Extremely accurate QB who didn't have video game numbers because they were run first, but he was just as vital to the Cowboys success as Irvin & Emmitt.

With aikmans timing and accuracy. In the modern nfl and db’s not being able to play physical. He would complete over 70% of his passes.

He was perfect for the timing-based offense because he understood how to throw the ball where the receiver would be instead of where he was. That's an underrated skill. It would take forever to count how many times a receiver turned around on a route and the ball was right there.

It's sad that some fans (both ours and others) don't understand that you don't discount a player because he had other great players around him. No teams win a Super Bowl with just one. Was Staubach not a great player because he had Pearson, Dorsett, Rafferty, a great defense, etc.?

Also, Aikman was money in the playoffs.
This! As the games grew more important, Aikman got better and better. And I'm convinced Aikman is the one who held everyone accountable for our 5th trophy...his 3rd. He filled the disciplinarian role that Switzer didn't.

If not an NFC East team, Niners would have been my guess. He's talking smack, or he only believes what he wants to believe.
They’re all still mad and think those were their Super Bowls Still can come to terms with the fact we took them. The 92 team had a chance the 93 team got pummeled. They literally went out and built their 94 team to beat us and we still should have beat them.

Me and a buddy are in a disagreement. He says Aikman was overrated and he's in the Hall of Fame because he was on a great team and that he was a bus driver.
I said to him, without Aikman Cowboys don't win 3 Super Bowls if any at all. Aikman did what he had to do and it wasn't about gawdy stats but if Aikman had to put up big numbers than he could have.

Your buddy is a moron. Find better friends.

Heck No.
If 90s Cowboys was more pass oriented, Aikman's. numbers would have doubled.
For about 6 years, that line was so good Emmitt Smith became NFL's all time rushing leader. And Aikman was one of the most accurate passer in the league.
It was the perfect storm.

Told me that Steve Young was a far superior QB to Aikman.

Steve Young was a great QB who played nothing like Aikman. Totally different Qbs. Young was a runner who could also throw. But Aikman was pinpoint accurate with the ball and had a better arm.

I never got to watch Troy play so I’ve always wondered what quarterback today is sort of his modern analog. All I have to go off of are his stats and I know they are deflated because of the era along with the nature of the 90s Cowboys offense as a rushing attack

I’ll ask the older zoners, if you had to compare Troy to a modern QB who would it be?

Aikman was part of a team that brought so much joy to Cowboy fans that most would say no. Myself included. But if a QB needs his running back to have 20 carries a game in order for his win percentage to be in the high 80's then he's a bus driver. So Aikman was in the same class of QB's as Dak...bus drivers.

The big difference between Aikman and Dak is Aikman's throws could beat tight coverage. If a QB has an excellent touch on the deep ball and his throws can beat tight coverage, then no that QB is not over rated. Aikman had a better skill set, a better team, and better coaching. But at the end of the day Aikman was and is everything you'd want in a QB.

You put Aikman on this Cowboys team and we are definitely contenders.

Aikman doesn't fit my definition of an elite QB, but his three SB championships and a SB MVP more than makes up for it.

Troy Aikman wasn’t asked to put up big numbers which is why his career numbers pale in comparison to some of his peers. Had it not been for the three Super Bowl wins he wouldn’t be in the Hall of Fame because he didn’t have stats but he was a great QB. He tossed 4 TD passes in his first Super Bowl and was named the games MVP. He made some huge plays in critical situations like the slant to Alvin Harper in the 1992 NFC title game. The Cowboys were the team of the 90s that won 3 Super Bowls in four years and Troy Aikman was a big part of it. Some fans choose to judge him strictly off his career numbers but he definitely wasn’t overrated.

We saw the cowboys drop off once Aikman gone. Anyone who remembers the Quincy Carter era knows aikman wasn't overrated. Madden used to love to talk about how accurate Aikman was. Aikman could've had better numbers if he was in a west coast offense team instead of a team who would run emmitt smith down your throat and eat up the clock doing so.

I loved Aikman’s short to intermediate passing game. He could drive the ball with accuracy and time routes with the very best that ever played QB. He tended to loft the ball on deep routes but was blessed with receivers who could adjust superbly. Troy was a tough dude on the run but was kinda of stiff-legged and way too upright when running into tacklers - a prime example was his punishment dealt by Lavar Arrington as Troy attempted a run to paydirt against the team formerly named the ‘(Something)-skins towards the end of Troy’s career. Ugly.

When the Cowboys fell back to ‘middle-ing’ onthe offensive line - Troy’s lack of mobility was exposed. Thankfully he retired before he was bludgeoned to death - having already suffered seversl concussions. Troy was smart enough to realize he might not survive another concussion.

Aikman was awesome in his prime and could process coverages as well as any QB the Cowboys ever had - including Roger. He was also lucky in that he enjoyed perhaps the most overwhelming run game the ‘Boys ever had. And, for much of his career, a very dominant defense and special teams. And Jimmy Johnson.
