Wasn't Gallup supposed to replace Dez?

Last year, Dez was our de facto No. 1 receiver, Beasley was No. 2 and Williams was No. 3.

This year, Beasley is our No. 1 receiver, Hurns is our No. 2 and Gallup/Thompson is our No. 3 .(at this point) based on snaps. The pecking order is still being established, though. It may be Beasley, Gallup and Austin when it's all said and done.

There is no pecking order. That much is clear. Just look at the # of targets per wr. Dak is spreading the ball around not favoring anyone. I think each WR has lined up on the outside and in the slot. They are being moved around like interchangeable parts...........which is pretty close to the truth. You could bench any one of them or start any one of them and not see an effect on the game.

The only pecking order is the snap count. Beasley gets the most, so he is favored.

Pass distribution is different than the number of snaps. The number of snaps shows who the coaches prefer to be out there.

So far, it's Beasley, Hurns, Thompson and Gallup. Austin and Williams are getting close to the same number of snaps, but Austin clearly is considered a specialty role player.

Wasn't Gallup supposed to replace Dez? Because I don't see anything from him. He's not fast, he runs lazy routes, I suppose he has good hands but I haven't seen anything up to this point. Can he block? He looks like a worse version of old dez.

Am I missing something? I know he's a rookie but damn.

Like you said: he's a rookie. So I'd suggest to give him some time. Receiver is one of those positions that takes time.

i dont see lazy routes
Bryant finished his rookie season with 45 receptions for 561 yards and six receiving touchdowns.

And Bryant has a remarkable rookie season. It doesn't always go that smoothly for receivers. It's like people are not paying attention to the draft time questioning about it not being worth to pick a receiver in the first round. Many first rounders don't pan out and yet we want instant gratification with a 3rd rounder.

The problem was for some fans in their desire to claim the WRs corps was just fine and would be really good is that they ignored the reality that rookie WRs often take some time to get their feet under them. It might even take a full season. You occasionally get some rookies who make immediate, big impacts but it's not that often.

People should have tempered their expectations of Gallup and gone into this knowing the kid would likely need some time, maybe a lot of time, to get acclimated to the NFL game.

I still think he'll be a good WR and it's way to early to project what he is or won't be.
Exactly. If you are expecting a 3rd round rookie to catch 60+ passes, you can expect to be disappointed

Dez underachieved for all of his talent. Can you imagine how great he could have been had he not been a head case and worked on his route running? I won't deny that he helped this team and had some very good numbers but he never reached his full potential.

Well I used to complain about Dez being more like Alvin Harper than his number sake 88. Or It seemed like Dez's first few years here he would make one amazing big play catch and then you wouldn't hear from him for the rest of the game. If Dez would've worked on his route running, and knew how to get emotional in a way that effected the team positively, then he would be Michael Irvin. I didn't become a true believer in Dez until 2014, but then afterwards its like when we pay receivers they get injured and drop off the face of the earth.

Your first mistake was believing the hype around here. Probably some of the same contingent who thought Switzer was going to be a beast and was already better than Beasley. Regarding Gallup though, I almost started a thread at the end of preseason expressing a little concern. He'd dropped 2 passes towards the end of preseason that had me thinking, "hmmm," but like I'm sure plenty have said, he's a rookie and not really expected to step into a WR1 role by himself.

Well I wasn't part of that contingent. Since well an unproven player has to prove himself to me first. But with that said, Switzer might of been the next Beasley if we gave him time to develop and a fair chance. I mean Tavon Austin was in a similar situation as Switzer and didn't have a fair chance until he got here, and now he looks like he has a chance to be the #1. Well that's just two games in and I said a chance. :)

While i am disappointed in his production to this point, let's give him a chance. I predict by the 10th game he will be starting.

I would like for it to happen now and force feed him the ball. He will grow. He has shown an ability to get deep and run good routes, his hands have been terrible, which is not his M.O.

Let's be patient with him.
To be fair to Dak, the pass to MG on the crossing pattern late in the game should’ve been caught. He dropped it so he is like Dez already.

I’m setting the O/U on Gallup receiving TD’s this season at 3.

I get that but this guy had some serious hype around here. I have yet to see any glimpse of something special. That's why I'm asking. What has he shown thus far? To me absolutely nothing.

Guess the Alabama game got everyone including myself excited and would just roll right on in here without skipping a beat.

The biggest thing I’ve learned from closely monitoring the cowboys from afar in training camp is that the press corps always falls in love with two or three receivers. It’s easy to do, because they make acrobatic catches in one-on-one drills. When the season starts those players rarely contribute.

Gallup may be above average or average, but it will take time. Just don’t believe the preseason hype about pass catchers. I’ve fallen for it too many times.
