What is going on with our Defensive Tackles?

IMO our problem is we don't value the position enough . And when we have drafted DL they have either been the smaller/quick twitch type line man vs the Double team eating type. Bohanna being the exception. But how many years have we ignored the position In the draft and signed the JAG's in FA? Way too many years IMO.
I agree, the position does not seem like a priority.

Here is my problem with what the Cowboys do. You can win either with size and Power, or speed and strength.
Both ways will work.

If you use size and strength on the DL, then your DE's need to get the sacks, and your LB's can use speed, more than size and strength.
If you use speed on the DL, then you need bigger LB's to be able to stack and shed because it is easy to wash out the DT's, and you know that your bigger IOL will eventually wear them out.

Get bigger but slower, and OC's go fast. Get faster and smaller, and OC's run on you. You need freaks who are bigger/stronger, and faster.

DQ's scheme seems to prefer the faster guys because it is passing that usually beats a team. They have just decided to accept that teams will run on them. They just don't have the talent to flip from a defend the pass to a defend the run team, IMO. They utilize a SS (Kearse) as an undersized Sam that covers the TE and helps in run defense, and swap the position with DWilson who also jumps in and out of a hybrid SS/Sam role.

So if you were an OC, what would you do to beat the Cowboys?
I would run on the smaller DT's, and after getting an initial move out of the DL, try to get my OL to the second level.
And I would throw shorter, quicker release passes with the occasional screen put in. When they adjust to stop the shorter routes, take my shots deep.

This is what you are seeing teams do to Dallas for the last few weeks. Dallas is just outscoring them. The bottom teams just don't have the talent to keep doing this all game long and they keep making mistakes. Which team that we play in the playoffs is going to stick to the run and just run it down the throats of Dallas? If Dallas had a thumping MLB, he could make up for lots of the lack of size on the DL. If Dallas had more size on the DL, then their LB's would be even better than they currently are -- especially if they could get a player that could allow Parsons to truly play either line or LB, which is only possible if you have a DL that can do the same or a LB that can do the other things Parsons is needed to do.

I really do like the scheme and personnel of the Dallas D except for DL and MLB. They have the DE's, they have Parsons and Clark which are dynamic with their speed. They have very good safety and CB play when everyone is healthy. They really just need one unique hard to find MLB and a talented DT or two to become elite, IMO. Then stop stunting yourself out of the play.
Wow,
This poster must-have a coaching background
Very nice and appreciated insights.
Thanks

Nothing is wrong until we once again lose in the playoffs because we can't stop the run.

But even if that happens, what is wrong? Life goes on: next year the draft, ota's, training camp, preseason, all starts at the same time regardless.

I had such high hopes for this group going into the season.

We had talent, ability, improvement and growth from previous seasons.

Osi and Gallimore looked posed to have break out seasons.

Now they are little more than speed bumps to the opposition.

I mean things are so bad that we had to make a mid season trade for Hankins.

Is it their positional coaching being poor ? Injuries ?

I am not good at watching game tape and grading out players, but I am just curious if anyone here has any ideas on what ails

this group of players?

Hankins injury to me is a big reason that our run defense and pass rush has degressed.
We didnt do anything to replace him.

As a 1T we only have Bohana and he isnt good at all.

Most of what I’d noticed was him mostly at 3t after they picked up Hankins. With the injury, guessing they didn’t have much of a choice. Bohana is looking to be a wash!
Bo is a backup. Which is mostly what you get in the 6th.
Hankins completely changed our D. And he's just good, not great.

I'm not comprehending your thought process here.

This is a discussion thread. You don't appear to be interested in discussion, hey?

With where this team is situated I don’t think a draft pick is a fast enough solution. We need to invest in a free agent 1T while we have an open “Super Bowl window”. As it is it’s a two years too late.

I never thought Gallinore would be a great run stuffer but I thought he'd be a better pass rusher. I was dead wrong. As for run support, we just have to hope Bo and Hankins lock in when it counts. Similar to how the Colts turned up their run d in 2006 playoffs after getting destroyed all year

Gallimore has been shown to be the most overrated player on the roster this season. He has never had good anchor and never been a plus run stopper. He either wins his gap clean off the snap or he gets washed. It's been that way since he started.

Nate Newton said with Bohanna is all about want and will, and that he has the size to be that dude in middle but it’s about how much he wants it. Nate said that very disappointingly.

min regards to Gallimore, I jsut never saw the hype. I really don’t think he’s better antuan woods. I’m positive I’ve seen Woods make more splash plays in the game

Gallimore is Maliek Collins redux.

I seen Collins make make more plays than Gallimore. Collins looked better in that game against Houston’s few weeks ago than I’ve ever seen Gallimore look. I’ve only seen Gallimore look good once and that was the blowout against Washington

what mess this team is with all the post here and al over SM, being 6-10hurts with one to go, what ever will we do..lol

oh wait, somehow, we have a 7-1 record against at or above 500 teams, beat plenty of playoff eligible teams., and are actually 12-4 even if the posts think we are so weak in every aspect, not sure how we survived this far.

all teams have strengths and weaknesses, just find ways to coach around them.. can't fix every position overnight. This was a mess in 2020 so DQ came in in 2021 and got us on track quickly and made further changes and the first 7 games had top defense in this league that Injuries and fatigue have knocked it down a step.

Im sure they will address it further this offseason, only so many holes you can fill at one time. i believe they replaced like 17 players last offseason.
