We have failed to address 3 primary needs in FA

While Carr is making too much for his stats he is still on our team and isn't the real hole in the secondary...
Regardless of signing a free agent I don't think we would really cut Carr. Mo Claiborne is half as reliable and half as good as Carr. Scandrick is our preferred slot CB.

I think looking for a cheap veteran CB in free agency was to provide depth since he really can't count on Claiborne to stay healthy or not get beat consistently.

We have B Jones but he had some issues at CB last year and probably would have a better chance to have a great career at Safety.

Given that Dallas is being so frugal, maybe they should just try to extend Carr by offering similar numbers to what they offered Robinson. He will be around 4.5 Million in dead money this year anyway, so if they extend they can probably get him in at a similar cap hit and a much lower hit when cut time comes in 2018.

The offseason is far from over for the C'boys until our participation in the draft is a done deal and possibly even later. Here's to holding out hope for an exceptional draft to favor us appreciably.

Whew. Guess we should never draft a rookie qb, since you know they have very little value.

You know what I mean....this had nothing to do with drafting. The thread is about finding a backup...and rookie QB's have no value. Even when they start, their teams don't win...the value is in their getting the experience for the future. Of course we should draft a rookie QB, whether round 1 or later, but for this season, he will have zero value, and he won't be the backup until we are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.

Save the draft, it pretty much is.

That said, this franchise is/was not in the position to make runs at the top DEs, CBs or QBs available in free agency.

We still have the post June cuts and the always entertaining (at least here) cutting down to 53 in September.

When's the last time that happened?

I think the pass rush will be better with Crawford, Lawrence and Gregory getting healthy. You added Thornton. Those 4 weeks without Gregory are going to be a mystery. But i'm not sure what you could've done there. Jake Long probably was the best candidate since at this point in his career he's probably a role player especially for that salary. But if you signed Mario to that contract all you were going to do was stop Gregory's progress.

And the same can be said about the secondary.........the secondary should be better with Byron Jones at free safety and another year in his belt and Scandrick coming back. How good will these units be? I don't know but it won't matter if Romo isn't healthy.

Just fall back to the burn barrel and take one's daily dose of Ripple...as to insults for brain work, I'll make my own statements. Yours are just wrong and inadequate.

Don't get all teary eyed Charlotte. It'll be ok.

The Giants, Jaguars, and maybe the Titans were about the only teams that did anything in free agency. And I am not impressed with what they did. The free agency class this year stunk. And the draft is looking mediocre, maybe solid but nothing spectacular. So, I would not get all excited about the draft and expect any draft picks to come in and immediately fill needs. Ain't likely happening.

Hopefully, last year's draft class will step up and Romo will stay healthy.

That is why teams need to think long term and best player available over need in the draft. Expecting rookie draft picks to fill needs is an exercise in failure.

You can't get everything you want in Free Agency.
Some players do not want to come here.
Some players are not a team fit.
Some players are not a scheme fit.

Whittle down the group and you try not to over pay for the talent, as it will bit you later if something happens.

Injuries will happen this year too.

We've done little to nothing to improve the roster. We've gotten slightly better at DT, worse at DE, better at backup RB (whooptie-do!), and done nothing to improve backup QB.

Meanwhile we've added no help to the secondary, LB, WR, Special teams, wash at QB.

Do we really expect three or four rookies to come in and provide us with the a) pass rush b) turnovers we couldn't get from last year's roster, which is almost completely the same?

A capable QB helps more than you think

Sure, in your world they don't. But we here don't live in it.

Given our frugality in FA, I hope the FO takes a long term look when drafting and takes Wentz or Goff at 4. As constituted, this is not a super bowl roster (our D has not proven it can get off the field) and the Romo's "window" is closing fast. Had we been more proactive in FA, I might think differently. But not now.
