Not a huge fan of Vaughan, but if you think he's got potential to eventually be a starter, it's well worth a spot on the 53. I know we get attached to guys in camp, but bottom roster guys very rarely contribute anything of note to a team. If you can get productive QB snaps out of that slot, it's a no-brainer.

so if Romo goes down, is Randy Quaid going to be screaming from the front row "Hey Garrett, you're Old Mother Hubbard and only Vaughan's in the cupboard!"

If Romo does get hurt and miss time, my question is if Weeden cant play very good would Garrett and Jerry try to bring in a vet qb to try and win games or do you put a guy like Vaughn out there to see if he can show you anything worth keeping and know you going to pick high in draft next year? If Vaughn was to ball out you could go defense line but if he folds then you know you may be shopping for the next qb right?

You obviously don't understand how the practice squad works.

To sign a player to the PS, he has to be placed on waivers. If he clears waivers without being claimed by another team, then you may sign him to the practice squad. At any time during the season, another team can claim him off of your PS - and he's gone. Keeping him on the 53 was the only way to ensure Vaughan stayed in Dallas.

Try to see this one more time. If Romo gets hurt, Dallas will go out and sign a veteran QB - not to start, but to back up Weeden. Jimmy Johnson did the same thing in 1993, signing Bernie Kosar off the street to take over when Troy Aikman was injured, rather than elevating Jason Garrett - who wasn't ready (neither would Vaughan be this year). Kosar had a week to learn Dallas' offense, by the way.

Weeden is the back up, and will be all season. Vaughan will not see any live action this season unless Romo and Weden are injured in the same game. Vaughan has a huge upside, but he's going to take time to develop.

I know how the PS works but it looks like you haven't followed how this team has operated past few season. This team hasn't carried a 3rd QB past two seasons when Orton was the backup. And Vaughan does not have "huge" upside. In fact, he didn't play that well against Miami. Unless your his mom, there is no one who saw him play against Miami that will say he has "huge" upside. He did show some flashes and I think he can be developed and I think he showed enough that the team thinks he can possibility replace Weeden this season. I think that is why they are putting him on the 53.

I get the scared of Romo's back thing. And I do think Vaughan has skills to work with. I just do not trust this organization's decision making process.

No, really? so unusual for you to bash Jerry and co. on here. :)

What do you mean, how this team has operated the last few seasons? I've watched how this team operated since the early 1960's, and can tell you the philosophical differences betwen the Murchison, Bright, and Jones ownership eras. Stephen McGee ring a bell? The Cowboys saw him as a QB who could be developed - as they see Vaughan - and he rode the pine. He didn't see a regular season snap until the end of his 2nd season (2010). A few years prior to McGee the team signed a free agent named Tony Romo, and followed the same model. Once again, how many years did Romo sit before seeing any regular season action?

Do you know what "upside" means? We're talking long-term potiential, not "later on this season" potential. And what's more laughable is thinking a club thinks any player can be "developed" in half a season. When they talk about developing a player they are talking years down the road - not later in the season.

Vaughan played very well against San Diego, and pretty good against Baltimore, but poorly against Miami and Denver, but you're basing your evaluation on what you've seen in a very short amount of football. I'm sure the coaching staff is considering countless hours during OTAs, mini-camp, and training camp, in addition to what he did in preseason games. And yes, he does have tremendous upside. Prototypical build, an NFL-caliber arm, can make all the throws, and is smart to boot. The Cowboys' plan for him won't manifest itself for 2-3 years. They see him athe possible heir apparent for Romo, and not as a a potential backup for this season.

Do you even know when Steven McGee last played for us? 2011. Do you know the first year Kyle Orton was our backup QB? 2012. So you are actually making my point about us not carrying a 3rd QB when having a very capable backup.

You seem to think Vaughan is the next Aikman but the fact is he is a UDFA from a small school that has the physical tools that lack big competition experience. Can he become our next starting QB after Romo's done? Yes that's certainly possible. In fact I think with experience, he has potential to unseat Weeden as 2nd QB this year.

So I'm not sure why you are arguing with what I said. You seem to think he is great yet don't think he can replace Weeden or any other vet QB this year. That makes absolutely no sense. If he is great as you think he is, why can't he become better than Weeden during this season? I think this is why he is being kept on the 53. Weeden hasn't shown anything where the team feels 100% confident and they think Vaughn has potential to be better than him given some experience this year.

He's a scrub. His ceiling is Stephen McGee.

Should have drafted Jimmy Garoppolo.
