Other species don't get vacations and security and can't ride to the Supermarket or McDonalds when hungry

We have more than enough leisure time

No one works before 18 or after 65 more or less and 40 hours a week still leaves 128 hours a week for rest and relaxation

Not so depressing imo

Also other species can spend far, far more time looking or hunting for food than what humans do.

We need to do something to prepare for a post labor society. Automation is going to replace jobs in mass and without a viable mechanism to deal with it they'll be societal change one way or the other.

Automation will push people into skilled positions. This is why I no longer push college degrees and more vocational education. Some areas do require college degrees (medical, etc) but most jobs require vocational skills.

The biggest problem I see in the future is the average intellect is 100. That isn't good enough. There will be a point where the average IQ won't be high enough to support them having a job because automation will be able to do the jobs of the unintelligent.

It's like Ray Crock said. Make the job so simple a monkey could be trained to do it. (talking about keeping cost down and error free at McDonald's) The problem is, technology will take us beyond level of skilled labor. You will just need people who have critical thinking skills, and I already know that 100 IQ does not fit that bill. You need at least 115 or better IMO. I prefer at least 120.

So the question is, what is half the population going to be doing in the future?

This is not like Blockbuster. Blockbuster is an example of bad management. That is not what we are talking about here. We are talking about replacing people and reducing them to menial subsistence.

If I'm not mistaken, this thread is about getting paid. It's not about liberal views. If we are talking about liberal views, I think you know where this thread is headed.

And quite frankly Blockbuster's business model was abruptly cut-off at the knees.

It happens.

Right here in my small city we had a manufacturer of wagons... Yeah, hook up the horse kinda wagons.

My gosh they were in business for several decades and suddenly their business model was being gutted.

Yes, but Blockbuster had a chance and they had the cash to change their fate. Instead, they let streaming services walk it and take their lunch money. It was just like Microsoft and the Internet. They literally owned the Desktop and other companies came in and stole their lunch because they didn't believe in the Internet. Internet Explorer was way late for the show. Imagine if they had started writing Explorer from the get go. (dear god what a scary thought!)

That's true--automation and tech will create some highly skilled jobs, but they will me more limited in number and become even more limited as technology improves (AI will take programmer jobs, etc.) Goods will become cheaper and easier to produce. Scarcity, the heart of capitalism, will decline. There needs to be a plan to shift our economic system to adapt to these changes.

Just about every big, dumb company has an opportunity to transition into the next technology... But the vast majority don't for one reason or another. There are literally thousands of the "Blockbuster" story to be found in other industries dating from 150 years ago forward.

Agreed. Berkshire Hathaway was one also, but they had two aces up their sleeve in Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger.

We need a robot to take over Garrett's job!

The tech is almost there

Socialism is never the answer to anything good.

And how.

It seems most socialist societies become some form of a dictatorship.

Maybe the bigger problem is that people are appointed to their positions based on a "loyalty" factor rather than merit or as the result of non-tampered with vote.

The result is a system chock-full of corruption and people in positions they are not qualified to be in.

I’m in favor of UBI. AI driven automation is going to put 30-60% of people out of work in the next decade or two. I see no real alternative.

UBI will simply water down the currency even further. Inflation will adjust to everyone having money in their pockets. The notion that we can all have money while producing nothing is economic fantasy. We may all have it, it just won't be worth much.

Industries exist now that didn't a generation ago. Others will follow as society adjusts.
