So figuring out Garrett means Romo injuring his thumb and getting Owens injured? Both happened and Dallas was doing just fine against Carolina on offense until Owens got hurt. And for NYG figuring out Garrett, they had a funny way of showing it as Dallas had 7 more first downs, 106 more total yards (which included 64 more rushing yards) and had the ball for 13 minutes longer.
Four. Straight. Drives. No. Points.

Where the G-Men made up for it was in field position. Both of Dallas' TD drives combined for 29 plays and 191 yards. That's not to mention the 2 drops (Fasano and Crayton).

I really believe the Eagles are taking too much stock into their win. Garrett and the offense had an off day, helped by an injury to Romo. Instead they got housed by the Dallas offense at Philly in *week 9*. What, did Jerry steal Philly's tape of the Dallas offense?

YAKUZA
Our last two drives...you know...the drives where we didn't score points...started on the Dallas 44 and the Giants 48. Screw field position. We couldn't score.

I just look at Romo, TO, and Witten, and think a monkey could have coached that offense. Then look at a hobbled Newman, Henry, and Reeves and Jones, and think ... wow, he actually coached the hell out of that defense.

For the year, he did a great job. But had the offense not scored points, teams would have taken the shooting fish in a barrel approach and attacked Reeves and Williams more than they did. In a way, that game was a nice summation of the whole season. The defense was good, but flawed fundamentally because of certain components, namely Reeves and to a lesser extent Williams. Our secondary happy approach in the draft points to that concern.

In terms of the playoff game, nobody was hobbled when we allowed Manning to march down the field with all the momentum.

I didn't even mention the fact that we abandoned what worked defensively in the second Giants game. We pressured Manning more and even featured Ware, Ellis and Spencer often. I believe on of the DMN bloggers pointed that out.

Yes, if the offense had sucked, we wouldn't have been very good. The question is, which side of the ball benefited more from coaching. You look at the offense and you think that offense is going to produce no matter who is the coach. You look at a secondary -- Henry, Reeves, Jones, Hamlin, and Roy at some points -- and you just pray and hold your breath. Yet Wade worked wonders. As Vela points out, this will be one of the first times Wade has had a strong secondary. Should be interesting to watch.

Yes, good to see a lovefest for good ol' Wade.

On the other hand I beleive that if it came down to Jason or Wade, fans would choose Jason in a landslide.
Jerra is getting impatient. If Wade does not get deep into the playoffs, his job is open next spring.

Indeed they probably would. But does that speak well of Jason or Wade?

The defense was more of a smoke and mirrors act, if that is what you are alluding to, simply because of injuries.

But it isn't like Phillips took a completely talentless group to higher levels. He simply tweaked it a bit. I expect the defense to really shine this season. If not, there is no excuse. He'd have an even greater embarassment of riches at his disposal than Garrett.

If we released both from their obligations and everything were equal, which person do you think gets scooped up by another team to be their head coach first?

There is your answer.

We don't know what Garrett can do as a head coach. On the other hand, I think Phillips' track record in that regard speaks for itself, as in close but no cigar.

Smoke and mirrors or good coaching. Whatever.

He took an injured defense and made it outperform. He made Greg Ellis his best ever, when many thought he was done for. Jacques Reeves owes him half his contract.

To be perfectly honest, I think most NFL general managers are genuinely stupid. Listen to Floyd Reese and Charlie Casserly on television. These men were paid millions of dollars in the NFL. It's amazing.

More than it would speak about Jason would be what it would speak about the future of the Dallas Cowboys.

Few see Wade as a long-term presence in Dallas. The gig is way too glamorous for a Wade persona.

Too, IMHO, Wade had bad timing with the Cowboys. He came in as Mr Mellow, to a team loaded with talent And the ascendant shadow of Jason Garrett. And pressure to win in the playoffs.

The early exit from the playoffs, a bitter pill, will produce lots of pressure for wade to win big this year. If not, make room for the young, red-haired genius kid.

In a fair world, Wade would be given 4 years to win the Super Bowl.
But only in a fair world.

That might be true, but Wade Phillips hardly strikes me as a great head coach who just slipped through the cracks beacuse of GM incompetence.

He is a step above the likes of Dick Jauron, but he's not a Tony Dungy if you are looking at the defensive minded head coach mold.

Wade sounds like a bumbling idiot. He doesn't seem inspiring and comes off as a bit lazy.

I think it's easy to see why someone would be attracted to Bill Parcells rather than Wade Phillips. Yet I'd take Wade over Parcells any day as a coach. I'd also take him over Dungy in a heart beat.

My only problems with Wade is he came in with an attack, go get em reputation. When the games got to be real meaningful he was total opposite. Letting the Giants walk right down the field before halftime comes to mind. This is my biggest problem with him. You cant consistently play your corners 12 yards off the reciever and expect them to cover. I dont know what game it was (im thinking Det or Wash) but Henry was playing so far off the reciever and did everything in his power to stop the pass but was late, he turned around and flipped at the sideline because of it. We did it the whole year. Teams werent patient enough to stick with it. Miami in week 2 is an example of this. That game was alot closer than the score indicated. In the first half, the fish were moving the ball on 7-8 yard outs and slants because we were playing 12 yards off. In the second half they decided to want to go deep and it was the wrong move. No matter what Chambers had 9 catches, Booker had 7 and someone else had 5(Hagens maybe). That right there tells you about our db placement.

Then you apparently enjoy losing a playoff game and your coach telling you it is okay.

I can understand the disappointment with this with all the hype going into the season. But from what I've read and seen Wade has always been a "bend but dont' break" secondary with a pressure front 7. He wants to challenge the opposing QB to beat his blitz in little spurts all the way down the field. He won't give up big plays and if you try for one the pressure will get to you.

That style of play can sometimes be incredibly frustrating for a fan to watch. Giving up the dink and dunk off the cushions is tough to watch. But it's extremely effective, particularly when you're confident in your offense.

What's Dungy done other than having Manning? Coach some mediocre defenses?

Talk about a defensive coach with some poor offenses. In his last 3 playoff games at Tampa, his offense scored a total of 18 points.
