Video: Mayock's Top Five - CB/Safety

I'm not sure "hysteria" is accurate. People have concerns, as they should. He'll test really well, we know that. But his play on the field doesnt match his athletic ability and never has at USC. Jimmy Johnson said several times if the guy doesnt make any plays in college, he isnt likely to start making them in the pros.
You do realize that a post above proves my point?

cAn someone please post mayocks top 5 safeties. I can't view the vid on my phone. TIA.

The anti-Taylor Mays stuff is a bit over the top and being fueled by the "he's a Roy Williams clone" hysteria.

It may be a bit over the top, but I do believe there's plenty of room for concern when there's talk about which position he'll play at the next level.

The way I see it, I wouldn't go near him w/ our first pick. However, if his tweener label causes him to slip to our second pick, he may be a good value pick (even though I still wouldn't want him just because I don't think he's what we need right now).

Mays is not the type of safety we need.
This guy is more like the Roy Williams/Tony Dixon type of safety that we found out couldn't cut it in coverage in the NFL.
We need a safety who has good ball skills and good range.
The last thing we need is another big safety who can't change direction.
We need a ballhawk safety who can cover.
Earl Thomas is a guy who would be a good fit in my opinion.

Nate Allen is a guy to watch (6'2" 190lbs). He has good size and playmaking ability. One thing the cowboys scouts look for are players who are "gapping up" in production coming out of college. Allen had career numbers his senior year: 85 tackles, 4 interceptions (one returned for TD) and fumble recovery.

Also for Poster who cant get video:

1) Eric Berry (TENN)
2) Earl Thomas (TX)
3) Taylor Mays (USC)
4) Chad Jones (LSU)
5) Nate Allen (South FLorida)

Taylor Mays is the exact type of safety you should stay away from.

Who cares if he is a big hitter? The NFL rules dont allow it anymore anyways.

The league just isn't built for guys like him anymore.

So stay away from Taylor Mays. Especially for this team.

If we played in a city that had bad weather conditions all the time then maybe but on our fast track? No thanks.

I also like how Mayock is just wanting to say Earl Thomas is the best safety when I called this way back in October before he was on anyones radar.

He isn't a good fit for the need we have though. You can't argue that I don't think.

At the Combines he will bench 225 at least 20 times. He's going to register a vertical leap over 36 inches and will run a sub 4.5 40 despite being 225 pounds.

by all means, lets draft a workout wonder over a football player.

eric berry is far and away the best safety prospect in years

You better believe he is just that.

Does Mike Mayock realize Eric Berry hits like Ronnie Lott and runs and covers like a CB. Berry will hurt you. Berry can line up at CB and cover you, and that includes the slot. He's a little stiff, but he can cover you out there. He's a sure tackler. The guy is a turn-over machine. Monty Kiffen didn't get the production, in terms of turnovers, that John Chavis got out of him.

If he stays healthy, he's a Hall of Fame player.

Berry will be the highest player taken since Peyton Manning out of Tennessee.

The guy from Nebraska and Berry are the two safest players in this entire draft, imo.

I'll flat out say it. I think Berry is the best player in this draft.

Having said that, he's way out of reach, and that guy from Texas looks good to me, but putting him ahead of Berry...

I'll take Berry and let's go...

Taylor Mays = a worse covering Roy Williams, if you can fathom that.

Just my guess. Myron Rolle of Florida State, and represented by Leigh Steinberg, will be a Dallas Cowboy in Round 2 or 3.

Are you really deciding DC? wow...

If he was there in the 3rd then okay. But he does not play like a first or second rounder.

He might be really good. He might really suck and get burned like he does in college. Those polar opposites are not worth a premium draft pick.

I don't watch a lot of college football myself.

One thing that I'll comment on is that over the last few years it seems as though there have been a fair number of duds at safety that have been drafted. Part of the problem is that it is an instinctual and intellectual position. You have to be physical enough to tackle 240 lb RBs and have enough coverage skills to stay with a WR down the field.

I would say that even though it is now a passing league a safety still needs to be physical but not necessarily a big hitter. All the spread offenses have put a premium on coverage and none of our safeties other than Ball aren't very good at it.

If there isn't good value at the end of round one, safety would have to be a serious consideration given our needs and the depth of the position in this draft.

He is good but he can't touch Earl Thomas's coverage skills.

Nobody has that range at the safety position.

My worry about Thomas is his ability to stop the run and I think he may struggle more out of the gate because of his youth.

But IMO he Thomas still holds the most upside and will be a turnover machine.

I'm not a Mays fan at all, but just for sake of argument.........

Jay Ratliff made no plays in college in my book.

Take that Jimmy.

I think Myron Rolle has the highest ceiling. His showing at the Senior Bowl was apparently really good.

wow..Im a huge Earl Thomas fan..but wow.

Eric Berry blows Earl out of the water. There's a reason why he'll be pick in the top 5 as a safety..

If he goes top 5 and he isn't Ed Reed in a few years then someone reached.

Safeties should never go that high and Eric Berry doesn't look like a slam dunk superstar to me.
