Here's one other area where I think the move is good. You're not getting Lance to compete with Dak. As Michael Irvin was saying on Undisputed (at least the parts that Mark Holmes was showing), this was about developing him and bringing him in as insurance. If he develops, he becomes a perfect insurance policy for Dak. When your starter goes down, you want a QB who is very similar to what your starter does best. It means the OC doesn't have to change the offense very much. I want Lance to develop. It helps Dak and the team. Obviously, we don't want injuries, but this is football. Injuries do happen. So, it's smart to have a QB that has a similar skillset to Dak. It means, if God forbid Dak has an injury, we can have a player who can do similar things to Dak. In other words, we bought an insurance policy (which is wise given our aging oline) for Dak with a 4th round pick with a lot of upside if he develops.
