PS, I love the idea of documenting "competence".

I'm just saying that if he was told to do something or have it done in a particular way, that he had complied with instructions given and if anything disparaging about the project comes back, he has documentation to prove that he was following the directive provided.

There's no need to be intentionally obtuse. You know exactly what I'm saying. :p:

What does she look like?

Not sure what it has to do with it, but she is middle-aged and full-figured. I was told she is under a great deal of stress with a sick husband at home. She is also serving on a committee for one of our clients and I think wants to make a name for herself being a new manager. She is unorganized and contradicts herself. She will act as if her employees are in the wrong and send nasty e-mails chewing people out. The worst kind of boss! I can handle her, it's just very annoying and shouldn't have to be this way in the workplace. And, to make matters worse, I know she doesn't know what she's talking about on some issues. She doesn't want to be questioned. She just wants people to do as they are told without discussion. I'm going to start documenting "Completed as instructed by XXXX" with the date and my intials.

If she's hot I think it does make a difference.

Ok. Well I have read that people that are good-looking are known to get more job offers! Not fair, but stats prove it to be true. I guess maybe if men are hiring? All of my bosses above her are all women, so it probably doesn't hold true in this case.

1. Agree with doing as much communication as possible via e-mail. Save everything.

2. Attach read receipts to all of your emails.

3. Look for another job.

For what reason? This is a growing problem, I think, with the United States (though it's admittedly been a problem for some time). Potentially lose your job because the company isn't doing well? Get ready to SUE! SUE! SUE! Too much sense of entitlement.

I think you completely missed the mark in this thread.

If she's as bad as you say she is, the best thing you can do is step back and let her hang herself. Do your job to the best of your ability and let her foolishness be her own problem. If you or anyone deicide to fight her, it could only serve as a distraction from the fact that she's incompetent. Don't kill yourself with worry over it, it's a moment in a life that will pass and before long, she'll probably be gone any way.

My gut feeling tells me that you are right. I always remain professional even though I may be cussing her under my breath. :D

PS, I love the idea of documenting "competence".

Your supervisor is not entitled to fire you for no reason...particularly if they do not own the company.

I'll give an example. Had one boss that tried to pass the blame onto me. Essentially, I had a project I had to complete for a salesperson in Chicago (I was in Atlanta).

Problem was, we could not complete the project until the salersperson faxed me over some legal documents. From day 1, I e-maile and called the salesperson these documents. Never got them. Called AND e-mailed this salesperson EVERY day. I would get 'yeah, I'll get them to you soon' or some hemming and hawing or no answer to my message.

About a week in, I told my supervisor of the problem. She agreed. All correspondence was done via e-mail. For about 4 weeks straight, I would update here about 3 times a week.

Eventually, my supervisor told me to close down the project because there was no way I could complete it since it was a 1 month project and we had 3 days to do it and I had not received the documents despite incessantly calling and e-mailing the salesperson.

Everything was A-OK, until the VP of Sales & Marketing found out and my supervisor of course, passed the blame onto me. The salesperson did as well because the VP never did anything to salespeople (in fact, he was later fired for his lax management of the salespeople).

The point is this...the company deserves to know the truth and deserves to know who was incompetent. They not only have other employees who need to be able to do their job, but they also have shareholders to answer to and I would think that if the boss is running off good, competent employees while being incompetent herself...I think they would want to know that to help the company best operate.

And while you can say 'you're not entitled to a job', it doesn't mean that a person's job is extremely important to them and as far as I'm concerned...they should do what they have to do to keep their job.

Actually, in most cases, they are. Just like, as an employee, you're entitled to quit for no reason.

You document because there are these crazy things called labor laws, and if an employer breaks them and fires you or you get sexually harassed or treated poorly because of your race or another protected attribute, then they deserve all the punishment they're going to get. It's not a particularly complicated idea.

Maybe try preemptive strike in HR so when the manager takes you to task the problem was already reported: also coworkers in same position if any.

Documentation, especially of competence, is important in many lines of work, in particular those who work in health care. If you do not you open yourself up to litigation and ethical/legal issues

Guess which one of us has actually worked on labor law cases before? I'll give you a hint, it's not you.

It doesn't hurt to keep copies of CYA material.

However, if my job situation is poor, then my next move is to change my situation before it's changed for me. I've got a good job now, but if I felt threatened, I'd make a change. Better to be proactive than reactive.
