We need to stop kidding ourselves about Turpin

If one looks at the rankings of kick returners and punt returners from last season, they'll see that Turpin actually ranks poorly.

I was shocked he made the pro bowl. His decision making is very bad. Too often he tried to be the hero, making ill-advised returns that left the team in poor starting field position. I won't say he gives you nothing, but it's absolutely not enough to justify a roster spot.

Lamb, Cooks, Gallup & Tolbert are locks. The #5 and #6 WR spots should go do promising developmental players. Turpin should be cut.

Consider Brooks, Fehoko, Houston, Cropper, or Stephens for those last 2 spots.

We need to stop kidding ourselves Turpin is just a little turd that showed in a weak big 12 conference and a weak USFL, he’s fast but not fast enough and the more he gets hit the more he will fumble.
“Little turd?” Have you played in the NFL?

What's it going to be then, eh?

Good post.

I wonder if we sign Robbie Gould and then have him run an Oklahoma Drill man on man. I bet Gould takes him out again.

What is he projecting?

Turp is obviously a decent returner. Overrated, but still pretty good. I admittedly overrated him last year, but we were hard up for a returner.

Dowdle's fumble doesn't worry me all that much. It worries me, but not much. It's not outrageous to be concerned that Turpin could be prone to fumbles.

It's a popularity contest. ProBowl isn't really indicative of all that much, especially when it comes to Cowboys players. Cowboys have the most fans, so of course, their players are going to get the most votes.

He's a decent returner. Maybe Turp will be better in McCarthy's offense. The fact he couldn't get on the field much last year in spite of us needing a WR to step up, should tell us something. I'm not saying he sucks as a returner. But it has yet to be seen what he can do against a top-level NFL defense. I'm not writing him off. I still want to see more of what he can do.

My deal is, if all he is going to do is return, and is prone to fumble, there may be a better player to fill his roster spot. If he can contribute to the offense, I'm all good with it. Time will tell. There are still 3 preseason games left.
It wasn’t popularity
No one knew who he even was
It’s was the fact he was near the top of the league in both punt and kick returns

He was 5th in yards per return at 10.4
he also avg 24.2 per kick return which would have been 6th but he didn’t return enough
I don’t know where your stats come from

Turpin also had the most fumbles of any of the top 25 punt returners. (three)

Geez, the guy plays back to back seasons with no break, holds up physically, and not only makes the pro bowl but also first team All Pro, but let’s stop kidding ourselves, he’s just a turd.

You really can’t make this crap up. After all this time, the Zone still surprises me.

I would like to see his return average go up 5 yards. He had a clutch return. He just screwed up its potential. At the absolute wrong time.

I like having a genuine threat as a returner on this team but really that's a low percentage payout. I'd rather use that roster spot for positions they want to run long in,,, WR or DB or TE

He's the new Lucky Whitehead. Handles KRs and maybe gets one jet sweep per game. Given that KRs basically don't exist any more, we'll see if that's enough to keep a roster spot.
