racism in soccer is mostly prevalent in Spain and Italy. Way way less in the EPL.

Also, diving has been greatly reduced in the EPL the last couple of years due to giving more yellow cards to divers. And in England, diving is seen as one of the worst possible actions.

Diving is more prevalent in South America, Spain, and Italy.

Except apparently by rationalizing that every sport has its issues.

The current racism is by far the worst aspect IMO.

Or how 'bout the Mexican crowds chanting "Osama, Osama" shortly after 9-11? Classy.

while that was insanely idiotic, they were a minimal faction and were booed in their own stadium by the rest of the fans...

I mention that since you decided to omit that part. (or you were uninformed)

Most of these guys just don't understand the sport.

I get that. I used to be the same way.

If you actually know whats going on and still dont like it than fine.

But if you think guys are just out there kicking a ball around with no tactics or anything involved than your opinion is worthless.

Soccer vs Baseball is comical. The 2 aren't even close.

Soccer in a lot of ways is like the NFL except it is played with the feet.

You still have to play good defense, make good passes, have playmakers, and all that other good stuff.

Is it better than the NFL? Hell no. But it isn't as close to as bad as many people think it is.

I think the LA Galaxy franchise has done a lot though for the progression of Soccer in America and the sport is a lot popular here in 2009 than it has been at any other time.

Heck it got me to become a fan and I was just as much of a Soccer hater as anybody on here.

You explained it well

I rarely watch pro soccer but I enjoy the game and its not as bad as the people here make it out to be. I also referee youth soccer (Hey, its easy and extra money. But I also mess up on a lot of calls and feel terrible afterwards). Its an interesting game that does require a lot of skill and strategy. I'm kinda doubting MLS ever gets very big, but the World Cup is a ton of fun to watch. I see teams play with more heart in that than any other teams in any sport. It doesn't seem like just a job then. Sure theres a lot of flopping which is annoying and I hate, but it doesn't ruin the game (Theres a lot of it in basketball too, and they dont do ANYTHING to the players who fake it. Ex: The Utah Jazz). I prefer football to it, but soccer is still a good sport. I think a lot of people have the wrong view of it.

Those were a dozen idiots that were booed out of the stadium.

Its not like the NFL hasn't had their idiot fans too.

Players have had batteries and bottles chunked at them.

Those are what we like to call "Eagles fans."

I always have to laugh when a soccer fan mentions people not understanding the game. I will get back to that.

Have you ever stopped to consider that the thuggish behavior of Eagles fans is one reason why we hate the Eagles? Now think about the actions of soccer fans. To me there is little difference except that often soccer fans are even worse. That's right, worse than Eagles fans who are widely considered the worst football fans on the planet. For the same reason I do not respect Eagles fans, I do not respect soccer fans. Throw blatant racism on top of it, and I am never going to be converted to that not worth a crap game.

I do understand the game. I have played the game. I was actually an All Star Goalie as a kid. I admit I did not deserve that award. Openly admit it in fact.

I think that more than anything else makes me hate the game. We played an entire season with no one scoring on us. It had nothing to do with me. I could have taken a nap back there and we would have won easily. I think I only had to stop 3 goals all season. Our team had one player in particular that was simply too good for the rest of the league. He was from Bolivia and it was rare that anyone could even get the ball on our side of the field. Once they did he would steal it and get it into our attack zones.

Now, I openly admit I admire the fact he was a superior athlete to the rest of us (for that sport) and I acknowledge that about him. I do not deny these guys are in great cardio condition. In every other sport that we played as kids, I made him look as inept as he made me feel in soccer. Was I horrible at soccer? No, in fact I was as good as anyone else on the team except him.

It just bores the hell out of me. I admire marathoners too, but I would never watch a marathon. Jogging (which is what soccer players do moreso than running) is not interesting to me. Not even when it is about attack angles and schemes.

And I literally detest the flopping. I have zero respect for the rolling on the ground in agony only to be fine as wine when the official flashes his little card.

Did you know that one time in England a match was halted by a dense fog so thick that no one could see? The referees halted the game and the players left the field. Except for one of the goalies who did not hear the call to halt the game. He stayed in goal for another 20 minutes thinking that the match was simply happening on the other side of the field. It never occurred to him that something was wrong. Yeah, that's how exciting soccer is.

That is a true story.

Also, playing the game as a kid or teenager in America does not mean you know the game. Yeah, it's probably boring because people over here don't know how to play.

I played for 5 or 6 years as a kid/teenager, and I didn't actually understand the game until I saw a ton of Arsenal matches.

The European and South American club game is COMPLETELY different from that found in the American youth and professional system. It's pretty much night and day. Over here, everyone just runs after the ball with no regards to positioning, formation, tactics, angles, etc.

Like I said earlier, if you've watched European club teams and still think it's boring, that's fine. But don't say it's boring after watching American teams or playing as a kid.

Everybody`s entitled to their opinion and I can certainly understand people who hate soccer but what everybody needs to admit is this “it`s not a coincidence that soccer is the world’s game, every country on earth plays it and that`s why a guy like Beckham or Ronaldo can go to Indonesia, Costa Rica, South Africa or the US and there would be hundreds of thousands of fans waiting for him” not the case for example for Payton Manning or Tom Brady (probably the NFL`s best known players). My point is there has to be something great about soccer since most sports fans worldwide love it, some of us get it some of us don`t, but when it comes to popularity around the world it`s not even a contest and if you love sports you have to respect that.

Except that it happened. Reality sucks.

We could argue for 10 straight days about this, we could get into the many racist things that have happened in the US but that`s not the point, you cannot assume somebody or some country is racist because some idiots did or said stupid things, you are generalizing and that is not fair.
