Video: We've seen Romo deliver plenty of these type of games Dak just had, yet doesn't get the same grief?

This game should have been deja vu for many of us.
As great as the D has played for 3 quarters, I had that same old pit in my stomach as I knew they were gonna let the Eagles continue to score until it came down to who had the ball last. We've seen this same movie before.

Romo has delivered these type of games over the years... bad to mediocre for a few quarters, then ball out in the 4th to win it or score then watch the defense let the opposition walk down the field and win it.
Dak played poorly but didn't put his head down. He stood tall and played with guts. He's a work in progress but the kid has a moxy/clutch gene that very few have, even those with more physical talents.

We deify Romo but seem to forget the numerous games that he had that were carbon copies of tonight.
Remember these?

(Look at these awful INT throws.)

(The "Witten tackling a cheerleader" game.)

Dak has another yr left on his rookie contract. He's frustrating as heck sometimes but let's hope and see if the guy can get better. No, he's not the passer Romo became (and didn't benefit from sitting 4 years behind veterans) but its possible he can tweak some things in his game to become better.

The vitriol around here is ridiculous. The same way we defended Romo from outside critics is the same way some of us are defending Dak from his own fanbase. Sad.

You are correct about Dak and I appreciate your perspective with him. Your recollection about how we responded to Romo's performances in real time, I call into question. He got slaughtered by the fans in the same manner Dak is for a number of years. It was only later in his career that what you are saying rings true. I suspect this will be the case for Dak as well. The "deify" part of your take on Romo certainly didn't happen until he got Dak'd. In real time there was no worshipping of how fragile Romo's body became later in his career. The greatest ability is availability and that wasn't Romo much of his last few years so don't forget that and instead deify him. Deities don't get hurt like that.

Romo was slammed plenty. In fact, people are still slamming him.
He wasn't slammed for that game. He is slammed in general. I'm one of the only people on either board that will bring up his mistakes that game. Most people just complain about the defense not stopping a "one-legged Rodgers", Murray's fumble, Bailey's missed kick, and the refs on Dez's dropped pass, but say Romo wasn't part of the reason the team lost because his stat line looks great.

But I've taken complaints people have with Dak and applied them to Romo's great game:
  • Dink and dunked while GB was stacking the box
  • Fumbled the ball
  • Took 3 bad sacks
  • Needed TWill to get YAC on the short pass, long TD run
  • Threw for under 200 yards.
Dak would have gotten crucified for that performance. It happens here weekly.

I think the difference is that Romo was a great QB so much was expected. Dak is not a great QB, so whenever he throws a TD pass its almost like an overachievement and everyone is thrilled.
I thought Romo was being slammed instead of people having high expectations because he was great?

I can only speak for myself.

I always was a harsh critic of Romo. And i am of Dak too.

The difference between those 2 for me is that Romo had alot more talent but still not enough to be a great QB who could carry a team on his back. But he thought he could. And that resulted in alot of bad plays. That was his biggest weakness.

Dak on the other hand seems to know that he needs a great supporting cast to be successful. I hope he will know that also when he signs a longterm contract with us.

Seriously what are you talking about?! Dak does not get 1/10th of grief of what Romo received during his time in Dallas. Romo was raked over the coals by fans, media, opposing players, opposing coaches, GMs, and media. They clowned on Romo during rankings. It was pathetic how poorly he was treated. Everyday. Every year.
People would see me wearing my Cowboys stuff, and would immediately comment something along the lines of "Romo's sure a choker", or "Homo sucks", or "Chokemo". Or some such blather. And I mean it was constant. I got to where I wouldn't even discuss him. We had a separate place for Romo conversations on the old boards, and couldn't even allow the mention of him w/ bringing up major vitriol and really stupid stuff.

There were definitely a big sect Cowboys fans that didn't like Romo (I had a lot of fellow Cowboys friends who didn't and I always came to his defense) but mostly, it was outside media and other teams fans that derided him and called him a choker or "accident waiting to happen." All of ESPN and SAS, Faulk, Deion, etc.
And yea, the "deify" part did come when Romo hung up the helmet prematurely.

I see a few references to the 2007 NFC Divisional Round game has expectedly popped up for the umpteenth time yet again. Several 'good Romo' observations from that game. A couple 'bad Romo' impressions from that season ender. Standard stuff repeated on the forum over past 11 years.

Like clockwork, very little to anything else is mentioned that helped attributed to the 4-point loss. Very few (if any) remembrances of how the Dallas defense allowed the Giants to drive the field for a touchdown in 42 seconds shortly before the half ended.

7 points. The defense did not keep New York to a field goal and 3 points. Or forced them to punt and limited the Giants to 0 points on that fateful but almost completely forgotten or totally ignored drive. Nope. Touchdown a.k.a. the 4-point winning margin for the eventual Super Bowl champions.

It is a good thing now for Dallas its defense may be improved enough to prevent that sort of thing from repeating. Maybe good for the fans. Possibly good for the franchise and the team. Perhaps good for Prescott.

And then it will come as no surprise some people will continue forgetting or ignoring how a team sometimes helps contribute mightily to losses and only celebrate how the quarterback only wins games despite what he may or may not do on the field.

Go... Cowboys?
People can use that example because it's history and actually happened. People right now are assuming that this defense will not make mistakes in the future that may lose a game and it will be because of Dak if we lose. Dak makes mistakes for sure, but this defense also just had 3 sacks negated by penalties that extended drives and lead to points. Gregory has had some very untimely penalties that cost us points in the Seahawks game and Saints game. The defense gave up back to back under 3.5 minutes TD drives against the Lions in the 4th qtr. that made the GWD necessary or that the defense allowed the 60 yard catch and run to Hopkins in OT that lead to the game winning FG. Or that the team just committed 12 penalties, 11 enforced, against the Eagles. Just like Romo, people focus on the QB mistakes and forget the other ones the rest of the team makes.

Someone pointed out and reminded folks in another thread that during Montana's "The Catch" game, he actually turned the ball over 4 times, 3 INTs and a fumble. I don't recall 9ers fans being upset after the game because the game shouldn't have been that close, of course we didn't have the internet either. People forget all those things when you win, but they will follow you to the grave if you lose.

It's all part of the territory with being the QB, and magnified even more being the QB of America's Team.

Romo was bashed for giving away games usually because he had to do too much carrying the team.

Dak is bashed for not being a prolific passing QB while winning games.

Big difference.

Dak is a winner. He’s just isn’t a great QB. Not sure everyone gets the difference?

But when you come up short his passing deficiency is going to be a big part of the blame much like Romo’s gunslinging was.

In the end winning cures all ills . Dak could end up being a bigger winner than Romo without being as great of QB.

To all those here claiming Romo was heavily criticized by MOST fans. YOU ARE A GOT DAMN LIAR. You Romo saps would ***** whine and moan about Romo needs this or that EVERY FRIGGIN SEASON. His mistakes and gaffes were never his fault. It was the receivers fault. The Oline’s fault. The running backs fault. The coaching. Jerry Jones. The fans. The cheerleaders. The hole in the roof. Anything and anyone but Romo. The lies you clowns tell are sickening. Downright sickening. Romo once threw 5 interceptions in a game we eventually won and was praised for that. Anyone who denies this is a lying coward. Why are we even on this board if we ain’t gonna be realistic?

People need to go back and look at Romo’s performance with the game on the line. And they need to look more closely at his turnover numbers.

They’re being every bit as stupid about Dak’s play as they were about Romo’s. It’s not really a question.

Why anybody thinks popular consensus ever gets anything right is beyond me. Popular consensus is an idiot.

Good stuff.

It would be refreshing if most team sports conversations (and not just about football) could include regularly discussing more than what the most important position on the team did or did not do during a game. Doing so would not simply enrich conversations much more. It would help with more honest assessments of praise and blame. That would allow far greater fairness for not only players like Romo and Prescott but also for their teammates and coaches, who are very often insulated from scapegoating or do not receive enough props for their contributions.

I know that is a pipe dream. Too many media talking heads do not do it nearly enough. The same goes for too many vocal sports fans. Tunnel vision is sports talk's handicap.

5 ints and a fumble...I remember it well. I can't remember the meltdown on this board...but I can guarantee, this place would have to shut down if Dak did the same.

And that was throwing to a prime Witten and Owens.

Dak isn't allowed to have nice things though. You can't pay him and all of the pieces he needs around him.

Lol

That close? I remember the 49ers murdering us in the regular season. I was surprised the Cowboys almost won that game.

Romo great?!? I think he was good. But how could you label a QB great that never got us to the NFC Championship game? Let alone a Superbowl.
