Was Aikman overrated?

I think Troy sacrificed personal stats for rings. I really believe, that if he was a selfish QB Dallas doesn't win 3 rings. In my humble opinion, the 1994 NfC Championship game was a glimpse of what Troy could do if he were let loose for 10-12 years

Me and a buddy are in a disagreement. He says Aikman was overrated and he's in the Hall of Fame because he was on a great team and that he was a bus driver.
I said to him, without Aikman Cowboys don't win 3 Super Bowls if any at all. Aikman did what he had to do and it wasn't about gawdy stats but if Aikman had to put up big numbers than he could have.

You’re buddy is an idiot. Find a new buddy.

He never made All Pro, so no, he wasn't.

I agree, in a different offense he could've put up Marino-like numbers.
But I guarantee Marino would trade his stats for Troy's rings, not vice-versa.

Fwiw, he was fortunate to play several years on all-world teams.

How the game has changed has drastically altered how fans see QBs that played most of their career before 2000. People look at his yards, career tds, qbr, etc. and say wow most modern QBs are better statistically he must be overrated.

The no contact rule in the mid 90s made things easier for receivers and qbs as players. Then additional rule changes later on influenced more friendly passing attacks. For comparative purposes the average nfl team passes for 30 more yards a game over the last decade vs the 90s. The top QBs have delivered much more than that.

Though statistically Aikman looks overrated you could say the same for most earlier decade QBs, but he's 1 of 4 QBs to win 3 or more Super Bowls in his career and would argue a bus driver can't do that.

I love Aikman but the offense ran through Emmitt. He was a system QB who sacrificed so the team could experience success and not just himself. Ultimate team player who held everyone accountable around him. He did what was asked of him and did it quite well.

Don't forget Michael Irvin. He was a beast. We needed all 3 of the triplets.

Who overrates him except haters?

He was a first ballot HOF, right where a QB who leads a team to win 3 SBs in four years should be.

People also forget the toll the rookie year had on Aikman. He was considered to be pretty mobile coming out of UCLA. He was also recruited to Oklahoma to run the wishbone. The injuries he had in the first year really impacted what he could do longer term. Anyone who knows anything about football knows Aikman did everything a quarterback is expected to do at the highest level. Plus I also think his leadership is under valued by today’s fans. His intolerance for anything less than perfection made the entire team better. To me that is the difference between Romo and Aikman. Romo as talented as he was wasn’t capable of motivating the average players on both sides of the ball to perform at their best consistently. Aikman was. This is also what Brady has and that Rodgers doesn’t.

I see Young listed in this thread. To me he is the Emmitt Smith of Quarterbacks. I hated Young when he played. But he was darn good and people forget that or think he just benefited from the system like they think that of Emmitt. Young was basically Lamar Jackson who could throw for 350 yards a game every week. Of course I’m biased towards to Aikman, but I’d take Young over Favre, Manning, and maybe even Rodgers.

Goose gosselin wrote an amazing article years ago dispelling this, it was something like basically Troy and the passing game in the first half of games were exceptional and would build a lead and then they’d switch the the running game to close it out.

Troy had a great team around him, that said, he is a deserving HOF player. Very accurate, great competitive drive and a great leader.
And he played better in the playoffs than he did in regular season lots better And that is better than great during the regular season
