What’s wrong with Cowboys defense?

In 2014 we had a hungry Rolondo that changed the whole defense around with his ferociousness. Our LB's now, outside of Lee, are awful. Lee is the new Romo I guess....one man gang.

Am I the only one who really wants a defense that has some attitude? This soft scheme is as much about attitude as anything.

Just get a few guys who are nasty and mean. They don't have to be reckless like Wilcox, but "I want a kick the crap out you" attitude.

I think Rod's scheme makes it next to impossible for a defender to have that attitude.

There were a few of us who didn’t like it when he left.

Others said whatever, he’s a jag and the sort. A lot of us also knew that was a huge damned loss. I said it at the time that he left, there were stretches last season where he was our best DL

There's a lot of that, they're "great players" coming in, "JAG's" on their way out.

It's both disheartening and yet easy to see that the replacements they brought in have failed miserably.

No you're not. Defense is about attitude, but when you're not good enough it's hard to act that way, and then you commit penalties because of it. When Ro came on board that season he alone completely changed the defenses attitude. Remember that Seattle game? I miss that!

This article is referenced in the daily tweets thread, but felt it was worthy of having its own thread.

There's a lot of quality information contained here and it shows that there's plenty going wrong defensively in Dallas:

61.

The amount of points the Dallas Cowboys have scored in the last two weeks.

848.

The amount of yards the Cowboys’ offense accumulated against the Los Angeles Rams and Green Bay Packers.

105.2

Dak Prescott’s QB rating in his last two outings.

2.

The number of losses the Cowboys have in those two games.

It’s obvious to even the casual viewer that the Cowboys’ offense hasn’t been the problem lately — it’s the defense. Under Football Outsiders’ DVOA system, the Cowboys rank 23rd in pass defense, 32nd in run defense, and 29th in overall defense this season — meaning the Cowboys’ defense has been below-average thus far. Those struggles have been exacerbated the last two games.

Why?

Glad you asked.

This fan sees two defensive personnel changes that should happen immediately. Heath and Jaylon Smith need to sit, and Woods and Hitchens need to start (with Lee's return).

The rest is the fault of some poor coaching.
That sucking sound is the defense!! I believe that the DL can be fixed but the LBers are a large hole in the front 7. The secondary is a major problem with the coaching staff. That is they do not put the secondary in a position to make plays! The coaching staff depends on talent alone to win and in the modern NFL that will not work. The secondary needs a new plan!

If your whole defense is reliant on a guy who's frequently hurt, you have problems.

Can you point out an NFL team that doesn't give up 7 more points per game when their best defensive player is out?

I'm hoping that having Lee, Hitchens, and Wilson out there can help to stabilize the linebacker group.

But, you know me, I've often been accused of being overly optimistic...

Exactly. That exact game comes to mind whenever I think about the effect attitude has on defense.

So you admit clowns like Heath and Paea are nothing but scrubs?

Playing GM... I would call the Saints about Kenny Vaccaro and the 49ers about Eric Reid. They are both pending free agents and neither team is a contender. Would be willing to send a conditional pick for either of those players.

And before I hear how much Vaccaro hasn't done anything, understand this; Heath is killing us. Vaccaro is twice the athlete is and 3 times the football player. Plus, he's a pending free agent so if he doesn't pan out, we simply move on in the off-season. We might even get a comp pick out of it.

Vaccaro, age 26, $5.6M cap hit (technically about 3/4th of that hit since the season is a quarter done)
Reid, age 25, $5.6M cap hit

Then, I call the following teams: the Colts and the Browns to inquire about Jonathan Hankins and Danny Shelton. This will probably be a costly trade but the phone calls are free. If they want too much, no trade.

Hankins, age 25 (6'2", 320 lbs) $3M cap hit, signed through 2019 and it looks like he has another $7M guaranteed.
Shelton, age 24 (6'2", 339 lbs) $1.49M cap hit, signed through 2018. Also, the option to pick up his 5th year in 2019.

Last, I sound like a broken record, but I sign Daryl Washington to a low-risk, 2-year deal. With the 2nd year being respectable but it would be a team option. The team is protected but there is serious motivation for Washington to perform.

That would take almost all of our $9M in cap room but we would have added three pieces to the defense. It would send a message that no one's job is safe and I feel solves three glaring problems.

LDE Demarcus Lawrence
1TECH Jonathan Hankins (David Irving on passing downs)
3TECH Maliek Collins
RDE Tyrone Crawford/Taco Charlton

SAM Daryl Washington
MIKE Anthony HItchens (bring Jaylon along slowly)
WILL Sean Lee

LCB Orlando Scandrick
RCB Jourdan Lewis
NB Anthony Brown/Chidobe Awuzie/Byron Jones (I would phase out Anthony Brown unless his play improves soon)

SS Byron Jones/Xavier Woods
FS Kenny Vaccaro/Xavier Woods

Not big names but I feel it gives the defense a fighting chance.

You were the most accurate poster on here. Then you backed clowns like Heath and Paea. A stain for sure. But knowing you, you wont make the same mistake again.

Fully agree on the change of those two position players.

To me the most interesting development over the coming week will be if those changes actually occur.

Where are you going with the "7 points" thing? This team gave up 42 to the Broncos with Lee.

For the third time, this is the question:

Can you point out an NFL team that doesn't give up 7 more points per game when their best defensive player is out?
