I was thinking about this myself...
It does sounds a little steep for a kicker, but I've not compared Kicker salaries across the league so I've kept my mouth shut.

5th highest paid kicker in the league sounds fine to me. One of the few that have earned an honest extension.

I like this signing...but, for sure Goodell will REALLY want to get rid of the extra point now!

And, I wonder what would take place if say, this coming season, the competition committee did eliminate the extra point. What happens to Bailey now? lol
Nothing would happen. He would do kickoffs and field goals. Extra points are only small part of the job description.

Anyone complaining about this extension is just looking for something to complain about. Bailey's one of the best in the league at his position and will be the 5th highest paid. Perfectly fair and reasonable.

And all this jibberish about letting him go and finding his replacement off the street or as a UDFA is ridiculous. If it was that easy to find a good kicker there wouldn't be any bad ones in the league. We'd be stupid to let him walk.

People who say we overpaid really have no idea what they're talking about. This was an excellent signing by the front office.

Not many kickers who are much better than Bailey in the league, if any. When you consider the escalation of contracts, you realize this isn't all that much.

3.3 million on average this year versus what will be the average going rate of probably 4 million or 4.5 million for a top kicker in years to come. As long as Bailey remains the clutch kicker that he is, we should have no problem getting our money's worth here.

Back in 2006 we signed Vanderjagt to a 3 year 6 million dollar deal, which was one of the top contracts at the time, that's only 2 million per year. Adam Vinatieri who was the top kicker at the time was making 2.4 million per year.

Putting a 2nd round tender on Bailey would have cost 2 million dollars, and wouldn't have had any long term stability at the position (i.e. you'd just have to pay him even more money in 2015).

Minimum base salary for a player in their 4th year is 730k, assuming he got a 3.5 million dollar signing bonus, spread that over the course of 5 years and his 2014 cap hit becomes 1.43 million. That means we saved about 600k by signing him long term, and don't have to deal with this for another 6 years.

Also you can backload a lot of that money, so this probably is more realistically a 4 or 5 year deal pending a future extension.

One of the most accurate kickers ever statistically, and ppl want to complain about Dallas making him the 5th highest paid kicker.. He's kicked several game winners 40+ yards out throughout his career. Best player overall on this team probably. Pay that man! Good for him

What makes this even dumber is the inflation rate of player compensation. Many of the kickers in the top 10-15 range are set to become free agents in the next 1-3 years. By 2017 Bailey will probably drop to the bottom of the top 10 in terms of compensation for kickers...

I don't know why you'd sign a kicker to a 7 year deal. I've seen too many good kickers just go sour.

Not a huge deal but I wouldn't have done it.

I don't know why you'd assume 7 years is really 7 years.

Guys he developed like Bear Pascoe have been going wild in this league.

And he's also produced a number of All Pros at TE that have singlehandedly help dismiss us from the playoffs.

I'm totally onboard with him.

I think he'll extend Witten's career another 2 years..

while getting Escobar and Hanna much more involved.

No one is saying Dan doesn't deserve the money, everyone is twisting this as if it is a bad deal given to Dan.
I am arguing that our team in 2014 do not need a 3 million kicker when we have to continue rebuilding OL and DL for next 3-4 years

Well, they'll tell you in a parity driven league a kicker can make a difference. Any given Sunday. Yada yada yada.

But I agree. I think this team is in need of a total rebuild AND a change at the top before they can truly compete to win a title. They also need to get the salary cap in order. So signing a kicker to a 7 year deal isn't really logical to me.

YOU have the Jerruh disease... Shiny toys... forget the details go with the splash...all flash and no substance....

That makes him only the 5th highest paid kicker by the way..

go ahead and find one off the street just as good...

meanwhile we lose games...

really brilliant

Who said "just as good"? I sure didn't.

Let me breakdown the average pay of kickers from 2014 and onward, and let you know when their contracts expire

Gostowski - 3.8 million, free agent in 2015
Bryant - 3.3125 million, free agent in 2015

Bironas - 2.875 million, free agent in 2015
Nugent - 1.9 million dollars, free agent in 2015

Scobee - 4.5125 million per year, free agent 2016
Prater - 3.9375 million per year, free agent in 2016
Crosby - 3.475 million per year, free agent in 2016

Barth - 2.65 million per year, free agent in 2016

Succop - 3.15875 million, free agent in 2017
Novak - 1.825 million dollars, free agent in 2017

janikowski - 3.76 million per year, free agent 2018

Current Free Agents

Adam Vinatieri previous contract 3 years, 9.2 million i.e. 3 million per year

Robbie Gold previous contract 6 years 15 million i.e. 2.5 million per year

Phil Dawson previous contract 1 year 2.35 million dollars

This doesn't include any other players who are on the rookie contracts like Bailey who might be in for a pay day.

Nothing stopping us from releasing him if he goes sour... He is 25 years old, signing him until he is 32 gives us a huge future discount...

Because the deal allows for team flexibility, if the market for some reason were to increase you've got him for a cheap contract and if not you can always cut him with minimal cap consequences.

That is a pretty good FA signing by our GM. And a good job by the coaches getting him ready. Yeah, it is a little more than we all would have liked to pay a kicker but the contract seems to reflect today's market value. And Bailey performed and he earned this contract. I have no problem paying payers who perform.

Yeah but those minimal cap consequences add up. I understand what you're saying and on a different team that is a legitimate contender with a sound salary cap situation this might make sense but not for the Cowboys, IMO.
