Although Spears and Carp may improve over the years. But they will never play to the potential of the position they were drafted.

These 2 guys at best are 5th round draft picks.

against the pass, Spears has been subpar, but he has done nice against the run.

The real tragedy is what happened 3 years and 353 posts ago.

wow.

9-1.

Yet the board is littered with skip bayless comments, carpenter and spears suck, julius jones sucks and of course Roy Williams sucks thread.

Amazing.

Imagine if we were losing.

no kidding man, I am dreading the day we lose a game, can you imagine the chaos that will follow with some of these people

And we struck gold with Romo, Ratliff, Crayton, Barber, etc. Drafting isn't an exact science. What's your point exactly?

Spears is a solid 3-4 De - He holds fort and will be a long term NFL good player for us in rotation.

Carpenter - That was a reach and he is not making a role for himself. Two coaches and same opinion. He may not be long to Cowboy roster - too bad at #18 in 1st you can't whiff.

Let's cry over spilled milk!

:)

Lets see..............it used to be: Have Roy gain some wt and move to LB

.............Carpenter....Have him loose some wt and move him to SS
---could cover Shocky and colley as good as Roy....

ok ok......fighting absurdity with more absurdity........

but its fun........

and really could he be any worse in space than Roy............and his LB instinct would still be tough enough against the run......

he might even understand the def play call scheme called

Randy White went from LB to DT, Urlacher from SS to LB.........

The bottom line is......

There's no way in the world you could get any #1 draft pick for Spears or Carpenter, not even a late first round pick.

That doesn't make either of them "busts" nor does it mean either "sucks."

However, they were unfortunate selections by the Cowboys.

No one would give even a #32 pick for Spears as a DE because he can't rush the passer at all, which means he would be a total flop at 4-3 DE. He also has never proven to be tough enough to play 4-3 DT. He is a run-stuffing DE who doesn't get any pressure on the QB and who doesn't get into the backfield for tackles for loss, either. He can have a long career in the NFL as a 3-4 DE, but he is not worthy of the selection used on him, and it remains to be seen whether he can remain a starter.

Carpenter has some pretty good LB's in front of him in Dallas. My guess is that he could start for some teams as a 4-3 OLB. However, even though he still has time to develop, he's clearly not a stud LB...he will also end up somewhere when his contract with Dallas is up, but there's no way any team in the NFL would give a #1 selection for him.

When you spend two #1's on guys where we selected Spears and Carpenter, barring injury, you should be able to look around and see plenty of teams that would give you a #1 pick for them. Right now, Spencer would garner a higher selection than either of them.

They were not good selections for the Cowboys...period.

Draft is hit and miss, no team is batting 1.000 with draft picks.

I have no problem with Spears...he isn't exactly Richard Seymour, but he is an effective run stuffer. Carp is just in the wrong place at the wrong time...he looked like he was coming on last year, but now he's back at square one.
I think they would be best dealing Carp next offseason to a team who sees his potential for a third or fourth round pick and cut our losses.
