Yesterday, during the media hour at Valley Ranch, Brandon Weeden made the comment:

(paraphrasing) "I'm going to be auditioning for 32 teams out there. I hope to be back here, I love it here, but I know that's the reality of this business."

This is an extremely odd time to make a statement like that. That's a PRESEASON comment that you hear from bubble guys and undrafted rookies, not regular season backup quarterbacks starting games in September.

Weeden is the designated starting quarterback on a 2-0 team with Super Bowl aspirations heading into an eight-week stretch without Tony Romo. He's the guy. He has a great opportunity to contribute to the Cowboys, and his mind is on putting up some good tape for other clubs to see?

When I heard that, I was really glad they went out and signed Matt Cassel. That quote was just strange.

He's on the final year of a two-year deal. I have no problem with him stating the "reality" of his situation.

If Weeden does well, he gets a chance to be signed as a starter. If he does poorly, he's probably looking at a backup gig at best for the rest of his career.

He's just saying, that if he goes out here and plays well the next 9-10 games, then he won't be a backup next year. He'll be starting on some team next year.

You could look at it that way but it could also be looked at as him saying with the team trading for Cassel I could be a backup somewhere else next season. Cassel has 32 wins as a starting QB compared to 5 wins for Weeden so he has to feel somewhat threatened looking over his shoulder at Cassel.

Thanks for adding context. I have no problem with what he said, after reading the full exchange of words.

Yep..............I completely dislike half-truths.

I thought the Zone frowned on that?

I would have to hear the full quote and the question that preceded it.

The question could have been, "With Romo the designated leader of this team, do you expect to be a starting quarterback somewhere if you do well during this stretch of Romo's absence?"

A comment like that isn't a sign of confidence it's a sign that he's looking over his shoulder knowing if he doesn't play well Cassel will be in there and he could be looking for work at the end of this season. The Cowboys didn't sign Cassel off the street like they did Weeden they traded for him that sends a message to Weeden that the team may not have a lot of confidence in him. If the Cowboys felt real good about Weeden holding things down until Romo returns they could have signed Flynn or Ponder and not forfeited a draft pick.

That was weird, too.

I don't think I've ever seen a QB not warm up before going into a game. He just sat there like he needed Garrett to go over and call on him.

"Oh, me? I get to play? Awesome, coach!"

He didn't warm up or you didn't see him warm up? Why do people think if it's not happening when the camera is on you then it didn't happen.

His arm seems ok to me from what I saw.

I like what he said, we just need him to perform like a person who wants a starting job.

He was on the bench and the guy sitting next to him with the tablet was Scott Linehan who was going over things with Weeden. I highly doubt Weeden is going to walk away from Linehan as he is going over some plays.

Weeden is likely saying whatever he feels it takes to please those of the ownership, the staff and the fans, although in his mind, I'm sure he feels the handwriting is on the wall. Consider that the team has signed two people behind him, knowing that his past performances have been highly questionable, to say the least. I think surely he's been around long enough to know when he's on a short leash and when he's not.

I really don't think it would take long at all for Moore to replace him if he disappoints the team in the next game or two. This situation requires results that must come expediently.

In the meantime, Cassel will certainly be getting acclimated to replace Moore if he should fail as well. It seems clear to me that the FO is simply maximizing their chances of having success during the time that Romo is healing and rehabbing himself. Despite what Jerry has been crowing about Weeden, I believe the FO and staff both fully realize his position is quite tenuous at best.

I know. He wasn't warming up when the camera panned to him. Was he already warm? Probably was.

I don't know but as you said his arm looked fine to me. issue with Weeden is not the arm, it is the decision making if being in this offense for a 2nd season can help that part of his game then he has a chance to go out and play well. Guy has a very good arm

So it's not about winning these games, it's about looking good enough for the other teams to sign you next offseason?

IMO, the only way any other teams will want to sign him is if he does well and helps the Cowboys to some wins before Romo (and Dez) get back.

If Weeden plays pretty well and Dallas wins several games with him, he will sure enough be taking some calls in free agency.

Not a bad effort overall though. Just a little more work and you will have it down completely.

You just can't compare yourself to a professional (Gimme) and hope to measure up.

Sweet. The great thing about that is that clay pigeons are way cheaper than WR's these days.

Weeden came into the league at 29. Technically he's still young to be a qb coming into the nfl. His statement doesn't bother me at all. If he does great teams will be lining up for him. So this is his make or break chance
