Trying Hard

Just very interested to hear how people view this phrase and how you value it in relation to this team.

From a simple definitional viewpoint, I think trying hard is for losers.

That is just my brutal way of looking at things.

It is very very easy to blame the players. They just are not good enough.

They are not executing. But they are "trying".

If a player "tries hard" doing everything they are coached to do, what then?

Is that a reflection that they are "trying hard" for themselves?

Doing the best they can in the system?

That has been the big rallying cry all season.

They are "trying".

I would love someone to tell me what exactly that means.

To me, I saw the defense "trying".

I saw an offense that was going through the motions of a moribund offense.

So what constitutes "trying" and how do you use that to decide how things are?

I guess you can characterize it as doing their best, but if missed tackles and dropped balls are their best then the Cowboys just aren't very good. The pass rush is a perfect example. Surely they're "trying." It's quite evident, but they don't get there fast enough. It's just the season from hell and I am numb at this point.

You can't really have it both ways though.

If you praise a team for trying hard, yet failing, the onus goes right back to those who put those gosh darn it dagnabbit players in those positions.

Like I said in the other thread, the players fight (try hard) for Garrett, but he puts them in a position that they are always fighting an uphill battle. And trying is not unique to Garrett or the Cowboys. All teams try. It's just a weak attempt at deflection.
