I think think the point is, Steinback was NOT a Jerry pick, as you suggested he was. Jerry wants to look like a football genius, yes, but I'm positive that he worries about winning and many other things a heck of a lot more than how he'll be perceived if a player selected in the fourth round gets cut.

I think you are absolutely wrong there. Imagine means SO much to Jerry.

Parcells was the guy who cut bait on players. Jerry was never good at that -- it took Bill getting here for picks to have to show something to stay on the roster and for vets who were on the way down to get run out of town.

This was a "look how smart we are pick" -- He gets 3 years minimum. Any pick like this that is widely criticized is one that Jerry gives the player a long time to work out.
This was a "our head scout fell in love with the player" pick. If he turns out he turns out. If not, our head scout's reputation takes a hit.

This has nothing to do with Jerry. As far as evaluating talent and the war room goes, Jeff is in complete control.

Saying this was a Jerry pick was just a head scratcher.

The bottom of the roster churned before Bill got here, while Bill was here, and will after Bill. If Miles Austin or Sam Hurd wouldn't have showed as much as they did, Green wouldn't have been cut. That's not going to change without Bill.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Jones has caught all kinds of criticism for NOT listening to his scouts, now he does and it is still on him.

I will say this. I certainly hope people do give Ireland the appropriate credit for this choice, good or bad. The first few rounds belong to the big decision makers. Truly great drafts are made on day two and that is the realm of the scouting director.

Glenn
TO
Crayton
Steinbach
Austin
Hurd

It's highly unlikely both TO and Glenn are here in 08 and that has a huge impact on which of the other WR's stick this year. Add to that Crayton being an unrestricted FA after this year. Bottom line, I think it makes it harder for a total project to make the roster. If either Austin or Hurd show any signs of not advancing, it's one of them that doesn't make it.

Howmany do they keep?

I expect to see 5 to 6 WR make the team but it is way too soon to predict who the 6 may be. Wait until you see them in camp and who produces the best. Other than TO, Glenn and Crayton I think this will be a good battle for the remaining spots.

We will keep Crayton and he'll get his money next year. I can't see the TO-T. Glenn combo lasting past this year. One of em will be gone next year, IMO. Especially if Crayton is consistent again this year, remember this is really only his third year playin WR, he will stay and one of the vets will go. Essentially takin their money slot, probably costing us a lil less.

I have to agree with you there; we will have to keep one of them to have the vetaran presence in the corps, but besides that we have alot of talent at this position and they are young... Crayton isn't the youngest guy, but he really hasn't had much time at the 1 or 2 spots, and the recievers behind him are still talents and not much else.

You left out Wayne McGarrity....Just kidding...those names just brought back some tough times though.....Damon Hodge had a pretty good game against the Giants one year...Like 4 rec for 64 yards or something. But he never got a chance after that it seemed...Hey what about Bashir Yamini?
Beasley Reece...

I'm sorry, but your list is incorrect.

Stanback hasn't played WR since his Freshman year, in college.

Thats right folks. He's not a WR. He's a QB.

To think that this kid [who is currently injured, and can't run] can just walk on and take the # 4 spot on our WR corps, is just insane.

I'll be surprised if Stanback even makes the squad.

BTW, we'll probably keep only 5 WR's, not 6.

Here is the list...

Glenn
TO
Crayton
Austin
Hurd

We'll keep them all close. TO could blow up. Glenn could blow up or hurt his "knee" again. We are tedious at the position to say the least, not to mention old. We need all those guys just for us to make it through the 2007 season in one piece.

Crayton will be a starter at some point during this season, that's the one guess I will have. Even if he doesn't need to be, I think we have to make him one at some point just to see what we truly have in him before he slips out of our fingers next season. So my guess is that ultimately will move Glenn down a notch. Or Glenn he gets injured (again) this is what it could look like before too long here..

TO
Crayton
Hurd/Austin

And as long as we have Witten, I'm dandy with this lineup. Crayton, Hurd and Austin could and should beable to hold down the fort with the rest of it. The great thing with having a guy like TO is that defenses can very seldomly entirely take him out of any game. With Witten and TO, we're as good as Irvin/Novacek, IF we can get an Aikman out of Romo.

I'm one of the people who thinks Stanback is a near lock. That doesn't mean that I assume he'll play better in training camp than each and every WR who doesn't make the team.

People can say that Stanback was only Ireland's pick, and act as if Jerry had no opinion on Stanback, but that's not credible.

Jerry isn't some passive observer on draft day; Jerry is fully invested. Jerry doesn't use an early 4th round pick on a player without being enthusiastic about the player. If Jerry isn't on board with that draft pick, the draft pick isn't going to happen.

Make no mistake about it: Jerry was sold on Stanback. Ireland may have sold Jerry on Stanback, but Jerry was sold on Stanback. Otherwise, that pick doesn't happen.

How many recievers will we keep if they play special teams? 6 is the max?

I'll be a bit different here:

1. TO
2. TG
3. Austin
4. Stanback
5. Richardson
6. Crayton

Crayton's potential is well known in year 5 and we need him if we expect to go deep into the playoffs. Richardson knows how to be a receiver and will stick. Austin will stay because his potential is higher than Hurd's. Just sayin.'

Wait - so Crayton will be the 6th receiver?

Crayton is an excellent slot receiver....but Richardson will challenge him for that spot. Crayton thus becomes a backup for TO/TG and can also back up Richardson in the slot....a utility kind of guy. Stanback and Austin are the guys we'll groom to challenge TO and TG next season. That's my story...and I'm stickin' to it. ;)
