After Ryan was fired the guys on the ticket said Jerry had asked ROb what he wanted his answer was I need two CBs . Hence the Carr signing and trade for Claiborne . They were both rob Ryan inputs . Jerry was so pissed with the end results hence the firing . He let him pick his own groceries and they were disasters . Jerry was pissed . You get a coach what he wants and results are even worse.
I am pretty certain it goes beyond that. There was a lot of talk from the coaches and scouts that questioned Ryan's way of doing things. He wasn't very good at managing personnel and would get into throwing together all these complex blitzes and stunts, but may miss a giant weakness in the scheme. There was a lot of griping about Ryan's forgetfulness or lack of understanding fundamental football. That's a big reason why we went towards Kiffin/Marinelli....it's all about the fundamentals and very little about complexity. Less trying to 'out-scheme' the opponent and more about 'out-playing' the opponent.
I think Ryan would be a very good D-Coordinator, but he's like Mike Martz...with the right head coach reigning him in....he could have some great defenses. Without that right HC, he becomes a joke of a coordinator.
