What impact will Buehler actually have?

Without reading all responses, I hope only impact he has is getting us a draft pick next year.

I don't think anyone is thinking that he'll be playing at a particular position. Its other ST coverage units (punts) that he may be able to handle if he can hit....which it seems he can.

let's see. put a backup linebacker or 3rd TE out there or our, oh so valuable to use up a roster spot on him, kickoff specialist. Come on. He's not getting a sniff on the punt coverage team.

You're missing the point. If we keep Buehler active, that's one less "backup linebacker," "third tight end," etc., who will be active. So it might not be between Buehler and a minor backup for that spot, it could be between Buehler and a starter or key backup. Exactly how much do you want our "oh-so-valuable" starters playing on special teams?

And again, why would Joe D be wasting his time working Buehler on the punt coverage team, if it's not even a remote possibillity?

id like to see him hold.

also he has the speed to actually prevent a runback which is valueble.we all know folk is money from 20-50 but is 4 of 7 from 50+ which is about right for most kickers...but imagine beating philly by 1 on a 57 yarder from david, if that were to happen there would be no more debate on whether or not he is worth it.

but the true x factor will be if its easier to cover kick offs with the new wedge rule.

also with the equal men onside kick rule having him out there with folk isnt a liability if they squib and the added advantage of the other team not knowing whos gonna kick where could be huge...even if we get in that situation once this year and we get the ball back because of it and win the game i think its worth it...but who knows its alot of ifs but i believe the potential is more than alot of people are willing to admit.

If it's a 7th linebacker that gets gone then I'm ok but it's awfully hard to specify what player lost his position because we kept Buehler. I agree that this has been a concern for us for the last few years and I hope that he is the answer. Only time will tell I guess.

well think about it

the extra roster spot Buehler keeps usually will go to a player who does nothing but contribute on special teams anyways, let's not act like keeping Buehler means we cut Orlando Scandrick

and in addition to kicking off, Buehler will be chasing the ball down, attempting to make the tackle too, he's a former safety with safety measurables, and he's working as a coverage guy on punt returns as well

this is a different situation than just keeping 2 roster spots for guys who will do nothing but kick the ball through uprights and kick off

That "point" is overplayed. If he is valuable enough to be on the gameday roster then we are damn sure going to want him to act like a kicker -- his job is not to run down and stick his nose in tackles. He will be hanging out around the 50 as a last line of defense. He still is a kicker and you don't want your kicker pretending he is one of the grown ups

that may be the case for a string-bean kickoff specialist, but Buehler is a big dude, he's bigger than Marion Barber, cripes

and don't bring up Sebastian Janikowski as a defense, because he's just a tub of lard, not an athlete like Buehler

Talking about it and doing it are two different things. Like I indicated before, when I hear it from DeCamillis and he's out there on the field proving it, I'll believe it.

The "actual NFL coaches" also suggested we would have DeAngelo Smith try CB, that doesn't mean he's going to march out there and be an effective fifth or sixth CB tomorrow. Patrick Crayton and Isaiah Stanback played QB at a high level in college, should we have them as our third string on a regular basis?

 you can do better than casting doubt

...I could see Buehler being used on is long FGs outside of Folk's range.

If we are going into halftime with a few seconds left on a 59 yard FG I may be tempted to let Buehler take a shot at that distance dependent on what he has shown that day in pregame warm ups.

Alot of things have to align for that shot, but it would be another one of the those "special" Parcells situations we could do something about with this kicker.

CZ is great. We have posters who know more about pass rushing than Wade Phillips and more about special teams than Joe Decamillis.

I'm glad you can see the future. And a skins fan talking about wasted draft picks is just about the sweetest irony I can imagine. :lmao2:

Hey, hey, hey.. the last thing we need is some Commanders fans telling us we waste draft picks!

I mean we do waste draft picks but still, a Commanders fan? How dare you sir. :D

Could you at least try to be an interesting troll? Or are you already maxed out?

It doesn't matter if he is tough or not. He's a kicker and he is not used to the sort of violent contact that he'll experience in the NFL - you think because he played safety in community college that he can tackle at this level? If his value is putting the ball in the end zone, the last thing you want is him trying to be all macho and **** and getting himself hurt.

He is a kickoff specialist and nothing more. Folks need to get that into their heads.

I'm pretty sure a lot of folks had the same attitude toward that Olympic sprinter who had never played big time football - you know the one they just inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame, Bullet Bob Hayes.

It's the same attitude possessed by draft snobs: the people I trust (the media 'experts') haven't highly rated it so it is not something to consider as possible. Just a waste of time.

A lot of time saved, but a lot of value sometimes lost.

:)

Field position is huge. Starting at the 20 as opposed to the 30-40 is major. Your offense gets it back in better FP as well if you can force a 3 and out. The Panthers use 2 kickers and it greatly inproved their FP.

Sorry, I should have greater discretion. :D

Every team wastes some draft picks.

Interesting thread. We really are blessed with some great posters here.

I see no problem letting Superman play STs if he can do it. If he gets enough kicks into the EZ then no one is going to complain. Wait a minute. No one reasonable will complain.

I figure he will have cured cancer by week six

he says he'll have that wrapped up by the end of preseason

I think he'll be moving on towards time travel by week six
