From Steve: What was your most recent time in the 40?
Antwaan Randle El: I ran a 4.5 flat... I ran a 4.46 before... it fluctuates. I'm more quicker than I am fast.
That is a very likely situation. Send him to Miami. Maybe BP can use him.Big Dakota;1859996 said:If Carp doesn't step up and just disappears in camp and PS again, he won't have a whole lot of trade value IMHO.

I think he expected Bobby to overtake Bradie going into this preseason like many of us did. But Bradie lost the weight and played extremely well -- the best football of his career. And Bobby just couldn't justify taking his spot, especially playing poorly as he did. But I think Bobby's going to make a real go at Ayodele's spot next season. Why hasn't Bobby Carpenter contributed more?
Oh, cause of us maybe. We've made those decisions and that's what we've gone with. And I've told them all -- you don't -- coaches don't always make all the right decisions. And I think Bobby will say this -- the last preseason game we gave him a big opportunity and he didn't play well. And maybe we looked at that too hard. Because he's practiced hard. He's done all the right things in practice. Good guy. And he's a good athlete. So, Bradie James certainly came through -- was part of it too. Bradie showed -- to me I didn't have that feeling going in -- but I did after a certain time that Bradie was a really good football player and needed to be on the field for us at that position during 1st and 2nd downs for sure. That kind of inhibited what we were going to do with Bobby. He'll get some playing time this week. He'll get an opportunity to show us again what he can do.
yeah, i remember that bears game he allowed rex grossman to run for a critical first down. he looked really slow to react in that game.rojan;1859977 said:Wasn't he on the nickel defense until after the Bears game?
I don't think Wade is telling the whole truth.

As for not working him in defensive packages, the additional packages we've added throughout the season have been more pass-oriented, removing linebackers from the field, not adding them. So there's really not been anything added where Bobby could have possibly contributed, even if he was playing lights out.

Hostile understood this and made a comment about liking old, slow people (perhaps taking a slight jab at eduncan by referring to Henry.....or referring to himself )
No one, other than perhaps eduncan, thinks Stanback is slow.
He ran track. And nearly qualified for nationals (?).
I'm not convinced Burnett is sturdy enough to be an every down 3-4 ILB.Vintage;1860038 said:Don't rule out Burnett taking that spot either...
Burnett gets a lot of sub work in. Wade likes his coverage skills. He gives us speed and athleticism at the LBer spot (particularly ILB).
The reality of it is, in our base defense currently, Ware is a freak athlete, Bradie/Akin are mediocre....and Ellis is below average for a LBer. Outside of Ware, there isn't a ton of speed in our base 3-4 package at LBer.
Burnett (and Carpenter) would bring both speed and athleticism to our base package if one unseats Ayodele. And Spencer would bring good athleticism/speed too.....but Ellis probably starts next year.
Carpenter is signed through 2010, so there's no reason to even worry about re-signing him.rlgiv;1860042 said:I want to see what Carp is capable of as well but even if he plays well I don't see him breaking in as a starter. If we do resign him at won't be but for anything more than back up money.
I agree. It'd be interesting to see a Ratliff/Hatcher, Spears/Tank, Canty/Bowen line next year. The Spears to NT just may be the most interesting point of this game. If he plays well at the nose that may free up Ratliff to go back to end once Ferguson is healed up. With Tank in the mix NT has turned into a position of strength from one of our weakest going into the season.

Big Dakota;1860049 said:He's doesn't play off blocks well enough IMO. Coverage and STs are clearly his niche. Asking him to play the run inside all year might kill the poor guy.
Vintage;1860051 said:Maybe he is, maybe he isn't.
But he really does do a nice job in coverage for us (or maybe that's just in comparison to some of our other LBers).
And I'd like to see his speed, coverage skills (we still struggle with TEs and RBs), and athleticism on the field. And he can rush the passer some too...
I just want to see what a lineup of Ware and Spencer on the outside, with James and Burnett on the inside would be able to do.... I think it gives us a great blend of speed (Burnett, Ware, Spencer somewhat), pass rush ability (Ware, Spencer in the near future, Burnett/James somewhat), and coverage ability (Burnett, Ware, Spencer somewhat)....
Oh yeah, I don't see any reason to change up the mixture of Burnett coming in on pass downs even if Carpenter takes Ayodele's spot on 1st and 2nd downs. Obviously we won't be able to keep them both forever, but when you've got the talent, you might as well use it.Vintage;1860055 said:Possibly. But did Donnie Edwards excel at getting off blocks?
He was primarily used as a coverage guy in San Diego.... Burnett could be utilized in a similar fashion.
Though, having a Jamal Williams in the middle certainly keeps blockers off you too....
