Kirk Herbstreit made an interesting comment. He said 46 QBs have been selected in the first round since 2009 and only 16 became franchise QBs. Not very good odds, even in the first round.
This means nothing if the QBs taken in all of the other rounds had even less franchise QBs. And if they did (which is most likely), then it means it’s still more probable that a team will draft a franchise QB in the first round than in later rounds as it should be since that’s the point of valuing first round draft picks. If you could hit on franchise QBs just as much in the later rounds as in the first round then there would be no point in ranking players nor trading draft picks for so-called covered ones.

The NFL has 3-4 elite quarterbacks, if that. The rest are average or suck. It wasn't like that in the 90s, when there were many terrific quarterbacks in the league.

It's a problem.
It’s gotten much tougher to play QB in the NFL than during the 90s with all the passing and RBs being devalued. Look at Aikman’s numbers during the 90s. No QB could win with those numbers in today’s game. It’s all about the QB today.

Disagree. Quarterbacks were pinpoint accurate back then because they had to learn to be in college, which ran very similar offenses to the NFL. Now it's spread, which is very hard to defend in college just because there isn't enough defensive secondary talent to go around. Guys are running wide open in college now; they weren't back then. So quarterbacks today aren't asked to read defenses and throw into tight coverage much.

Aikman, Moon, Kelly, Young, Farve, Cunningham, Elway, Marino, Simms, Brunell, Warner, Manning, Kosar, Montana, Testeverde, Gannon.......they were everywhere.

Now, it's Mahomes and Burrow, maybe a couple more, and that's it.

We’ll just disagree. The game has changed and a lot more is put on the shoulders of QBs these days. Several average QBs won SBs years ago because they had great running games and defenses. You don’t see average QBs winning SBs now.

You think Aikman's low numbers mean it's harder to play QB today? LOL.

His low numbers mean he had the all-time leading rusher and a great defense. Everything revolved around Emmitt Smith. Aikman didn’t throw the ball near as much as our last two QBs. That’s not a knock on him. QB is harder to play today. It’s a passing league and no longer 4 yards and a cloud of dust.

QB is not harder to play today - rule changes on defense alone counter this incredibly stupid take. "It's a passing league" - Yeah, it's a passing league...because the rules favor passing. Why hand the ball off to a single RB 400 times a season when you can dink and dunk for 4-7 yards? Let's just go by the stats this season, in a relatively down year for QBs

There were 6 QBs with a rating over 100, there were 10 QBs with 530 or more passes with 65% completions or more. This is the easiest we have ever seen it for QBs. Not only do defenders have their hands tied in the secondary, now QBs are protected in the pocket more than they have ever been. What Dan Marino did in the 80s, Montana in 94, or the back to back to back MVP seasons that Brett Favre had were far far more impressive than what you are getting from Mahomes right now because the guys behind him aren't that far off from his greatness. Freakin' Lamar Jackson has two MVPs - Jackson would have been out of the league by now if this was 30 years ago.

The rules have changed so that passing is easy between the 20s. Teams basically are given 17 points before kickoff now.

It's now a massively inferior game played by illiterate drama queens. A good 90s team would walk through this league without breaking a sweat.

The thing is, Trey Lance is actually better than all those QB’s. He just doesn’t get a shot at trying to compete.

He started the 1st game throwing for a whopping 110 yards. In his 2nd game, he entered the game with 1:22 remaining in the 3rd quarter, he threw for 150 yards in the 4th quarter while mopping up against guys who were camp bodies. Six days later the 49ers robbed the Cowboys of a 4th rounder for him. He did not start 2 games..Purdy started PS games 2 and 3..Know your facts

To get an analysis of game 1 from JT O'Sullivan of the QB School watch

It's not pretty

Ahh, more scrambling after telling blatant falsehoods before.

Now your focus is on making excuses for your claim that he played horribly

But with this I have to ask how much more ridiculous can you get? First, he had 112 yards, not 110, and it was preseason, and 3 QB's played, which is common in preseason. Nobody is putting up huge passing numbers in that situation. He still led the team in passing in that game, and threw the only TD pass for the team.

In fact, Lance was the leading passer for the team in both his preseason games, one as a starter and one coming in late.

As for mopping up against guys that were camp bodies, again, that's an excuse for why he played well, not support for your claim he played horribly. Additionally, what you ignore is that he was also playing WITH guys that wouldn't survive final cuts, so don't act as if he was playing with a top squad against bottom guys.

Check out this tremendous touchdown throw by Lance

He was playing against camp bodies in the 2nd preseason game, but as you pointed out, he was also playing WITH the 49ers camp bodies...hmm
What does that tell you about what the 49ers thought of him ?..He is awful
