What scares me is the amount of guaranteed money being offered. What if he just doesn't click under the McCarthy plan? What if his head swells to unmanageable proportions and he just ends up not working out. That guaranteed money is gone. And it could've helped the team in so many other positions. Let him play under the tag and let's see what he can do under McCarthy's scheme with our freight train load of talent then make him an offer next year.

...Decisions...decisions!!!..It's more about the years than the money with Dak...He wants to be free to negotiate his contract in a few years when all the TV and other medium revenue monies $$$ kick in. He's holding the cards still ...IMO. He could play on the Franchise tag for a couple of seasons (make some good money) (unless he's injured-that is a risk!)...Jerry opened with a 6 year deal/Dak with a 3...now I think it's Jerry with a 5 year deal and Dak up to a 4: I'm not sure on the cash....play balll!!!:star:

I'm not surprised to see many of the 63 votes for "Let Dak play on franchise tag; Start Dalton if Dak holds out" were hard-core Romoholics on the old Cowboys board.

The smart move would be to trade him for a 1 and a 4, or even 2 2's.
Dak was a 4th , so getting a 1 and a 4 would be a good deal.'
That would give cowboys 2 # 1's and 2 # 4's to use to get a top qb in the draft. and more money for defense for 4 years.

Nah, I was all for supporting Dak and hoping he'd get a 4 year deal..but then the idea got floated around that the cap might be reduced based on attendance of games being hurt by COVID...soo now I'd be wary of signing anyone to that much long term without knowing how the cap will be reduced or not. Honestly, if he agreed to 33-34 now for 3-4 years, I'd be cool with it no sweat...It's just that Salary cap based on fan attendance thing that had me vote for have him play on the tag this year.

Yeah, I think he's asking for more than he's currently worth, and I don't blame him for asking it. I don't think anyone but Mahomes is worth what Dak's reportedly asking. But I don't blame the Cowboys either. But the situation is up in the air.

110+ is higher than them. At David Moore said today they guaranteed offer now tops any player--including goof and Wentz.
Also, Goff and Wentz got extensions which amounted to a total of 5 years control, not 4

Their last year is 2024. On a 5 year deal, so would Dak's. Dallas lines up with Goff and Wentz, but using new contract vs and extension.
Which is why I said if they get to 110 that would be higher.

Your take on Goff and Wentz's extensions is inaccurate. They were both already under team control through 2020 from their rookie deals. Remember, their rookie deals were different than Dak's because as 1st round draft picks their rookie deals had a 5th year team option. The extension only added 4 additional years.

Good points, bro.

That was exactly my point regarding Goff and Wentz. Already under control and got 4 year extensions in addition to what they still had... so they would expire after 2024 season.

Dak only had an original 4 year deal. His expired, so instead of adding onto to anything, he just gets a new deal.

A 5 year deal for Dak would take him also out thru 2024, just like his classmates, but via new contract vs extension.

Instead, he wants to get to the open market a year before them...after 2023

My point was that a 5 year deal lines him up with his 1st round classmates
But Wentz get 32/yr and the universally agreed to be overpaid Goff gets 33.5/yr....

Dak will get 35ish with slightly more guaranteed.
Good for him

No, the extension just added 4 years to Wentz and Goff's contract. They still had 2 years left on their rookie deals. Of course, because they got a signing bonus up front they did get some money up front, which, as you indicated, helped the team spread the cap hit over 6 years rather than just the 4 year extension period, but that's a benefit on the team side. From the player's standpoint the extension just added 4 years of team control above what their rookie contract called for.

This is wrong. Look at the contract. Of course it helped. You don't think that Dak is also going to get a significant amount of money up front? The team is going to have to account for that in two fewer years. This is not about the players. You have a hardcap. obviously it is much more beneficial to have 6 years, rather then 4 years, to spread that money over. This is about how you structure a contract in order to manage your cap, over time.

They aren't the same deal from the team standpoint, but they are from the player standpoint. For the player 4 years is 4 years. The difference is that the Eagles and Rams were more agressive than the Cowboys and signed their players with life still on the contract, and that allowed them flexibility with the salary cap. The Cowboys did not, they aren't in the same position to spread the cap hit over a longer time period.

That said, I don't blame the Cowboys for trying to get the best deal they can, and trying to structure things in a way that benefits the team. The team has its interest, and the player has his, and that's why they have to negotiate.

I think the difference is that each of those players were 1st round picks with a 5th year option, where the teams were able to work with them. The Cowboys wanted to resign Dak but he elected not to do that. Now, if you are saying that the Cowboys didn't offer enough money, then that's opinion. We don't know exactly what Dak would have taken to sign and we don't know what exactly was offered.

But I do agree, it's a negotiation.

I answered that. I have no opinion on whether Dak should sign or not sign the deal. I think he should do whatever he believes is in his best interest. I hope they come to an agreement and aren't stuck with a QB playing on the tag.

As do I but if I'm the team, I'm not giving a 4 year deal for max money. That's just bad business IMO.
