I think Wade is doing at present- an average job.
Unlike so many on this board who have been ready to run Wade out of town, I think the "fault" of poor performance lies on the players' shoulders.
I have yet to hear a player say... past or present... they don't like playing or performing for Wade. Now for different reasons that may be true. If a coach doesn't ask for full effort from everyone... you can have problems.
I think this Cowboys team is different in the sense that I always feel like they "want to" do well, yet don't. It may be a lack of inner confidence or the spotlight... but I think that worm can turn quickly with some victories.
I think we're closer than most people think to being a very very good team, and I think Wade's D (overaggression, big hit penalties) while not there yet is very close to being very very good.
Right now they are making up for lack of poise with intensity and that will rear it's ugly head in crunchtime, and it has time and time again. It's like microwaving something to heat it up faster... you will have mixed results with the taste, correct?
I might be in the minority, but I think this specific issue has peaked and is now on the slide beginning with the stand in OT vs KC. The D is close very, very close to being very good to excellent. I like the Defense FA acquisitions this season alot and those are Wade's guys. He's building something here, why everyone wants to burn it so quickly speaks more to our fanbase's lowered expectations of what this team can be than what is really going on in each game.
I think the offense has battled alot of injuries early.... and I don't care for Garrett's tinkering with the offense week to week. Pair it back a little Red, and we'd be ok.
I ask my Cowboys brethren for just a bit more patience and I think we might be ok and at the end of the season people may think differently of Wade Phillips than present. I wasn't thrilled with Wade's hire to begin with but I understood it. Believe it or not, I actually like Wade more now than I did when we were 13-3. I see what he's trying to accomplish and respect the way he treats his players.
Getting back to my point about the rapport Wade has with his players: it may pay dividends when the Cowboys start
a) playing slightly more poised football and
b) realize that Wade's "construction project" has to be completed on time or everyone's job is at stake.
One thing I know is a problem for the Cowboys but I can't blame Wade for necessarily: the star system at work in Dallas- contracts over performance. That is Jerry's fault. A coach should be able to play who performs best, not to validate a trade or draft selection. And yes I'm specifically thinking of the Roy11 deal. Austin needs to play the #1 role as his rapport with the QB is far beyond anything we've seen from Roy. And if that means Roy sits, then Roy sits until he contributes something on the field.
