways to go to become more consistent.

Glad we can have a real discussion about Lance with no one having an agenda. You really have been doing your research. Lance has lots of work today to just become a backup quarterback. His throwing motion is bad like you said but most importantly he has no confidence. My hope is that Shanahan never really wanted the kid and he can take coaching from our coaches. We have a coach that helped with Caleb Williams last season at USC so he will have no excuses. This season just be our practice dummy quarterback for the scout team. That needs to be his job. Play well at that and the 4th round pick would be well worth the price.

Lance isn’t even the #2 QB, so thoughts of him getting significant play this season is silly. He’s also coming off an injury and surgery similar to Dak’s. It takes time. Judging him in his preseason action coming off that injury and rehab is a little unfair. When he was named as starter last season, he looked promising at times and made some impressive throws as his highlight video shows.

You might be referring to Dak here. I thought Dak did great being Star trek transported into starting QB.

However...let's take pause here...not every starting rookie QB gets a team like that (2016). Most high round, sought after pedigreed NCAA QB's go to a crappy team via first couple rounds given to the worst teams.

Would be great if this kid's reset produces our next starting QB!
It would only be great if he deserves it. I'd hate to see them try to force him to be a good QB and stubbornly leave him in.

He definitely still looks like a work in progress. But as long as the team is patient and feel they have the coaching in place to develop him, I’ll hope for the best.

I'm not disagreeing with you. You're absolutely right
