Yesterday, during the media hour at Valley Ranch, Brandon Weeden made the comment:

(paraphrasing) "I'm going to be auditioning for 32 teams out there. I hope to be back here, I love it here, but I know that's the reality of this business."

This is an extremely odd time to make a statement like that. That's a PRESEASON comment that you hear from bubble guys and undrafted rookies, not regular season backup quarterbacks starting games in September.

Weeden is the designated starting quarterback on a 2-0 team with Super Bowl aspirations heading into an eight-week stretch without Tony Romo. He's the guy. He has a great opportunity to contribute to the Cowboys, and his mind is on putting up some good tape for other clubs to see?

When I heard that, I was really glad they went out and signed Matt Cassel. That quote was just strange.

Didn't bother me. He just said the same thing every backup QB is thinking.

But he isn't trying to make a team. He's on a team. And he's got eight weeks to "Steve Beuerlein" his way into Cowboys lore. THAT should be what he's thinking.

He basically said, "I hope I don't suck too bad that I can't get another job somewhere next year."

He probably said it because they signed Cassel.

Full quote

Weeden said he’s not looking for his shoulder and actually understands the Cowboys’ decision to add a veteran behind him.
“That’s just the nature of this business,” The quarterback positon is so important that you have to have guys in place if something were to happen. I’m not worried about. He’s been around this league a long time. He’s been around Brady. He’s been around good quarterbacks. He’ll have a lot of positive information for us. He’s a pro. He’s been doing this a long time. I’m excited to have him. I’m not putting any extra pressure on myself.”

While he understands the level of concern around the Cowboys’ losing Tony Romo for what will be at least eight weeks with a broken collarbone, Weeden admitted he has to be excited about his opportunity, especially because he knows this is the kind of chance that could land him another contract next year as he is expected to be a free agent.

“I mean, it’s a big year,” Weeden said. “I’m not trying to sugarcoat that. I’ve got to go play well. I want to keep continuing to play in this league and in order to do that you’ve got to play well. I’m auditioning essentially for 32 teams next year but hopefully I can come back here. I love it here.”

Not necessarily.

He’s a first round draft pick who I’m sure still thinks he could be a starter somewhere else.

He’s currently paid less than Cassel who (for the time being at least) is his backup.

Maybe it’s a sign of confidence.

Anyone think Weeden is the heir apparent in Dallas? He knows he isn't either.....

Why he is a FA after this season. Pretty much he is auditioning for 32 teams 1 of them being the Cowboys whom he said he loved being here but there are no guarantees. All he can do is go out and perform well so that there will be interest in him after this season. if he fails it may be hard to find a spot in the NFL next season

Well good. And here I thought he was being complacent and content that he just wants to be a backup. I want my backups to want to be starters and want more!

That's fine to think, but you don't say that. He should be talking about the here and now. It shouldn't be about a big contract and starting position for another team next year, at least not as a public statement.

I've literally never heard a player say something like that in September when he's basically been handed the offense for two months.

He's just saying, that if he goes out here and plays well the next 9-10 games, then he won't be a backup next year. He'll be starting on some team next year. With Romo's contract, the Cowboys probably couldn't afford to franchise him, and he'd be a FA. While it's true, maybe he shouldn't have said it out loud. Guess he's been hanging around JR too long. ;-)

So it's not about winning these games, it's about looking good enough for the other teams to sign you next offseason?
