As a kid in the 90s during the dynasty, they were as dominant as the college team here, and being a kid I thought any team that could win that much was awesome lol. And my mother grew up in Arkansas so the games were on every week during the season in the house, seemed only natural

Living in TX and the Cowboys always being cheer at in the house by family. Just sort of wore on me. Sadly, I missed most of the glory 90's and have only been subject to the downfall just after that.

It was around 1974 and 1975 . I was slow to get into sports. All the kids would ask me my favorite football team. Never really had an answer. I started watching the games and the Cowboys were the one team that hit me. I was always a fan of TV Westerns and that plus the players got me hooked. The main one being Roger Staubach. I loved everything about the team. You had Texas Stadium and the hole in the roof, Coach Landry, the Cheerleaders. the team had everything. Plus the team was very successful. I grew up in NC so we got the Cowboy games quite regularly back then. If you had no team back then you would probably chose the Cowboys, Steelers, Raiders or Dolphins. Of course in NC back in the 70's it was Deadskin territory. I was always outnumbered in school. I count 1975 as the year I became a fan because that's when I started following them regularly. And when they lost in the SB it began my hatred of the Steelers. lol A great time to be a fan. Every year we expected to be in the playoffs. Quite a difference from today.

CowboysZone DIEHARD Fan
The quick answer was my dad - he was a diehard Cowboy's fan. The longer answer was Roger Stabach.

He was an original All-American guy. From his exploits at the Naval Academy to his military service to his never-say-die attitude, he was a Captain America- type figure.

However, it was his response to the Clint "Mad Bomber" Longly sucker punch that sealed it for me. He was a fighter.

I was watching SB V with my Dad. It was the star on the helmet and those blue jerseys.

Started collecting their cards after that...Chuck Howley...Mel Renfro...Lee Roy Jordan...Cornell Green...

I’ve got to go. My eyes are getting misty.

Born and raised in Fort Worth (Kelvin Garmon and, later, Lance Dunbar went to my High School). It was plain understood who our team was from birth. It's like asking any North Korean who their favorite leader is...

The influence from my father( pic in avatar) and my uncle who played , had season tickets and took me to my first Cowboy games as a kid at the Cotton Bowl.

I've never known life without football and the Dallas Cowboys.

Roger, the Star and a deck of cards with the cheerleaders on them :flagwave:
For me personally, it was the same as the first 2 reasons you mentioned here.

Additionally, being raised in Memphis, TN in the 70s ad no local team influence to speak of, the only 2 winning national brands marketed effectively at the time were Pittsburgh and Dallas.

These 2 options left me with a 50/50 choice of Pittsburgh and Dallas.

My personal preference was Landry, Roger and "that star on their helmet" over Noll, Terry and their one sided helmet.

Interesting to note that to this day, there still exists a 50/50 divide of Pitt and Dallas fans in the Memphis and surrounding area market.

The 1970s influence of my generation has effectively remained in place for these 2 fan bases.

The addition of the Tennessee Titan franchise has had no significant impact on fan loyalty to these 2 franchises.

I lived about a half a mile from where they had their practice facility (off Forest and Abrams near LBJ for anyone else reading from or familiar with Dallas). As a result, I grew up with the players kids (the Liscio;s, Mel Renfros, Robert Newhouse, etc, etc), and several players lived on my street). We could go knock on their door and the wives were always nice and had signed photographs of the players ready to give out (kicking myself for not holding onto these).

We used to go watch the team practice from the balcony of a hotel next to the practice field or when the hotel ran us off, we'd stand on egg crates so we could look over the fence. We'd dig through the dumpster and find used pads, shirts and all kinds of stuff, then hang around outside to try and talk to or get autographs from the players on their way home.

The practice facilities have come a LONG way from this:

Landry coached and pretty much won every season from the time I started being a fan at 5 years old until I graduated from high school. Everyone I grew up with were rabid Cowboy fans and Landry, et al spoiled us rotten. The team was like an extended family and they'll always have my heart, I'll never be a fan of any other team and no other team in any other sport comes remotely close to the ridiculous level of attachment I have to the Cowboys, its really strange when I think about it.
Thanks for sharing this personal history along with these pics. Great stuff.
