Wasn't Gallup supposed to replace Dez?

Dez was always over-rated, move on...

Exactly, and I don't want Gallup to be the next Dez. I want Gallup to be the best receiver that HE can be. Trying to force him to be Dez is unfair to him. They're both two different chaps, and as well they should be. Treat them like individuals, and coach up Gallup to reach or exceed his potential. That's all I ask of our coaches, as far as Gallup is concerned.

Dez was not overrated from 2011-2014. he was one of the top WRs in the league that had some injury problems after the 2014 seasons. His 2014 season is still one of the best WR years in Cowboys history.

We can talk about Dez being overrated AFTER 2014, but to say he was always overrated is you folks trying to make yourself feel better about the receivers we have.

Last year, Dez was our de facto No. 1 receiver, Beasley was No. 2 and Williams was No. 3.

This year, Beasley is our No. 1 receiver, Hurns is our No. 2 and Gallup/Thompson is our No. 3 .(at this point) based on snaps. The pecking order is still being established, though. It may be Beasley, Gallup and Austin when it's all said and done.

Wasn't Gallup supposed to replace Dez? Because I don't see anything from him. He's not fast, he runs lazy routes, I suppose he has good hands but I haven't seen anything up to this point. Can he block? He looks like a worse version of old dez.

Am I missing something? I know he's a rookie but damn.

No, you know he's a rookie , but damn you're harsh and over expecting.

There I fixed it.

I don’t recall him being billed as the WR to replace Dez. And I don’t think they thought ..”Here’s our franchise #1”..and probably wasn’t even the top WR on their board. I think they were just doing the best they could given the needs everywhere, and will continue to work on it. I don’t think he’s bad though, just needs to find his way into the offense. This unit looks to me like it’s still unsure of itself,so it’s tough to say who’s going to step up from game to game.

I get that but this guy had some serious hype around here. I have yet to see any glimpse of something special. That's why I'm asking. What has he shown thus far? To me absolutely nothing.

Your first mistake was believing the hype around here. Probably some of the same contingent who thought Switzer was going to be a beast and was already better than Beasley. Regarding Gallup though, I almost started a thread at the end of preseason expressing a little concern. He'd dropped 2 passes towards the end of preseason that had me thinking, "hmmm," but like I'm sure plenty have said, he's a rookie and not really expected to step into a WR1 role by himself.

Hurns was supposed to replace Dez until next near, when we go shopping agian. Gallup was a guy we were hoping to have start before the end of the season. That's actually very optimistic for a 3rd round pick, and it still might happen.

If you want to get on a guy we haven't seen enough from, try Hurns.

If that's true, why do the Cowboys 2nd and 3rd units continually get dominated in preseason?

The Cowboys TE, S, and WR groups are all bottom 3-5 in the NFL. Are there any competitive teams that have 3 position groups that are bottom 5 in the league?

The Cowboys rest their best players and start many backups. They then routinely pull those who start a series before the opposition and again with the third string around the half.

And you don't know what the other 31 teams position groups look like to make an statement like that. You don't like those groups is all that can be taken from that claim.

I think you're overlooking the point of what I was saying. He didn't become elite immediately, and I stated that trying to force Gallup to become Dez is unfair to him. Firstly, Gallup is a 3rd rounder, whereas Dez was a 1st rounder. Thus, the expectations should be weighed accordingly. I think Gallup is going to become an excellent WR in his own right, but expecting him to play like a 1st round WR is unfair because he isn't one.

Dez was never worth that contract. Dez thought he was the next Irvin ... so glad he is gone...

Additionally, I don't fancy the idea terribly of drafting a WR in the first round. Firstly, they do take time to develop, and you can find lots of talented WRs later. Terrell Owens (I am in NO WAY insinuating that Gallup is TO) was drafted in round 3, and he turned out to be a HOF WR. Antonio Brown has been excellent for the Steelers, and he was a 6th round pick (interestingly, he has been on the same team longer than Dez). Keenan Allen (a more reasonable comparison for Gallup) is a good WR for the Chargers. The point is, you don't HAVE to have a great WR in round 1. You can find excellent WR talent later, and that's what I think we have in Gallup.

really? runs lazy routes? This is a pretty hateful post about a 3rd round pick playing WR.

And he wasn't supposed to replace Dez.

No, Hurns was. Gallup was supposed to replace Michael Irvin.

Dez is one of the greatest WRs in our franchise history. Be grateful for what you saw because it will be a longtime before anyone of his caliber walks through those doors again, and be happy if Gallup can eventually become half of what Dez was at his peak.

Completely different player with completely different skill-set
Yep. Gallup is a complete receiver. He's better with routes than the OP stated with this thread. Only not so hot route was the sideline throw where Apple squeezed him (and made Gallup juice instead of if Gallup squeezing him and making Apple Juice, lol). Other than that he's looked pretty good to me.

WR is one of the hardest positions for a rookie to make an immediate impact at. Give the kid some time DallasDomination.

Dude is a third round rookie WR. He's got talent, but let's not get ahead of ourselves here (think Taco, think Jaylon). We as fans have to get past this, "if they don't pan out week 1 rookie year, they're busts" logic.
That logic, is ill.

Taco gets a sack and everyone switches over to Gallup as the “guy who isn’t living up to expectations” I see...
