What is Romo's problem?

I'm going try and apply some logic to this beyond the numbers of the game today.
Tracking back on the Romo timeline.

Signs a contract.

*Has surgery which keeps him from getting crucial practice reps during off-season.

*Reports to camp over weight and out of shape.

*1st team offense gets barely 2 quarters together during the preseason. Roughly 8 quarters and 10 all together in live action.

*Suffers badly bruised ribs, which can and will affect throwing, especially if they get nicked. Pretty sure that occurred today.

Add it all together a recipe for a slow inconsistent start. Not excuses here, just logic.

Can't argue with anything you wrote.

So dez has a back injury and that's why he took himself out on the critical drive at the end.

Hope he is ok

mediocre pass protection? the pass protection was fine

the chiefs decided the blitz and romo couldnt figure out a way to beat the blitz...just like he couldnt against the skins in week 17...

This is a good reference to Wk 17. Until this team learns how to beat the blitz with screens, draws etc., Romo can expect to see a lot of that.

I agree with this in part but something happened in the second half to him physically. The only way he doesn't go downfield at all is he can't. He couldn't even complete short passes and he's never played that poorly unless injured.

This game was a microcosm of the Romo era. Looks great in the beginning. No running game. And when the game on the line Romo and the DEFENSE let the team down.. this one ain't solely on romo.. even though he should of been picked twice the final drive..

So when he all day to throw it no was open that is called no separation. I wish I had the all 22. What else could it be then?

Maybe that he didn't play that good??

I didn't think the pass protection was all that bad. They've been worse.

that's an absolute FACT Sarge....it was SOLID....especially in the 4th qtr. when he misfired on all those short passes. He looked horrible in the 4th....just a train wreck. Almost hope he's still hurt so there's an explanation.

no DOUBT about it....it's Groundhog Day....over and over and OVER again. JJ has the patience of JOB but in the end it's losing football and a virtually unwatchable offense. Completely impotent

Romo's problem is that he's Tony Romo. He's not Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. Romo is a great quarterback that can win when he has support from his team. He can't win when the starting running back gets all of 25 yards on the ground, or when the defense can't get off the field on 3rd and 10 and 3rd and 15. No, this wasn't Romo's best showing by any stretch of the imagination. But he had lots of company in this department today.

I wonder if Orton wins this game if he comes in at halftime. It was obvious to my eyes that Romo was less than 100%...maybe a lot less. I'm a Romo fan but if he was hurt and stayed in for a subpar performance as a result, then the loss is on him.

Not defending his 4th quarter play today in any way, shape, or form. But, out of curiosity....when you guys are watching the games, believing as you do about Romo's play with the game on the line late, and the stat flashes about him having the highest 4th quarter QB rating in the history of ever in the NFL..what exactly goes through your minds? Do you just not see that stuff? Or do you mentally correct it to some sort of 'yeah, but he can't get it done when it matters' argument that somehow lets you reconcile the facts with your own interpretation of reality?

If Romo starts off next week being as inaccurate as he was in the 4th quarter today, then I think Garrett must insert Orton. Something was off with Tony late in the game, whether its physical or mental. or both.

I think it's an interesting metric, but then again I find the fact that Chad Pennington has the highest completion percentage in NFL history interesting as well. Aaron Rodgers is like 0-17 in 4th quarter comeback attempts against teams with winning records is also an interesting one.

I'm not sure any of those metrics by themselves tell us much.

Too bad we don't have an option to replace JG that easily.

The "problem" is simple: we have a mediocre football team. We aren't great, we don't suck, we're just...average.

Romo took a painkilling injection at halftime, but isn't using the discomfort as an excuse for his poor finish. Of course he won't, but to me it looked like a few balls sailed on him.
