The reason you trade for him is because you then enjoy exclusive rights for negotiations. If you don't do that and you wait till he hits FA, that might be next year but it's more likely that it will be two years from now or never. If you have exclusivity, then you can try to hammer out a deal without his agent constantly bringing in other bidders to drive up the price.

According to former NFL agent Joel Corry, who writes about NFL contracts for CBS Sports, that $30 million is spread out over five years for salary cap purposes but is paid to Wentz entirely in 2020.

That $30 million would be spread out over five years at $6 million per year from 2020 through 2024.

https://www.nbcsports.com/philadelp...ng to Yates, the deal,and $21 million in 2024.

No reasonable person, who has done any amount of research would contend that the years don't matter and that this was simply a 4 year deal. That's just a straight up lie. This article flatly states that it is not just a 4 year deal and that the additional years matter because you can spread the money out and make it manageable.

Of course it matters to the team to be able to spread out over 5 years, but that's how payments are made, not the length of the contract extension.

Like I mentioned earlier, if a person signs a contract to rent an apartment for 12 months, and has to make a down payment a month before the lease starts, that doesn't make the lease a 13 month lease. It is still a 12 month lease, but with payments spread over 13 months.

I'm saying instead of a long term deal he plays on the tag in year 1, then possibly year 2. Nothing definitive there. There are other options.
So, being pro-"kick the can down the road" 2 seasons in a row... nothing definitive there. I'll agree with you about one thing, there are oter options.

The question wasn't simply why Dallas would want 5 years, it was why they would want 5 years if they weren't sold on Dak. And that question was a response to another poster who suggested that the Cowboys wanting 5 years somehow indicated the Cowboys weren't sold on Dak.
Of course. I realize that exactly.
And I explained why, from Dallas' perspective, there were other factors of 5 vs 4 above and beyond them just being sold on Dak one way or the other.
Not sure why have to explain this.
I was just answering a guy's question.

He didn't ask a question, he made a statement ("I never figured that one out"). And what he was saying he never figured out had nothing to do with the benefit to the team of having a 5 year contract over a 4 year contract - I think he knows that. What he was saying he never figured out was the argument that the Cowboys wanting an extra year somehow means that the Cowboys aren't sold on Dak.

Yep, don't get the furor over not having him signed long term. He's not going to show up for 31.4M this season and 38M next, if they tag him back to back?

The one possible fly in the ointment on that is the unknown effect on the cap if this season is altered.

I would have stopped all negotiations after tagging him with an agreement to re-visit this after this season.
My only concern is whether it changes his game. Dak seemed hesitant to run at times last year, and I don’t know if that had to do with him waiting on a big pay day or coaching.

Unfortunately for you, not all opinions are created equal. But thanks for offering one.

I think what happened to Alex Smith had a lot to do with that. Anyone that watches his injury and the aftermath would think twice about risking a lucrative career. And it was a freak injury, like Tua's, just get your body wrong with 600lbs hanging onto you and that could be it.

If y'all haven't watched that ESPN :60 on Alex Smith, it's a hell of an hour. There were several times that I could not stop from wincing from the visuals and I am definitely in his corner on coming back but that's a long shot. I always liked him because of how he handled himself through adversity and 5 OCs in his first 5 years but new respect after watching that.

I really liked Smith coming out of Utah. That's a great example of a young QB going to the worst situation you can think of through the draft. San Fran was flat horrible at that time and nobody, but nobody was going to give any QB a chance after Montana and Young.

Bad Situation......
