It's the 2nd best option amongst many bad options here.

1) Sign Fisher or someone like him is the preferable option
2) Start Smith
3) Start Ball

Ewww.

The only good option I see is getting Whitworth out of retirement. Giving up no assets to do so and understanding its a one year rental. He could get up to speed pretty quickly allowing Tyler to stay at G plus he could tutor him.
Any other outside acquisitions look to be iffy at best to me.

The team still hasn’t said he’s starting at LT. Just the media is saying he’s “expected” to start there. The tweet doesn’t say the team said that.

He still might stay at LG.

Maybe, but we also have yet to hear of any other good options as well. No news isn’t good news.

If this is true. Why didn't he play LT in the final preseason game?

That was OTAs

Yep, I believe the sequence of events did have Smth doing some LT stuff during OTAs. Then McCheese said at the podium during Training Camp that he thought he had him play too many snaps at LT during OTAs.

Because the original plan this year was for him to be LG replacing Connor Williams. He had a tweaked ankle for the 3rd preseason game.

His majority of snaps in pre season games, joint practices and training camp were at LG.

I understand but this isn’t an announcement that Smith has been named the starting LT… and people are taking it as if it is.

That’s all I’m saying. This confirms nothing that we didn’t know when we started the day.

What about shifting Zack Martin over to left tackle?

If they don’t sign a vet immediately, I think that’s far and away their best option.

Tyler Smith is being set up to fail here.

Not a good option for a few reasons:

1. You then mess with the right side continuity, which has been consistent all camp
2. Injury risk for Martin. Would make even a bigger problem.
3. Martin does not want to play tackle.

"is expected"

By whom? Sure, there are some people who expect, and some who expect something else.

Reporting on an expectation of unspecified people is not news.
What news do you have to dispute this report?

Have you been out practice. Who else are they putting at LT beside Tyler? This report certainly supports some of the comments we’ve heard from Stephen.

We know it’s not a done deal yet but until we hear those reports this is one which aligns.

Vea will be burying TB. Shortest path to the backfield ....

True, but at least there was a fighters chance with Zack on his right or Tyler to his left. Now he can just toss McGovern aside as well.

Not a good option for a few reasons:

1. You then mess with the right side continuity, which has been consistent all camp vs your quarterback’s blind side
2. Injury risk for Martin. Would make even a bigger problem. Do tell?
3. Martin does not want to play tackle. And the employee has final say?.

Please tell me there is an option 2a, 2b and 2c before we get to 3

Yeah but I see that as a complete non starter. They won't even consider it.

Well, maybe they will if Dak gets absolutely murdered in the first few games.

Jane Slater in the NFL Network just said that Stephen Jones said that Walentzko played well and said they are going to stay inside the building on the OL. They were more talking like it would be Walentzko or Ball and not moving Smith outside.

Brian Baldinger agreed that was the best way. He said you have to draft your guys, coach them up and let them play.

We still know nothing about what they’ll do.

Oh well that sounds better. Let's send out our 5th round rookie with a bum shoulder.

LOL.

Steele is already a question mark for me. You move Martin from his side it could be a disaster. Playing musical chairs with the OL is how you wreck the entire line. A far as injury; the movements are different playing of the left side & playing tackle. Martin got injured for like the first time in his career last time we made him move.

So….
If this works, MM or someone made the right decision.
If there are struggles, then Jerry and Stephen over stepped the coaches.
