IMO, the only way any other teams will want to sign him is if he does well and helps the Cowboys to some wins before Romo (and Dez) get back.

If Weeden plays pretty well and Dallas wins several games with him, he will sure enough be taking some calls in free agency.

Exactly............I got no idea why some folks have their panties in a bunch over what he said.

Weeden knows that if he goes out there and craps the bed, his career is probably done in the NFL. If Weeden plays well however, the chances are pretty good that Dallas wins enough games to stay in contention until Romo comes back. So Weeden playing well and Dallas winning games go hand in hand, the odds of Dallas losing if Weeden post a 110 rating like somebody said is pretty slim.

Bottom line is that we will win games by Weeden playing well so whatever it takes to motivate Weeden to play well (free agent contract) benefits us just as much.

Yesterday, during the media hour at Valley Ranch, Brandon Weeden made the comment:

(paraphrasing) "I'm going to be auditioning for 32 teams out there. I hope to be back here, I love it here, but I know that's the reality of this business."

This is an extremely odd time to make a statement like that. That's a PRESEASON comment that you hear from bubble guys and undrafted rookies, not regular season backup quarterbacks starting games in September.

Weeden is the designated starting quarterback on a 2-0 team with Super Bowl aspirations heading into an eight-week stretch without Tony Romo. He's the guy. He has a great opportunity to contribute to the Cowboys, and his mind is on putting up some good tape for other clubs to see?

When I heard that, I was really glad they went out and signed Matt Cassel. That quote was just strange.

Whatever it takes to motivate him I don't care...he's not a long term solution.

A comment like that isn't a sign of confidence it's a sign that he's looking over his shoulder knowing if he doesn't play well Cassel will be in there and he could be looking for work at the end of this season. The Cowboys didn't sign Cassel off the street like they did Weeden they traded for him that sends a message to Weeden that the team may not have a lot of confidence in him. If the Cowboys felt real good about Weeden holding things down until Romo returns they could have signed Flynn or Ponder and not forfeited a draft pick.

It’s not just about Weeden holding the fort until Romo gets back, it’s also about what happens if Weeden too get injured.

Obviously Flynn and Ponder didn’t inspire enough confidence in their ability to learn and execute the offense so they went with someone whom they thought could, just like when they traded for Brice Butler last week after bringing those other WRs for a try-out.

That's the main reason they traded for Cassel insurance incase Weeden is injured but they also wouldn't hesitate using him once he gets up to speed with the offense if Weeden were to play poorly. We're probably stuck with Weeden the next 3 games regardless how he plays because Cassel may not know the offense well enough.

Fine.

But you have to be a twice-baked moron to say, in front of cameras, that this is a chance to get a job next year. Thinking that privately is fine, but to say so to the Cowboys fan base is why Brandon Weeden is only Brandon Weeden.

It reminds me of Joe Namath telling Suzy Kolber he wanted to kiss her on national TV. Sometimes it's best to keep your self-serving thoughts to yourself.

Sorry but what Joe said was offensive to Kolber what Weeden is saying only effects him. I don't think he was a moron for saying it at all.

I don't believe Weeden is a long term solution, obviously, but stuff like this is why I have a hard time with internet posters mocking NFL players they way they do. Bum, slop, moron, whatever. Just the ante to make an NFL roster at QB is so high that even a backup long-shot can do stuff like this with regularity. That means these guys routinely do things at their profession that are so far above anything I'm capable of doing at my own job that it's not even funny.

At some level, you just have to respect the ability and understand that most of these guys fail because what they're trying to do is very, very difficult to do well. There's just something pathetic about no-talent out of shape losers on the internet making fun of the attempt.

No offense to those of you in-shape no talent losers out there, CZ. You know I love you all. Not really.

Backup QBs are never long-term solutions unless it's a young QB you brought in or drafted it's year to year with most of them especially those over 30. Many still have starting aspirations while others are content carrying a clipboard and holding down an NFL job for as long as they can.

He spoke the truth. What's wrong with that? He makes $100,000 this year and would like that to increase. In a QB starved league, he has a chance to catch on somewhere for some decent money.

He is auditioning for a job for next year. There's no guarantee that he'll be brought back next year. He also knows that poor showings against Atlanta and/or NO ... and he's back on the bench, with his NFL career just about done.

Yeah he will be sitting next to Babe Laufenberg if he does not produce.

Affects only him? It's not about him, or it shouldn't be in the media.

Translation: "Yes, winning would be cool and all, but the opportunity here is for me is to have an extended audition for other teams so I can get a bigger contract this offseason. That's what I'm hoping to do here."

That is your own translation. he said he loves it in Dallas and would like to be back in Dallas as well. But reality is he has to go out and produce and help this team win games and that is what I expect him to do. And yes he knows this chance could be his last, him saying it takes away from nothing.

Weeden will be gone next year. I want him to do well but he doesn't pass the eye test ( for me anyways). With that being said, hope he can " bus drive" us to 3-4 wins!

So it's not about winning these games, it's about looking good enough for the other teams to sign you next offseason?

if he goes through this stretch and looks good.......good enough that he lands on the radar of other teams for next year, then it probably means that they ARE winning games in this stretch without Romo.
