Jaworski thinks Cutler’s a cut above
By Terry McCormick, tmccormick@nashvillecitypaper.com
April 17, 2006

Ron Jaworski wears many hats.

The former NFL quarterback is an analyst for ESPN, co-hosts NFL Matchup and was in Nashville over the weekend with the Arena Football League’s Philadelphia Soul, a team he has part ownership in.

One hat Jaworski is probably glad he’s not wearing right now is that of an NFL general manager. That said, Jaworski has a very strong opinion as to who he would take if he had the Tennessee Titans’ No. 3 overall pick in the April 29-30 draft. And it might surprise you.

“It’s not my decision, obviously. It’s a tough decision,” Jaworski said. “I have studied all the quarterbacks, and I like [Jay] Cutler the best of them.”

Jaworski says his preference for the Vanderbilt star is not to belittle the accomplishments of the more heralded Matt Leinart and Vince Young. He just believes that the Commodore quarterback is NFL-ready because of the circumstances he played under.

“I think Matt Leinart is going to be very good, and I think Vince Young is going to be very good. … Everyone has different opinions. What I like about Cutler is that he threw with pressure on him,” Jaworski said. “His offensive line wasn’t that good, and I saw throws that you have to make at the NFL level, people around him, bodies, throwing from different platforms, around people, sidearm, over the top, and taking hits looking down the gun barrel.

“I didn’t see a whole lot of separation from his wide receiving corps, so he was throwing through tight windows. He had to throw accurately with pressure on him. That projects well in the National Football League.”

Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and even one of Jaworski’s ESPN cohorts regards Cutler as the draft’s most overrated player right now.

“Mel [Kiper] has his own opinion. I look at the game tape, and that doesn’t lie,” Jaworski said. “When you look at every pass Vince Young has thrown, every pass Jay Cutler has thrown, and every pass Matt Leinart has thrown, you get a pretty good idea. I don’t need anyone to tell me. I played 30 years at the quarterback position, so I’ve got a pretty good feel for it.”

STEAL OF THE DRAFT

JAWS HAD JETS' CLEMENS RATED NO. 1 QBMay 13, 2006 -- Ron Jaworski knows quarterbacks. He was a pretty good one in college, carved out a solid NFL career, and takes a lot of pride in his breakdown of QBs in his current role as an ESPN analyst.
Ask him about Kellen Clemens, the Jets' second-round pick out of Oregon, and you might be inclined to jump out of your shoes if you're a Jets fan.
"I watched every game of his college career, every throw he made, and based on game performance I had him rated No. 1 amongst the quarterbacks in this draft," Jaworski said of Clemens in a phone interview with The Post. "I looked at one game and put my evaluation down and then looked at another and another, and as time went on I was blown away.
"One thing I heard about the guy is that he's only 6-15/8. To that my next question was, 'Did you see the guy play?' "
Clemens yesterday was unveiled in a Jets uniform for the first time, wearing No. 6 as the club began its weekend rookie mini-camp at Hofstra.
Asked about his aspirations about being the Jets' starting quarterback, Clemens said, "I'd love to someday, but right now I've got a lot of work to do before I can really go out and contribute the way the Jets need to me to."
Asked to describe himself as a quarterback, Clemens said, "A team leader sort of guy, a competitor. I try not to talk about me too much."
document.write
Naysayers are quick to point out that Clemens is only about a half-inch taller than Brooks Bollinger, the third-string QB who became the Jets' starter last year when Chad Pennington and Jay Fiedler were lost for the season in Week 3.
"It's not even close between [Clemens] and Bollinger and I don't mean to demean Brooks, because he can be a serviceable backup in this league," Jaworski said. "But Clemens is about 20 pounds heavier than Bollinger, has a much stronger arm, and has really strong legs and can break tackles. He doesn't go down easily."
Clemens was a more prolific passer in college than Bollinger, who was more a threat with his legs than his arm.
"[Clemens] has a quick release, a strong arm, can make multiple throws, does a great job processing information and finding the open receiver, has the anticipation you need," Jaworski said. "All of those things were there. The one negative I saw was I didn't think he was consistent enough with the deep ball.
"I saw nothing but upside. I had him at No. 1, ahead of [Matt] Leinart, [Jay] Cutler and [Vince] Young and everyone else until I saw the [NFL] Combine tapes and was concerned, because he wasn't healthy. That put up a little red flag."
Clemens, who missed the last several games of the 2005 season with a broken left fibula and wasn't 100 percent at the Combine, said yesterday that he's fine, recovered and ready to go.
"All the intangibles are there," Jaworski said. "I talked to a number of coaches that worked him out and put him to the chalkboard and they were blown away by him. Seven or eight NFL head coaches said, from the neck up, this guy is best guy in the draft."

OMG... So ONE guy had Clemens rated above the Big 3. Who gives a flying ****?? I guess you didn't read the part where Jaws ranked him #1 based on his GAME performance...

If you're going to base your rankings on performance in games and Vince Young or Matt Leinart aren't numbers 1 and 2 (in whatever order), IMO you and your rankings automatically lose all credibility. Let's see Matt Leinart was something lke 34-2 as a starting QB in college, a Heisman Trophy winner, and won 1 1/2 championships and finished runner up once. Vince Young won the BCS title last year while single-handedly torching the USC defense, and wasn't beaten last year. Kellen Clemens had a good season I'm sure, but he doesn't compare in GAME performance. USC beat Oregon last year. I guess Jaws is the only one who watched game performances of all three guys:rolleyes:

i wasn't arguing, i said parcells has NOT built a cowboys team and taken it to the playoffs.

i never got into his overall coaching ability, greatness or badness of all time - just said the only time we went to the playoffs under parcells was w/his first team he didn't build.

people draw their own conclusions off that.

Fair enough :)

My only point was while I understand he didn't build that particular team, the fact that he was able to take it to the playoffs is just amazing.

you have to look at the credibility of the paper he is using, The Post is right around the same as the Natinal Enquierer in the newspaper world

This is from Jaws' OFFICIAL site

Let's talk about some specific players in this draft, starting with the quarterback position.
When I look at quarterbacks, my job is to project them as how they'll play in the National Football League. When you talk about Jay Cutler, Matt Leinart, Vince Young, Kellen Clemens and Brodie Croyle, they're all terrific college players.
To go to the next level, you have to be special, and I look for those special qualities in those players, those qualities that I think will translate to the NFL.
After all of my evaluation and study, I have Cutler being the best NFL quarterback in five years............

So you are saying that Jaws lied on his own official site? Here lets give you even more to chew on here is what he said AFTER the draft

JAY CUTLER
As I wrote before the draft, I felt that Cutler would become the best of this group. Now he's in a place that is absolutely perfect for his development -- he'll be in a starter in the next two years and in five years from now he'll be an excellent quarterback on a very good football team with a head coach who knows how to coach quarterbacks. When you look at John Elway, Brian Griese and Jake Plummer, you realize that they all had their best seasons with Mike Shanahan as the head coach.
Denver made strides to make another run right now, and that's what the acquisition of wide receiver Javon Walker means.
The Broncos want to win now and they are in position to do so. But they are also going to be busy grooming Cutler, who will be outstanding.
